Does your world have creatures or beings with true forms that are incomprehensible?

These beings don't have to be divine/godly. It can be anything. Though if you have gods and demons that are like that, I will still accept it.

My Turn:

The Saints are these beings. In order to take on a form that is easy to handle without dying or being driven insane, they have incarnations or avatars as ordinary people who resemble the lesser races. The Saints are gods with true forms that are very incomprehensible. So, they use their incarnations to engage with the lesser races.

The Mechanical Drought is a tricky one because its true form is an eldritch machine in the form of an enormous beast. Some people laid their eyes on it and were driven mad. Though the soul of the Mechanical Drought lies in the body of a young woman.

The Ravakalyn are even more tricky as their true forms aren't incomprehensible, but it is scary looking. What makes their forms incomprehensible is mainly their aura. The Ravakalyn have eldritch aura when they are in their true form. And when they speak, it unleashes a sense of both dread and madness within the unfortunate victim.

The Pillars that fell onto the world are trickier than the Ravakalyn. The longer you stare at the pillars, the more mad you become because there is a countdown that is barely visible on each pillar. The countdown is the same, but the reason behind the countdown is currently unknown. It can lead to an event that could devastate the world. The true form of the pillars aren't incomprehensible, but the meaning behind the countdown is.

Tome of Eldritch lore? Do you have your own version of the Necronomicon in your world?

Does anyone have a book that holds evil and dark knowledge? A knowledge so bad that knowing it could drive a person mad with insanity.

Do you have any grimoires or tomes like that in your world?

My Turn:

I have something like that, but there isn't a name for it yet. This tome has all the information on the Saints (gods in my world) along with the secrets regarding the highest ranked Saint. Learning this information could shatter a person's worldview and harm them fatally. Also, there is a dangerous spell that has the ability to transform a person into a Saint, though the process is a highly deadly one. This tome also holds all the secrets and info revolving what the Saints did before creating the lesser races.

There is another book that has the ability to resurrect the dead eldritch giant called the Mechanical Drought or rather on how to create your very own Mechanical Drought.

A minor version of this would be an illegal book holding all the information about KUA. Though the KUA is a source of good, they have done some seriously shady shit to get to where they are now. If that information got out, that could cause major problems.

I wanted to share my magic system a little!

In my world, the air is called aether. Aether is magic, Aether is life.

Magic is called misting and it comes from aether. Every single living being has veins that allow them the ability to use misting as they breathe in the aether. Misting comes out of the fingertips as a mist that takes on different colors based on the race and species.

Although everyone can use misting, they aren't created equal.

Depending on your mist levels, you can use various spells. Everyone can use spells, but there are only some races that can use more spells than the other. Along with the ability to handle aether dwellings, which are locations thick or thin with aether.

Races with irregular mist levels can reside in high and middle aether dwellings. That means they can live in locations where the aether is akin to climbing the tallest mountain or where the aether is neutral.

Aether dwellings come in low, middle, high, or toxic.

Mist levels come in regular, irregular, unbalance, and abnormal.

That is my magic system. If you have questions, you are free to ask and I shall do my very best to answer you.

Writers writing about writers?

Have you ever written a story about a fictional character who is or wanted to be a writer? Or are you in the process of writing a book like that?

My Turn:

I never finished the story, but I was at one point working one where a niece was trying to finish her aunt's story in order to understand her aunt as a person. The niece is not a writer, but she wanted to complete her aunt's story. Will I ever go back to this book to complete it? Maybe, just maybe.

What about you? Ever written about a fictional writer or soon to be fictional writer?

Have you written a character moment where the character helplessly started to cry over a situation?

Have you ever written a character moment in your story, where any of your characters became so helpless in the midst of a certain situation, that not only left them speechless, but also in hysterical tears?

This character had no words to express how helpless they felt, but the tears did it for them. This character cries at their failure to help and to be strong and despise their weaknesses, that when they were able to face the situation, it sinks into that characters’ mind how truly helpless they are.

