Is Mountain West Near Insolvency?

Asking this question on Google gets lots of references to the supposed $70 million settlement of their lawsuits with the Pac 12 and former teams. But it doesn't go any deeper than that. Asking about current MW accounts payable produces nothing. But there are a number of factors which indicate that MW is in very poor financial condition:

-They are obligated to pay $61 million expeditiously to satisfy contractual distributions to the teams they retained. This must be paid before anything else.

-They owe $18 million for the cost of getting new members.

-They owe legal fees for their Pac 12 lawsuits.

-They have already been paid $47 million by the departing schools, by retaining their 2025 and 2026 conference shares. They were overzealous about this and owe $2 million back to the five departing schools:

"Following the MW bylaws, the conference withheld annual distributions from its five departing schools for the 2025 and 2026 fiscal years. Those were roughly $6 million payments. So, the MW would owe those schools a $2 million re-payment after withholding a total of $12 million."

It appears that MW only has about $25 million left that they can collect from the Pac. Their net asset valuation is about $50 million, and almost all of this is withheld distributions from the departing schools.

Even with another infusion of $25 million from the Pac for poaching, MW's obligations exceed their total assets by at least $20 million. Since they are a non-profit the easiest course is to collect the missing money from the member schools....or reduce their distributions from the lawsuit settlements.

Murray's final summary of the MW's legal maneuvering:

"Bottom line — this settlement should create some new revenue for Nevada and other MW schools. But it's clearly not program-changing cash for the non-UNLV/Air Force schools that remained in the MW."

Soooo how do we make these cuts?

I don’t see any recourse but to increase the income tax. On everyone. Right now. In an election year.

Unique Resort Amenities

Part of the attraction of the timeshares we use are the unique amenities each resort provides. We’re at one now that has steam showers, providing us with our own in-room hammam. The one at Sunriver provides free bikes for riding miles along the Deschutes. In Palm Springs we get unlimited free kumquats from the big trees on the grounds. At Newport there is a Dungeness crab fishing dock and cooker.

All the resorts provide basics like grills, pools and clubhouses. But many of them have these unique features.

Best Oregon Open Mics

I like M&J Tavern in Bend and Gratitude Brewing in Eugene these days. Every town has a good one but I haven’t been to every town.

They come and go. Sadly Dexter Lake Club is gone.

Not The Best Way To Treat Your Teeth

A lot of my dental troubles have been blamed on drinking soft water when I was a kid. But things were made worse by eating sweet things. Especially sweet sticky gooey things...

Skittles. Starburst. Caramels. Taffy. Decades of pushing and pulling my teeth took its toll. Fillings, crowns, root canals, extractions, bridges and finally implants.

About a year ago I hit rock bottom. I bit into a Mento which attached itself to an upper molar and pulled it apart into little bits. I knew something was wrong as I tried to continue eating the Mento and could not, because of all the embedded tooth debris. That molar had affected the adjacent molars, which in turn were extracted. Now all the left upper molars are gone. They'll get implants in the next few months and I'll be patched back together again.

If it wasn't for all that gooey stuff my teeth would undoubtedly be in better condition. But on the bright side I have provided a livelihood to many dentists....

Big 10 Strikes Out

It’s refreshing to see all their ex Pac teams fall in the supers. I’m still miffed that the NCAA jobbed the Beavers out of the Regional they earned. All so they could load another Big 10 team in. Doctor Pepper, Uncle Phil and Wild Wings had their say.

Sorry Big 10. No Omaha this year.

Go Mountaineers!

Salad Dressing As Gravy

Good salad dressing goes on blowout sales a lot around here. I buy it faster than I eat salads and it sits around. Recently I discovered that it tastes good on almost any food. The tangy vinegar base and the flavoring complement anything.

Right now I’m working on Annie’s Caesar. I haven’t eaten a Caesar Salad in two years. But that dressing has gone on sweet potatoes, roasted cauliflower, pork chops, fried onion rings and Rice a Roni.

Turquoise Bolo Slides For Wear With Pendleton Shirts

The original post didn’t allow photos. I wear these mostly with the old gabardine shirts.

Making Bolo Ties

Since last summer I’ve been getting back into bolos. They wear well with Pendleton shirts. Especially with the plain gabardine.

I’ve picked up a couple with turquoise settings. Recently I’ve found that there is a huge supply of turquoise cabs available over a range of prices. The stones are spectacular compared to the ones in my bolos, and far less expensive.

Rocky Mountain Western sells bolo-making supplies. So far I’ve made four slides using turquoise cabs epoxied to disc bases. The next test is bond durability over months of wearing.

Anyone else making their own bolos?

Will Elsa or Anna ever have children?

Real queens like Elizabeth II and Victoria had families. Elsa and Anna were born into a family. But does the royal line end with them, like it did with Queen Anne and Elizabeth I?

Frozen was released 13 years ago. There has been no perceptible progress towards a family, just more adventures. Elsa and Anna are frozen in time, never growing up.

Bubbies Spicy Flappies Go On Sale

Normally I like crunching a whole dill pickle, but flappies have their uses. When I saw the 25 oz Spiced Kosher Dill Pickle Slices go on sale for $2.49 I had to give them a try. Excellent sandwich pickle because of the spice and the jar is jammed full of them.

Back for a couple more jars this afternoon.

Sadly AI does not like words like "crunch" and "flappy". It takes some time to correct its mistakes.

Under The Big Ponderosas

Snowplants. They‘re parasites on the pine root fungus. It’s the first time I’ve seen them, at 6500 ft elevation in Nevada.

I thought they were orchids.

Current Rare Coin Availability

Over the past six months I’ve been finding coins that I’ve wanted for years. Not high grades, which are superabundant, but decent circulated hole fillers. The latest was an 1884CC half eagle in F15. It's in an IGC holder, but so what. When will I see another one?

Has anyone else noticed this for what they collect?
