Underappreciated real-world cultures/eras for inspo?

In particular, I'm realizing that my world history book overviewed China, Japan, and India and said pretty much nothing about Korea. Then I went on Pinterest looking at a hanbok chart and realized, "Hey, I haven't seen much of this in Western media."

It's not just Asian or African countries either. We have so much medieval fantasy but not as much Renaissance or baroque fantasy.

So what do you think are some underrated eras and cultures you'd like to see more of in fiction? Fantasy or otherwise.

USB mic or XLR mic?

So I'd like a mic for song vocals, Foley, podcasts, voice acting. Shure SM58 looks good because of its reputation for "being built like a tank". Also because I don't have sound treatment and probably shouldn't use a condenser mic. But should I get the XLR version and an audio interface (Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 is on my list), or should I get the USB version? Or perhaps XLR mic with a separate USB adapter?

Traditional pencil/pen tips vs digital stylus tips: Which do you prefer?

In particular, I wanted to know how the thickness differences of said tips feel.

People who tried trad, then digital: did you find the Apple Pencil too thick compared to, say, a mechanical pencil or a fineliner? Too thick compared to a charcoal pencil? Or did you think about tips differently, possibly because of zooming/brush size adjustment? Did the pencil block your view when you drew?

People who tried digital, then trad: did you find it strange adjusting to so many types of drawing input when digital allows you to use just one?

I have your classic wooden pencils, but I prefer the thinner tip of a .7 mm mechanical pencil and plan to get .5 and .3 pencils. I find a graphics tablet stylus tip to be much thicker than a mechanical pencil, but due to hand-eye disconnect it doesn't feel equivalent.

Where to share comic making process? (No AI training)

What the title says. I want to make comics and find I'm more motivated when I can keep someone updated. Reddit is good for discovery but not for a following, and more importantly, it's a prime source for training AIs on human material. And while I'm just one speck in a massive ocean, I'd rather not see an AI mimicking me someday. So where do I share things so that people can see them?

Pixel Art or Hand-Drawn Art for Original Music?

So I wasn't sure where to post this and got lost while trying to read subreddit rules, but... I recently started a YouTube. I intend to post original songs there with accompanying art. For my next song, I was wondering if I should learn pixel art or do hand-drawn.

Currently I have only one song on the channel, accompanied by Bandlab footage. Not very eye-catching. In Bandlab, I have a static picture of random colors, which is okay I suppose...

Also I will probably change my avatar sometime because I like the concept but not really the execution, and the sooner I can associate the channel with one of my actual OCs, the better.

What do you like to listen to while writing?

Pop? Rock? Jazz? Instrumental? Rain ambience? Television without watching the visuals? ASMR water pouring noises? Podcasts/audiobooks you probably aren't actually learning from, unless you've stopped writing?

Or perhaps silence?

I personally like to compose custom soundtracks without lyrics. Though classical is sometimes acceptable for outlining, and pop /rock is good for work.

More digital painting (by me)

So. I, er, abandoned that painting I was last working on. Partly because that second hand was in the wrong place. Partly because the face didn't look right. Partly because I hated the background color and the pants and the boots and the top was muddy. It's on the third slide if anyone wants to see it.

Anyway, I (sort of) finished a different digital painting and now, I want to know if the first or second version looks better. Second one has the sky color on a sort of transparent "Color" blending layer.

I have a bad habit of trying to finish digital paintings all in one go. Or maybe a good habit because quicker feedback loops? Hard to say. This character is tentatively named Poppy--maybe I'll put that in the final picture.

How to write novels/novellas as someone who prefers visual media?

Fact 1: I love comics and animation. Fact 2: I like writing advice. Fact 3: Most writing advice is for *novels*. I want to take questionnaires, finish writing projects, get feedback on my work, but questionnaires, for instance, assume I'm writing a novel or maybe novella. How do I write better for novels? (More importantly, how do I *like* writing for novels? I'm not good at setting description--I only mention it when it feels extremely relevant, which means I probably miss out on opportunities to talk about it during the scene. I don't know how to sustain a single storyline over 80,000 words.)

How do y'all name music with no lyrics?

Exactly what the title says. Tips, stories, casual discussion? Anything goes. How do you like to name your songs when there are no lyrics?

I named my first public song, Neon Purple, after the vibe pretty much. The key sig sounds like purple to me. Find it here: https://youtu.be/daM4dcEzj3o

My first published song, Neon Purple!

Find the full track here: https://www.bandlab.com/track/b6ba4a9a-22b5-4599-8386-a419db60a082?revId=9cb976d9-e4a1-42c4-bd86-11d566eaeaff

Find the video in Bandlab here: https://www.bandlab.com/post/af9520bfdaf0435999f371f1d50402d4_b6ba4a9a22b545998386a419db60a082

And if either link is broken, let me know (I tried testing them and got mixed results).

So far, I think free Bandlab is okay. Limited, definitely. But more fun than a generic voice recorder.

Give this bald head some hair

Copy the head, draw some hair, and post. Simple. That includes facial hair (eyebrows, eyelashes, beard, mustache) and head hair. How much and what kind of each is up to you. Enjoy!

P.S. I forgot to tag the thing. Sorry

iPad Air for art: any regrets?

Some years back, I thought the only way to get a serious iPad for Procreate was to shell out $1000+ for an iPad Pro and Pencil. Now that the iPad Air has an M4 chip, Apple Pencil Pro, and a 13" version, the Air is looking like an amazing portable sketchbook and art station. I could essentially create posters and entire comics on the iPad, with Procreate and a formatting app. I could even use an audio interface, electric guitar, and Garageband to sketch music on it until I get a custom desktop. I'm ready to upgrade from my Huion Inspiroy and old computer. I predict that minimizing lag, coil whine, display issues, and setup time will help me produce more (not necessarily better) art. It's the difference between using a boogie board and using a Pentel mechanical pencil. My drawing skills translate, but pencil lets me erase, use more values, create texture.

Which brings me to important questions: Does anyone here regret buying the iPad Air over the new iPad Pro? Or even over the old M2 iPad Pro? Anyone who thinks that the base iPad is better for the value, even for committed artists? Anyone who thinks that the extra screen space (A4 instead of A5) isn't worth the $200 difference? Or perhaps, that Procreate and the Pencil isn't worth the iPad instead of an Android tablet?
