More road tripping in the 1998 Suburban.

This is an update from an earlier post about the mad dash my old suburban made across part of Route 66 and the Southwest.

I deleted the EVO steering system and replaced the water pump before heading west from Missouri via Dallas Texas.

I got snookered into downtown Dallas on the second night for a concert before going to Santa Fe.

It was 108* in Texas and the temperature gauge never went over 1/2 way (who knows how accurate that stock gauge is, haha)

I only wish I had more time to go all the way to Santa Monica and see that ocean!

Should my saw be making confetti when it cuts?

I just sharpened my saw and it’s making confetti out of the wood.

Is this okay?

Did Bob Wright already start delivering improvements on Wendy’s Spicy Chicken?

I got the number-six combo today and the sandwich was really good. Better than anything I’ve gotten since they changed it earlier this year.

The combo was $9.19 with the dollar-off code.

The thing I haven't hear anyone mention about the Q2 print.

I was randomly thinking about the Q2 print, and I didn't listen to the CC yet, so maybe this was covered there.

I was surprised to see comps so much lower because, anecdotally, the store here seems as busy as ever.

Then it hit me, Wendy's was still selling breakfast at all locations last year. That explains why gross margin was better than expectations despite the drop in store comps.

When we start lapping comps that did not include breakfast, we're probably going to see comps beating year-over-year. (The product improvements will obviously help there too)

Incidentally the store here is still open for breakfast, so I'm lucky enough to still be able to get the potato wedges.

Rancher 450 cuts fast, but not if the bar is parallel to the log surface.

I had a tree company cut down a large silver maple that was close to the house. I wanted to save money by cutting and splitting the tree myself, so I just paid them to "get it on the ground" (This was a huge tree, 38" diameter at chest height)

Now, I think I've got sharpening the cutters down pretty well because the saw cuts fast. It will go through a 14" log in just a few seconds.

The problem, and I'm not certain it's a problem, is that you have to angle the bar 15-20° to the cutting surface so it's mostly cutting near the end of the bar. This means I'm moving the bar back-and-forth across the cut on larger pieces. If you hold the bar flat, the blade seems to skip along and the cutters don't "dig-in" or alternately, it seems to catch the wood grain and bog down.

I used a straight edge and the rakers were about .025 (twenty-five thousands) below the top plate of the cutters.

Am I doing something wrong or is this normal?

Road Tripping my 1998 Suburban.

I’m road tripping my 1998 Suburban and plan on doing a small write up on my experience with the Dorman EVO steering solenoid bypass kit.

I put a new steering box, EVO bypass, and water pump on this thing in a mad dash before leaving on a 1000+ mile road trip into the Southwest.

I’ve owned this for a few years and have been slowly fixing it up.

I’ve rebuilt the front suspension and steering, done plenty of body work, and have fixed most of the usual suspects for maintenance issues.

Knock on wood, the engine has been cool even in 105* Dallas heat.

What's more impressive performance, big sudden gains, or a long track record of beating the market?

I noticed something recently. When I see people posting about making hundreds of percentage point gains on the normal YOLO-subs, it really doesn't impress me or raise feelings of envy at all, but it probably would have when I was young.

If you get sudden gains, it was either based on luck or inside information.

I remember Howard Marks roughly stating that over a long period of time, the top performing investors were basically never in the top 5% for any given year. (This may not be the exact math, but that was the point)

I remember a long time ago that "swinging for the fences" always burned me, but prudent picks were usually boring, but performed way better over time.

Anyway, I sometimes wonder what other people's thoughts are when they see the 1000% YOLO gains. Is it envy, contempt, or totally meaningless to you?

Chain of Rocks Bridge and Cahokia

If you travel down Route 66, the 1927 Chain of Rocks bridge is not drivable, but you can walk across and it’s a must see stop in St. Louis.

Also, the Illinois side is close to the Cahokia Indian Mounds.

When I drove down the route a few years ago, I totally missed both of these. (The mounds obviously aren’t directly related to Route 66, but they were basically on the route)

Anyway, you might miss these if you’re just following a map.

The Missouri side has a nice park. The Illinois side has a one-way bridge you have to cross first. You have to wait for the green light to go. You’ll eventually reach a cul-de-sac where you park. I came from the Illinois side and it was slightly confusing, but not too hard to figure out.

You can’t beat the Big Bacon Classic.

So, I just got us here the Big Bacon Classic and a Spicy Chicken.

It’s was delicious.

The Big Bacon is definitely one of the best burgers in the game.

The Spicy Chicken continues to be a winner here too.

You can thank me for getting rich on Wendy's. I sold covered calls June 12th.

My sale of covered calls was just the spark Wendy's needed!

The Neon Sign Park in St. Robert

I thought I’d chime in for those that haven’t been down the route lately that the sign park in St. Robert, Missouri, is pretty sweet.

I’m close by, but I hadn’t been there until a few days ago.

It might not be on your Rte 66 guide if you have a printed one.

Anyway, now you know. haha

Chicken Sandwiches

These are every picture of chicken sandwiches I’ve gotten at the Lebanon, MO, Wendy’s since they updated them in March.

It’s laughable how many people/bots come here to shitpost/shill about the new chicken.

Don’t believe the haters astroturfing, and I’ll see you all when WEN stock hits $10

Check the merch booth

I don’t know if all of the tour dates had these, but when I was at the show in Columbia, Missouri, I was able to pick up this autographed poster.

I finally got this put in a frame to hang up.

Anyway, I thought I’d tip off my fellow Redditors.

At what price would you want to see a stock split?

I'm curious on what other people's take is on the issue of a stock split. I don't think the current range makes sense, but let's say the stock goes over $500?

A lot of brokers allow you to buy fractional shares now, so maybe it doesn't matter at all, but still, there seems to be positive association with companies when they have a stock split.

It may be really premature to be asking the question, but I really think it's possible we could see RDDT go over $500 within the next couple of years.

I just let Tire Rack know that REDDIT was where I heard about buying from them.

I'm just letting you guys in on this hot tip before Wall Street knows.

I just bought a set of tires for my girlfriend's car on Tire Rack, and on the customer survey after the purchase, Reddit was one of the options to select, and of course I let them know that Reddit is where I heard about them.

You can thank me later when this is at $300.

Focal Point clock

I thought I’d see what you guys thought of this.

It’s a Howard Miller “Focal Point” clock.

I lurked for one of these for several years and ended up buying it and taking a long drive to pick it up in Atlanta.

I had the movement replaced by Victor Morizov in St. Louis about a year ago.

Promo Copy of Still Life (Talking)

So, I recently discovered PMG’s music, and I’ve been blown away by their discography.

I bought a copy of Still Life (Talking) off of discogs, and noticed that it was a promo copy.

Anyway, it’s an amazing album, and probably one of the first pressings. I thought it was worth sharing here.