This situation can be anything and this character can be anyone, not just the MC. The goal is to focus on the character who cried after realizing their weakness and their inability to handle the situation and their total failures.

What moment in your story has a character dealing with this? What is the cause of the situation? Did any other character give support to that character? How will your character handle the situation, now that they are possibly a bit more accepting towards their weaknesses and wants to get stronger?

How does your character define what is considered strength and what is considered weak? Has that moment made them a stronger in terms of their character or are they still growing and learning from the situation?

If you have a character that isn’t the type that cries and breaks down emotionally, how did they express their feeling in the face of feeling helpless and weak?

Am I crazy or is this book a little bit slow?

I'm reading Joe Abercrombie's first book in The First Law Trilogy, and I'm on chapter 14. Things are interesting, but the story feels slow. I'm talking about the pacing of it. I can't explain it, but things are happening and not happening at the same time. I was wondering if I was a bad reader for feeling this way, yet it just feels slow.

Has anyone who read this book felt this way? When does the story pick up? Am I crazy for thinking that?

Does anyone have any underground cities or towns or even nations in their world?

My Turn:

I have underground nations rather than a city or a town. It's lawless down there and a place for people to commit crimes easily. Most people don't go there because of that reason.

What about you? Do you have underground nations, cities, or towns in your world? Tell me all about them. They don't have to be similar to my own, just something you have.

Is this weird? Because I find it weird and unlike me!

All I want to do is read. I'm currently going back and forth between four books that I'm reading.

This is very much unlike me. I STRUGGLE with reading books because of my AuDHD and aphantasia. But for some reason, I am doing alright with reading e-books. Because I am doing alright with e-books, I just want to take time away from writing to read. I know, I know writers have to write in order to get better. Yet they also need to read too.

I might be jumping the gun, but it's so strange for me to feel this way. I am still getting through the four books, but I'm doing it in a way where the old me couldn't. I still worry a bit that old habits will strike fast, yet I am still trying to be consistent.

I'm not on any writing deadlines or anything. I have all the time in the world. I just want to read as much as I can and see where it takes me.

I haven't tried e-books because I was afraid of the same turn out as reading a physical copy of the book. But something is starting to click with e-books in a way that reading the physical book has not.

I want to jump for joy over this, just rather not get too excited yet until I am sure I can finish these books. I am retaining things a bit when I read, but I'm mostly analyzing the writing style.

So, writing is going to have to wait for a while until I am fully well read.

What do you think about this change?

Looking for fantasy books with deep worldbuilding and lore along with engaging characters in a complex story.

I've been getting back into reading and I'm currently reading three different fantasy novels.

Here is what I am looking for in my fantasy or even science-fiction books:

  1. Deep lore with heavy worldbuilding.

  2. Characters that are both interesting and engaging.

  3. Complex plots and stories that force you to think/ponder.

4(bonus). Cool and unique magic systems.

I shall be searching for these books on my Hoopla and Libby apps because I prefer to use my library to read these books.

Does anyone know of any fantasy or science-fiction books that fit these criteria?

My story is so horribly written that rereading it is hurting me!

NOTE: I'm not posting my story on here because it is very rough. You're just gonna have to believe me when I say that it is horrible.

I'm on chapter one, but rereading this is driving me crazy. There are so many problems that I desperately need to address:

  1. I'm telling way too much and showing much less.

  2. I have redundant sentences and phrasing.

  3. The dialogue is choppy and lacking.

  4. There's nonsense that is added/things that don't need to be there.

  5. Repeating things that are unnecessary.

  6. The characters are so boring and lacking interesting aspects.

  7. The pacing is off.

  8. The prose is just so clunky.

  9. I add things that I forget about later.

  10. It's boring, and nothing is happening in the early pages.

And mind you, this is just chapter one. I'm afraid to read the other pages because of how bad it is. I wanted to reread it so I could do an outline. If I'm being honest with myself, I need to read some books. Because this shit is terrible, my writing is trash.

