Before buying a chair, measure under your desk—not just the desktop height
I used to think desktop height was the number that mattered. Then I started noticing how many desks lose several inches underneath to drawers, support rails, thick tops, or cable trays.
If the armrests don’t clear the lowest point, the chair stays farther away. You can get the chair adjusted perfectly and still end up reaching for the keyboard all day.
Before buying a chair, I’d measure:
• Floor to the lowest obstruction under the desk
• Floor to the top of the armrests at their lowest useful position
• The gap between the seat and desk underside at typing height
• How far the chair can actually roll in before something hits
This is especially easy to miss with older desks or desks with drawers.
What’s stealing the most space under yours?
