A little preview of what I’ve been working on alongside Magnetar Mobile…

My Magnetar is a self-hosted companion for the Magnetar ecosystem that lets you run your own private instance on your own hardware.

The aim isn’t to replace Magnetar Mobile, but to give those of us with home servers a proper browser-based experience that feels familiar, while keeping everything under our own control.

It’s still very much a work in progress, but it’s reached the point where I thought it was worth sharing a sneak peek.

A lot of people use Stremio with Real-Debrid, TorBox, AllDebrid or another debrid service.

What people sometimes forget is that your debrid account is not just a background service for Stremio. It also keeps a list of what you have added, watched or downloaded.

Magnetar and Magnetar Mobile are built around that idea.

Instead of leaving everything as one long messy debrid list, Magnetar Sync lets you organise those items into your own folders.

-Movies.

-Series.

-Audiobooks.

-Images.

-Private or adult collections.

-Whatever makes sense to you.

The files are not stored on your phone or computer by Magnetar. TorBox/Real-Debrid etc still handles the files. Magnetar just references and organises them, then lets you browse, open, play or manage them from your Android device.

That is where Magnetar Sync comes in.

You can use the browser extension on desktop, organise items into folders, then have those folders available in Magnetar Mobile on Android.

You can also send magnet links or torrent hashes from torrent websites into your debrid service through Magnetar, then review, save and organise them on your phone.

So if you already use Real-Debrid, TorBox, AllDebrid or Premiumize, Magnetar gives you another way to use the storage and history that your account already has that Stremio uses.

It is not trying to replace Stremio.

It is for organising, reviewing, saving and browsing your own debrid library outside of Stremio.

You already pay for the debrid service, why not make the most of it.

Provider files are not moved or changed.

Provider API keys stay local.

Magnetar Sync only keeps Magnetar things in step, like saved items, sent history and organised folders.

Magnetar 2.2 and Magnetar Mobile 1.2 are now live.

This is the biggest Magnetar update so far. The browser extension and Android app now work together through Magnetar Sync, with support for saved items, sent history, mobile review items and organised folders.

The main additions are:

• Magnetar Sync - Pair the extension and Android app with a private QR code and keep supported Magnetar data in step across devices.
• Send to mobile - Send single items or batches from the extension to the Magnetar Mobile Review queue.
• Organised folders - Create Magnetar folders with synced names, colours and contents. These are Magnetar folders only. Provider files and folders are never moved, renamed or changed.
• TorBox Airlock Supported - TorBox items can now be Airlocked directly from Magnetar. Airlock is TorBox state, so TorBox remains the source of truth.
• Updated toolbar and folder UI - The extension now has clearer sync/mobile actions, better folder layouts, provider-aware organised items
• A new What’s New panel for the 2.2 features.

Privacy remains local-first: Provider API keys and client passwords stay local.

Synced Magnetar data is encrypted before it reaches the sync server and provider files are not uploaded to Magnetar Sync.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the closed testing phase and helped shape the app. This is only the beginning, and I’ve got plenty more planned for both Magnetar and Magnetar Mobile.

The update is available now on Firefox, GitHub, and Chrome.

MAGNETAR DOWNLOAD

This is a pretty chunky update, even though a lot of it looks like polish at first glance.

New bits include:

• Client view in the toolbar
• Browse supported provider/client items without leaving the page
• Open in provider actions and downloads where supported
• Cleaner toolbar layout
• Faster Magnetar Shield popup blocking
• Optional recommended nuisance popup list in settings
• Better ext.to detail-page detection
• Magnetar Mobile shortcut in the toolbar
• AllDebrid handled more honestly with Open in AllDebrid actions

The Shield changes are probably my favourite part. It feels noticeably quicker at killing nasty popup/redirect tabs, and the new optional recommended list means it can improve without needing a full extension update every time another garbage popup domain appears.

Grab it now.

Been working on the next Magnetar extension update (available soon), and one of the smaller useful bits is an optional recommended popup list.

Basically, it’ll live in Settings and let you can import a JSON of known nuisance popup/ad-trap domains. The idea is to help block those nippy random redirect tabs without turning Magnetar into a full adblocker or breaking normal browsing.

A few important bits:

It’s optional.
It’s just a plain domain list, not remote code.
It only targets top-level popup/redirect tabs.
It doesn’t block normal page scripts, images, captchas or site resources.
You can remove it again whenever you want.

This came from testing on some sites where new disposable popup domains kept appearing faster than a normal built-in blocklist could keep up. So now Shield can improve without needing a full extension update every time.

Still testing it, but it already feels like a big quality-of-life improvement.

I have some new features being added to the new update, should be finished next week including vastly improved Magnetar Shield to help with the annoying popup tabs.

The Add page, Client page and Settings page have all had a lot of attention recently, with a big focus on organisation, library management and overall usability.

It's starting to feel more like the extension with much more included.

Chrome finally accepted my extension after an extensive rebuild.

Gives protection to family members when surfing, from keeping kids safely away from explicit sites to stopping distracting scrolling and also ensuring those less savvy online dont click on malware or phishing sites.