Damn, I knew that my writing was sucky, yet I kept putting it off because I stopped myself from getting better. I don't want to start an outline just yet. I just want to discipline myself to read more books from beginning to end. I NEED to read some fiction novels in my preferred genre and other genres.

I'm annoyed at myself, and I should be.

Anyway, I need to see if reading e-books can save me in a way that reading physical books cannot. I still struggle when it comes to reading fiction, but damnit, if this rereading my own book wasn't an eye opener for me.

I just felt like sharing this because I am pissed and need to do something about it.

Can anyone somewhat relate or used to relate?

NOTE: THIS IS DRAFT 6, NOT THE FIRST DRAFT!!!

I used to be this crazy when it comes to worldbuilding! Thank goodness that has changed!

I found some notes for worldbuilding where I wrote that I have 648 countries. Now mind you I do not have a list of the names for each 648 country. This was just something I wanted to do because I'm insane. There was no way I was fleshing out 648 countries just for the hell of it. That is way too much.

So, I have much less than that, but still quite a lot. And I have not fleshed out any of those countries yet.

What about you? Have you ever looked at your old worldbuilding notes thinking that you're crazy for adding that? Did you go through with it or did you get rid of it?

What are you trying to say with your story? Are you saying anything at all?

What truly inspired your story? What message or social commentary are you building in your story? Is there something you want to say with your stories?

So, is your story just vibes or is it more with some vibes?

My turn:

My current story is basically just entertainment. However, I do have other stories that I have not written yet, that have a message without me trying to state it. My current story could change to having a message, but for now I am not trying to say anything mainly due to the inspiration of the story. What I plan to do with this story? Hell, if I know for now.

What about you? Let me know if this thread makes sense to you.

I believe I figured out something pertaining to my story! Time for a total redo!

So, I am on draft six of my current novel, and I realized something important.
That realization made me understand that I will have to redo the whole entirety of the sixth draft. Because I came up with a plot/idea that I've been wanting to try since I started this novel. Back then I could not figure it out, but now, I believe I grasp what I want the story to be about. I've been doing rewrites mainly to figure out what I want to do with the story. Now, I know what I want the story to be about properly. I have the inspiration really showcased in the story like I wanted it to. Moving on, I just believe that the draft that I have will not help me because I changed the plot and removed something that I no longer need.

Time to do my last and final rewrite!

What do you think? Have you ever experienced something similar with your writing?

I've found my old drafts to my story and I want to pick things apart!

I am currently on my sixth draft of my story, chapter fourteen. However, I found my old drafts and wanted to jot down notes from the draft for when I get to draft seven. My drafts are just me rewriting the story and adding things from memory. Now, that I have the old drafts, I want to make a list of things that I need to change or remove or wonder why I didn't focus on that for draft seven. I can still work on draft 6 and still do this note-taking. However, I have to take down notes for draft 6 as well at some point when I am done.

I know I could probably wait till I'm done with draft 6 to do this, but I am too anxious.

It's not editing or revising, just rereading and taking down notes.

What do you think? Do you think I am wasting my time or it really doesn't matter what I do?

What does schooling look like in your world?

In your world, do you have magical schools and regular schools separate from each other or do you combine them into one school? How do you handle schools in your world? What age does school start for certain races and the same applies for graduating school? What level of schooling does your world have? Tell me more in great detail.

My Turn:

I don't see these combinations often or at all. However I decided to create schools where you can learn magic and academics. So, in one class you learn how to read ancient text in a tome in order to do magical spells. In the next class you learn how to do algebra or learn about the history of your country or world. So, there are magic based classes and academic based classes. This is common in every country on my planet.

Bonus Question: Pick a country from your world. What is the education system like in that country?

Does anyone have prehistoric time in their world?

I understand that for most world building it has ancient times more so than prehistoric, but I'm curious to know if there was a prehistory before the ancient times. OR are your prehistoric times actually the ancient times of your world?

My Turn:

Prehistoric times would be when my gods dwell on my planet first. The ancient times would be when the lesser races came into existence and built their civilization, eons later.

What about you? Did your world have prehistoric time?
