How to live if you believe free will is an illusion?

How can you believe in moral culpability? That some choice is commendable or not?

Should people really be punished? Or just have their freedoms limited to minimize societal harm? Should we feel sorry for people who make bad choices? Or angry? Why?

Should you feel indignant if someone hurts you? Or just regret that you were a victim?

1031 Exchange, how long before living in it?

I have a rental condo in VA. Thinking of selling and buying (1031 exchange) a condo in OH, renting it out a year, and then living in it. Is that long enough?

Some places says it needs to be a rental for two years. Any experience with this and the IRS?

What if husband files for divorce but does not continue?

My friend's husband petition for divorce in January. They had an initial hearing and my friend has the 3yr old child for 5/7 of the week. No finances discussed yet. She has not received a penny and her joint bank accounts were emptied out by someone. In Virginia they must wait to this coming January to finish the divorce. His lawyer quit. Husband was working full-time and she was stay at home Mom by their both desires. In January she took the child and went to a women's shelter. Now she's in government housing with a low paying job.

What happens if he doesn't want to continue the divorce? Does she never get any money? Does she have to file for divorce to get alimony? Is that another year? How can she get her lawyer paid by the same joint account they had before the separation?

[IRS USA] Paid Caregiver taxes on 941 verses Schedule H

I did this in 2025, about $37,000 paid for the EIN Caregiving business, on 941 quarterly forms. But my dad has lots of deductions, and the IRS now says he owes $15,000 on his 2025 personal return, where I suppose it was to be reported on his Schedule H instead. So our tax preparer says the IRS needs to credit the SSN personal tax with the amount paid to the EIN. And she said it would take a very long time indeed to do so.

So she has an IRS friend that will do it. He was notified about this in the Spring. We now have a written notice from the IRS saying it is due immediately or else they will levy. The IRS friend says NOT to contact the phone number on the form, as that will complicate and delay the process. He said the real process wil take over a year and that they wont levy for at least a year.

So now all I have is the word of some IRS guy I don't know who is doing a favor for our tax accountant that we sort of have known in a non-professional manner for a few years.

So for me, its a lot of trust that we have to have without any paperwork from the IRS guy who is doing a favor.

Do two planets collide together at the same speed regardless of either one's size?

I suspect that any two larger planets would collide more quickly.

Insulating behind brick half wall, rock wool chunks?

In Virginian moountains. One side of my house is half brick and the top half is wood siding that Im replacing. 1960 construction. Behind the brick is an air gap, then roofing felt paper and then sheathing, then no insulation between the 2x4 stud walls, and then 3/4" of plaster interior wall.

When I replace the upper half outside wood siding I'd like to remove the sheathing and put in some rock wool, and replace with new sheathing, then house wrap, and then an air gap and then new wood siding.

But how to insulate the lower half of the wall behind the brick?

Im thinking of breaking up the rock wool batts into chucks and just stuffing it down there loosly.

Any better ideas?

I made a nice ATP but the defender smacked it way out back to me, over the next courts net. So for fun I knocked it back into his court actually going over the net of the court next to us and around our net to win the point!

So I understand a person can cross the net on a follow through hit. Today I had the opportunity of running around the net and then hitting the ball. But when I ran around the net it was not a follow through.

So is running around the net legal? Before striking the ball?

Or for that matter is leaning over the net and then hitting the ball legal?

My apartment is rented to A, B, and C. I get one check from them for the full amount each month, and A paid the full deposit of one month rent.

A is moving out August 1. B and C found a new roommate D. B, C and D have signed the new lease. Normally my contract asks for a deposit at signing, to reserve the apartment for all of us, not worrying about losing a renter.

Should I ask for a complete deposit? Last time it required about $100 of cleaning, which they paid, and they pay rent well but dont like to clean. Normally I inspect and clean and return remaining deposit in mid August.

▲ 3 r/Insulation+1 crossposts

The top half of the exterior wall is wood and the bottom half is brick. In Virginia and on the worst day gets down to five degrees or up to 100°. The wall faces East and only has the morning sun, no winds. Behind the wood exterior is a half inch sheathing and no insulation between the studs. Plaster interior walls. Good ceiling insulation and ventilation.

I could add 1.5 inches thickness to the wood top half as the Brick extends 3.5" out from the face of the wood. I can box around the windows. I have new paneling ready to replace the top half as the wood there is flaking badly.

I could:

  1. replace the wood panels with new

  2. add the new panels on top of the old

  3. add poly iso boards under the new wood panels

  4. face the foil towards inside or out

  5. leave an air gap under the new panels

6)) pull off sheathing and insert rock wool between the studs as much and as low as I can

What do you suggest?
