Being financially responsible sucks

Not to be dramatic, but I feel like I left a piece of my SOUL behind today with this IMG Motley baby. I had to physically give all my payment methods to my friend so that I wouldn’t buy him. 🫠

(…I got their business card. I might still buy him lol)

Day One…

I’m doing it guys. 42 years old and I am FINALLY doing it after talking about it for almost a year because I don’t even remember who I am anymore so here goes nothin. 😭

Just placed the patch an hour ago. How long does it usually take for estrogen to start entering your system? I’m a vet tech and when we place Fentanyl patches it takes about 24 hours for them to really be effective so I’m just curious.

Professional Essssssplorer

I’ve had this guy in a 40g Quarantine tank for the past 6 weeks and finally moved him into his 4x2 today. He had stayed in his log hide for basically his entire time in QT. Today he IMMEDIATELY out covering the whole new enclosure. I really have trouble believing people who say that their snakes “prefer” living in racks.

Please PLEASE make specific, easy to find plans for your pets if you pass away

I’ve worked and volunteered with shelters/animal control for almost 15 years. I don’t care if you are 23 or 93, I am begging everyone to try to have a plan in place if you pass away. People die unexpectedly every single day - car accidents, dropping dead, speed run to the ER. While you are healthy and coherent, everyone should make some sort of plan for their pets. Dogs, cats, horses, reptiles, frogs, fish. All your pets.

ESPECIALLY IF THEY HAVE MEDICAL OR BEHAVIORAL ISSUES. The amount of animals that come into the shelter because the owner passed away suddenly and “no one in the family can take them” is soul crushing. Talk with your friends, talk with your family. Make animals who have behavioral or medical issues a priority in terms of finding a backup plan. Healthy friendly animals will have a stressful enough time going into the system but will have a much better chance of getting pulled by a smaller rescue or being adopted.

WRITE IT DOWN. Write a list somewhere where people can easily find it. Put it on the fridge, pin it to your wall, put it in your legal documents. Write all the info about your pet, what they like and don’t like, what they are Bad with, what special needs they might have. Write the names and contact numbers of people you have talked to that said they can take those animals on. No animal is perfect but having that baseline saves a lot of resources in terms of finding them a soft landing if they need a rehome.

Sorry, this is all stemming from some guy who died (dropped dead at 33) and when we talked to the family about his 4 dogs (3 of which have behavioral issues or are difficult breeds to adopt) they could only say “oh, he has friends who love those dogs…”. But they have no specifics and no contact info and now the dogs are sitting terrified and freaking out in a county shelter and they don’t necessarily have to be there. 😔

Obsssssssessed with my Dumerils baby

He is my 14th snake and I just cannot get over how much I love him 💕 He will just hang out and chill like this while I’m reading. I never thought I could like a snake more than my BCIs but here we are…

Epona (Legend of Zelda) by Cassandra at Iron and Pine Tattoo Co - Metuchen, NJ

This is one that I WISH I had gotten on a more visible part of my body so I could show it off more often ❤️

Remember me fondly…

For I am surely about to perish in the jaws of this ferocious beast 👹

She did, in fact, let go…only to go at me again like 10 seconds later.

Educate Me

Someone please educate me on genetics please. Sterling Jungle Hey VPI. I love this snake and how it looks BUT I know that colors change as they age.

My anery went from grey as a baby to tan as he aged. And my banana ball faded and speckled out. (Both somewhat expected with these morphs).

Can someone who is familiar with these genes tell me what changes I should expect or should it (theoretically) remain as clean as this?

Dumerils baby did not come with brain cell. Should I ask for a refund?

Obviously I’m not asking for a refund 😅 BUT today is the third time I’m feeding my Dumerils and feeding has been…interesting.

I knew he ate live and the breeder said that her babies usually do but transition well to FT as adults. I tried FT and scented FT anyway with no interest. So I offered live. He struck a couple times and missed so I held the mouse (sorry little guy) by the tongs to make it easier and HE STILL MISSED SEVERAL TIMES. Eventually, I just let the mouse run free and I guess at some point he ate it on his own. I just gave him another one this morning and same deal where he strikes multiple times even when I’m holding it and doesn’t get it. Are the babies usually this difficult to figure out feeding or did I just get a special case? My friend also has a juvenile Dumerils from a different breeder and hers also will only eat live and can be picky.

My BCIs are all absolute trash dumpsters with their feedings so I just want to make sure I shouldn’t try something different.

Starter Kit

Hello hello! I’m a long time reptile owner who is looking into an axolotl. I typically stay away from all things aquatic because things like nitrates and pH intimidate me 😂 I have two questions.

  1. Would this be an appropriate startup kit? Their reptile ones are overpriced (imo) and include some outdated husbandry. I don’t mind paying a little more if it’s all the things I need ready to go but don’t want to pay unnecessarily for crap that won’t work.

  2. I actually want a very specific axolotl that is at my local pet store. I’ve read you have to cycle the tank 6-8 weeks first though. Is it possible to safely care for them prior to waiting out the whole cycling thing?

Dwarf Expectations

I’m trying to be as realistic as possible when it comes to looking at a large snake. I love looking at Retics and Burmese Pythons. My comfort level tops out at about 8’ though so I was consider a male from one of the dwarf lines.

Do the dwarf breedings for these species actually stay smaller or is that just a marketing gimmick?

I feel like by the time it’s “too big” it would be insanely difficult to rehome. I want to do what is right by the snake but also would love to give one a good life.

For reference, I live alone and am a 125# woman which is mostly why I’m hesitant. (Pic is not a dwarf posting, just pretty and using for attention)

Left his door open so that he could free roam around and his brain cell overloaded into Paralysis Mode (2 hours and he never left his house 🤦‍♀️)

I currently have 3 BCIs and have an open enclosure (4x2x2 - can be a starter enclosure that they grow out of). My BCIs have SOLD ME on boas but I’m considering buying a different species.

Peruvians are currently at the top of my list but I also like the look of Suriname boas. My friend has told me that they tend to be spicy though. Can people who work with this species confirm/deny the legitimacy of that?

Found my bucket list reptile at an expo last weekend!! And I…didn’t buy it. I know that there is a lot to consider for a setup and don’t want to rush into anything.

Does anyone have a Caiman Lizard? What enclosure do you have? I sorry that all the ones I can buy are just not going to be big enough for a full grown adult. Is a grow tent a safe option with this species? Should I make my own? Or am I just overthinking it and there would be a good premade option out there?

Would also love any tips or recommendations with caring for these guys.

Looking for some education on this gene. I’ve heard it can cause neuro deficits and am curious how prevalent those problems are and if it would be unethical to breed a snake that has this gene in their inventory.

**Pic of snake I would LIKE to buy but am hesitant.
