27th anniversary if the Chi-Chi (921) earthquake in Taiwan

It was 1:47 of the 21st of September 1999, when a Mw7.7 earthquake at the Chelungpu Fault struck the town of Chi-Chi (or Jiji), in Nantou county, central Taiwan.

https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/usp0009eq0/

The devastation was huge and so were the human losses:

2400 people killed, 8700 injured and 600,000 homeless.

Dams and bridges were destroyed and landslides created new lakes.

https://doi.org/10.1785/0120000738

It was also felt in Mainland China, including Hong-Kong, and in the Japanese Ryukyu islands.

Anniversary of a magnitude 8 earthquake in Yunnan in Mainland China, in 1833

It was the 6th of September 1833, when a Mw8.0 earthquake ruptured a large segment of the Xiaojian Fault, in the Songming Fault, not far from Kunming, the capital of the southern Chinese province of Yunnan.

https://doi.org/10.1016/j.pepi.2008.04.013

https://doi.org/10.1016/j.pepi.2008.04.013

Due to the tremendous violence of the earthquake, the authorities estimated that more than 80,000 buildings were destroyed and 6,707 people were killed in the affected areas, in great part in consequence of the huge landslides.

https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k54370177

Analysing the known history of earthquakes along that fault, the 1833 event is incomparably greater than any other seismic convulsions in the last five centuries.

https://doi.org/10.1016/j.pepi.2008.04.013

That poses the question, not yet answered: when there will be a similar earthquake there?

The largest earthquake in New York happened 82 years ago

It was 39 minutes past midnight of September 5, 1944, when a Mw5.7 earthquake, the largest known so far in the New York state, hit Massena, a town very close to the border with Canada and the St. Lawrence river.

https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/iscgem899531/

Apart from much panic, the earthquake caused significant damage in Massena and in the neighbouring town of Cornwall, in Ontario, Canada.

It was felt through a very large geographical area, which comprised in the US all New England and great part of Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Maryland.

Anniversary of the great earthquake that destroyed Tokyo and Yokohama in 1923

It was around midday, on the 1st of September 1923, when a Mw8.0 earthquake (followed by strong aftershocks in the next minutes), originated at the Sagami Trench struck the Kanto plain, in central Honshu, Japan.

https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/iscgem911526/

Although many residents were crushed by falling buildings and debris, wildfires created veritable firestorms that accounted for almost 90% of the casualities.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Kant%C5%8D_Earthquake

Tokyo and Yokohama were among the most severely hit cities. Half of the first city and nearly the entire second were destroyed, leaving 2,500,000 people homeless.

The advertiser-journal. volume AUBURN NY September 01, 1923, Page 1

The Republican-journal OGDENSBURG NY September 04, 1923, Page 1

The death toll was colossal - estimates vary from 105,000 to 140,000. Besides its human and economical heavy impact, the Kanto earthquake had also political implications. In the aftermath of quake, groups of vigilantes - with the complicity of several police officers and government officials - killed thousands of Koreans, along with anarchists, socialists, and communists. Some even say that isolation of Japan was another consequence, paving the way to the invasion of China and later Pearl Harbour.

Tokyo was also destroyed by similar earthquakes in 1703 and 1855.

On the 31st August 2025, a Mw6.0 earthquake hit the province of Kunar, in northeastern Afghanistan, not far from the border with Pakistan.

Heavy rains in the previous days facilitated the occurrences of landslides.

Strong aftershocks in the following days added destruction and victims.

MANILA STANDARD 3 September 2025

The effects of recent war and the Taliban censorship and restrictions about female medical staff worsened the situation, namely among the women.

Although numbers might be even higher, the official estimates point to about 2,200 deaths and almost other 4,000 people injured.

Tsunami waves of a giant Chilean earthquake reached Japan in 29 August 1420

On the 29th of August 1420 (September 7, according to the Gregorian calendar) a tsunami hit the coast of Honshu, Japan, but no earthquake was reported. That was what they call an "orphan tsunami"

https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1520290882585459200

https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1520290882585459200

The mystery seems to have been solved with the recent discovery of a field of large boulders in the coast of the desert of Atacama in northern Chile.

https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1520290882585459200

https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1520290882585459200

https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1520290882585459200

The dating of the boulders (between 1408 and 1449 AD) and the size of the causing earthquakes (magnitude between 8.8 and 9.4) match quite well with the tsunami that reached the Japanese coast in 1420.

By the way, it wouldn't be the first nor the last time that a giant earthquake with epicenter close to the South American coasts produced a tsunami that affected the Japanese coasts.

Weeks of aftershocks followed the event.

By a curious coincidence, on another 26th of August, but in 1966, a relatively large (M4.7) earthquake located not very far from this one, but inland, was felt throughout the center and the south of Portugal.

https://www.casadasciencias.org/recurso/7321
