Philosophy Meetup - The Concept of Enlightenment - Sunday, Aug 23, 1:30 PM @ Work Café Santander (Williamsburg)

Hi NYC philosophers,

We're organizing another meetup for anyone interested in discussing philosophy and connecting with like-minded people in the city. Here's the plan:

🗓 When: Sunday, Aug 23, 1:30 PM

📍 Where: Work Café Santander, 85-87 N 6th St, Williamsburg

For this session, we'll be reading the chapter "The Concept of Enlightenment" from Dialectic of Enlightenment by Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer (read it here). Adorno and Horkheimer criticize dominant articulations of Enlightenment rationality, arguing that that mastery of nature as ascribed by much of Enlightenment thinking break down into old forms of barbarism.

Guitar lessons

Hi neighbors!

I am relatively new to playing and have worked with a teacher but lessons got moved online, and it’s not ideal for me. I also felt he moved a bit fast. I have an electric guitar and am into blues, pop, r&b, and folk, to name a few genres. Look forward to receiving recommendations!

New to vintage bicycling. Which is better?

The owner of the turquoise says it’s a cadre but rear breaks not working. Owner of the white hasn’t specified what’s wrong.

Refurbished Peugeot

Saw this at a local bike pop up sale. Newly tuned. I know the images aren’t good, but is this worth $650?

Philosophy meetup this Sunday (5/31) @ 1:30 @ Maiden Lane Public Atrium — Plato’s Crito

I’m excited to announce we are going all the way back to Ancient Greece for our next discussion, facilitated by Neeraj! In Plato’s “Crito,” which takes place shortly after the events of Plato’s “Apology,” an imprisoned (and death-sentenced) Socrates debates his friend Crito about whether or not he should take Crito’s help in trying to escape prison. Socrates speaks about the moral obligations he has to adhere to society’s judgements, however ill-founded they may seem, and his role in serving as a mirror to society. This text has sparked discussions over the obligation of citizens to enter into, and adhere to, a social contract.
