For people with ADHD, what does it feel like to know you need to do something but be unable to start?

For ADHD people: does this sound familiar? Knowing you need to do something but feeling unable to start?

I'm trying to understand the behaviour of someone I know (mid 20s, 6yrs into Uni degree), and I'm particularly interested in hearing from autistic people about whether this is something you've experienced.

This person is an adult and currently lives at home. They have difficulty taking steps toward independence or "moving forward" such as finding a part-time/casual job or learning to drive for example is very hard for them.

What confuses me is that they don't necessarily seem unaware of the problem. They seem to know they need to make progress and can sometimes express frustration about not doing so.

But when these topics are brought up, they can become very anxious, shut down, and become unable to engage with the conversation.

I'm not asking whether you think this person is autistic, and I'm not trying to diagnose them. I realise these behaviours can have many explanations.

I'm interested in understanding whether autistic people experience anything like this, particularly the feeling of knowing that you need/want to do something but being unable to initiate it, or becoming overwhelmed when the subject is raised.

  1. If you've experienced this yourself, what does it feel like from the inside?

  2. And what do you find helpful from other people versus what makes the situation worse?

EDIT: Thank you to everyone's replies so far! It's been an eye opener for sure. Given the similarities in everyone's descriptions, is their a term (medical or otherwise) that describes this?

Adult child struggling to become independent. How do you help without making things worse?

I'm looking for some perspective on a situation involving an adult child living at home and currently studying at Uni (6 yrs & counting).

They seem to have quite a lot of difficulty taking steps toward independence or "moving forward" given they'll be graduating in a couple years time. Things like finding a part-time/casual job or learning to drive for example is very difficult for them.

The part I'm struggling to understand is that this doesn't necessarily seem like a case of simply not caring or not understanding that these things are important.

They say they know they need to make progress, the importance to do certain things and at times appear frustrated with themselves about it. However, when these subjects are brought up, they can become extremely anxious, shut down, and become unable to engage with the conversation.

I'm trying to work out how me and the people around them (family) can help. There's a difficult balance between being supportive and giving them space, versus potentially enabling them to remain stuck.

For parents who have experienced something similar with an adult child, how did you approach it? What helped, and what made things worse?

I'm not looking for a diagnosis or trying to label the person. I'm mainly trying to understand the behaviour and work out a constructive approach.

Family is worried for them, but they know it's a sensitive topic at best. We've tried bringing such topics up over the years, but any traction disappears quite quickly due to various situations popping up.

How to remove TFN from Saver accounts?

Wondering if anyone knows how to remove a TFN from an account, in particular Goal Saver and NetBank Saver accounts?

I've seen some posts elsewhere (not this subreddit) that deemed it possible and apparently not as difficult as some of the other banks.

When do Christmas Casual hiring open up?

Per the title. Also, anyone got suggestions of some the more common stores that do a mass hiring wave? (e.g. Coles, Woolies, Kmart, Myer, Adairs, Nike etc)

Friend of mine has missed the boat last couple years due to realising way too late and not sure where to start looking.

PHI Rebate Tier - Better to choose a higher rebate tier?

https://www.ato.gov.au/individuals-and-families/medicare-and-private-health-insurance/private-health-insurance-rebate/income-thresholds-and-rates-for-the-private-health-insurance-rebate

Looking at the ATO info here, I was wondering if you're income could be in between rebate tiers, would it make sense to choose the rebate tier that captures the higher income?

For instance, if my income was $123k approx (could be a bit higher or lower), would it be better to choose the higher income bracket or lower income bracket for the rebate?

Also if you end up in either situation, is the amount offset or to be paid static or incremental depending on actual income amount?

edit: rewriting this - since it wasn't very clear

CBA App Transfer Limit Increased To $40k?

For the longest time, I've always known that that daily max limit for transferring between accounts with family or friends for example was $20k.

Even the CommBank website says this.

https://www.commbank.com.au/support/how-do-i-transfer-money.html

Logging into the CBA App, there's an option to increase the limit up to $40k. Is there something I'm not understanding or missing?

Turning right at intersection - who has right of way?

Saw 2 cars both wanting to turn right, but they’re on opposite sides of the intersection.

Got me thinking who should go first. I haven’t found myself in this situation, but am thinking #1 then #2

1st Aug Energy Rates Increase - Better to switch before or after?

Almost everyone has been receiving the yearly letters from their energy providers that 1st Aug energy prices will increase.

Is it better to switch now or after 1st Aug?

Looking around online, I've mostly seen people switching now (which is also my inclination), but others are waiting it out to see what August brings.

PHI Tax Statement - Change in Premium paid?

Reading my PHI Tax statement and noticed the lines for “Your premiums eligible for Australian Government rebate” appear higher than what I actually paid for the year.

Contacting my PHI is the next step, but was wondering if I’m misunderstanding the tax statement and it’s meant to be like this across the industry?

Australian Consumer Law Clarification - White Goods

Family bought this LG fridge from TheGoodGuys last year.

https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/lg-664l-side-by-side-refrigerator-gs-b599mbl

Recently started seeing a problem with the fridge although as a customer we’re no expert other than we know something isn’t right/out of the ordinary.

Rang up the LG in-house repair team and they’ve never seen this before. Had photos to show the issue.

They refused to identify this as a problem and couldn’t elaborate any further even after talking with a product team.

Offered to send out a repair man where I’ll be charged a call out fee if there’s no problem diagnosed.

I’m an absolute novice when it comes to ACL, but in previous situations even a call out for a repair man to inspect a problem/potential problem never had a cost associated with it.

We the customer are identifying a problem and require professional help to resolve an issue. And there might not be a resolution to this or we’re being charged.

Have I been misunderstanding how the law works?

Help LG Fridge Condensation Outside The Fridge

Purchased this LG fridge last year.

https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/lg-664l-side-by-side-refrigerator-gs-b599mbl

Recently started seeing condensation appear in the gap between the 2 doors for freezer and fridge on the door itself on the freezer side.

Anyone else experienced anything like this?

There’s been no change in environment, atmosphere or how we use the fridge. The fridge door has always felt easier to close from a sealing perspective whereas the freezer door is a bit more tight.

Rang up the LG in-house repair team and they’ve never seen this before. Refused to identify this as a problem and couldn’t elaborate any further even after talking with a product team. Offered to send out a repair man where I might be charged a call out fee! Not part of warranty they say although we’re telling them we have a problem.
