How HEC "need based" scholarships rules for QAU self finance expose a broken system

i really need to vent about the broken, hypocritical scholarship system in qau. right now if u get into a uni on a self finance or self support seat, ur immediately banned from applying for major scholarships like hec need based or ehsaas. the system uses this lazy logic that if u chose self finance, ur family must be rich enough to afford it. they completely ignore reality.

missing the regular morning merit list by 0.5% doesnt mean ur family suddenly got rich also, its not pay to play. at qau, the self finance list is still highly competitive. the merit score needed for self finance at qau is often way higher than the regular morning merit at many other universities. these students worked hard and earned their seats. treating them like rich kids who bought their way in is just wrong.

the financial logic makes zero sense too. a regular student at an expensive uni like nust can get a need based scholarship. bcz their tuition is so high, the govt spends a massive amount of money on that one student. with that exact same amount of money, they could fund three struggling self finance students at a public uni like qau. the systm would rather spend a fortune on one student than save three poor students at a public college.

what makes it even worse is that these major scholarships require complete bank statements, utility bills, and income certificates anyway.

if the whole point of a scrutiny committee is to check actual financial need, why do they instantly reject self finance students before even looking at their documents? a student whose family is genuinely poor and struggling to pay self finance fees through heavy debts or sacrifices gets automatically blocked by a computer filter.

meanwhile, a student on a regular seat whose family is much more financially stable easily passes through just bcz they have the right seat label. the policy completely defeats the purpose of need based aid by looking at administrative checkboxes instead of actual poverty.

QAU HOSTEL (BOYS)

what is the process of getting qau internal hostels?

i'll probably be considered an out-stationed student because my home is a 7-hour drive from islamabad. hopefully, i'll get admission into qau on either a regular or self-finance (morning) seat.

i watched several utube videos on this, but almost all of them are 2 to 4 years old. they all mentioned having to physically go to the h-6 type hostel to submit a physical application, and that SAFARISH is the only way to get a room in the first semester. is that really true? i ask because i noticed there is now a separate online portal for new students to apply for accommodation.

i'll be very thankful if anyone can clarify this. can i get a hostel room in the first semester? other universities like lums and nust give you a room right away or put you on a waiting list n does qau do the same? i also heard that rooms are given on a first-come, first-served basis. please help me out with tips on how to secure a hostel room as early as possible.

I used to think "Dhandli" was just social media noise. Then it happened to my cousin

i always thought the talk about election rigging and dhandli culture was just internet noise, political slang, or propaganda from losing parties. but recently, my family experienced the reality of it firsthand.

my cousin is a lecturer at a govt. college in a xyz district in punjab. without his consent or any prior permission, the college principal just put his name down to serve as a presiding officer at a local voting center for the recent elections.

a day after his name was listed, he started getting calls from unknown numbers demanding he meet them at a specific location he was terrified and refused to go. shortly after, while he was sitting in the staff room, a colleague who was also part of the polling administration cryptically warned him to stay put.

a few minutes later, one policeman and two men in civilian clothes walked into the staff room. they cornered him and explicitly told him to rig the vote by stamping blank pages in favor of the pmln candidate. my cousin stood his ground and refused. they shrugged it off, said they did their job by telling him, and promised to see him the next day.

on election morning at the polling station.. the same men approached him warmly, repeating the demand. when he refused again, they dragged him into a private room and locked him inside. they threatened his physical safety and told him he would lose his government job if he didn't comply....

after being locked up for an hour he managed to call us in a panic thankfully, our family has a few upper connections. we pulled some strings, and they told us that out of respect for our taluqaat,,, they would waive the demand and let him go but on one strict condition that he must remain absolutely silent about whatever else happened at that station

it is wild how the entire system is an open secret. the people who are supposed to protect the vote, like the police, are actively facilitating the rigging.

it makes me sick to realize that the only reason my cousin walked away safe is because we had taluqaat. what happens to ordinary citizens who don't have upper connections to bail them out? they either get destroyed or forced into compliance.

Rawalpindi/Islamabad to Mansehra bus service?

A.o.A, need to travel from Pindi/Islamabad to Mansehra. Planning to leave either morning or around midday.

what are the best bus services running right now? I know about Faisal Movers at Mandi Mor and daewoo, but do they have departures at these times, and what are the current ticket prices?

If I can't catch a luxury bus, what's the scene with local transport? Do Hiace or Coasters from Faizabad and Pirwadhai take the Hazara Motorway or the old GT Road? Want to avoid traffic and reach fast.

Any tips or terminal recommendations would be great. Thanks!

Am I cooked? NET showed 0/200 attempted!

I attempted all 200/200 questions. As soon as the 3-hour timer ended, I clicked on the "Finish Exam" button literally a few seconds later.

A popup instantly appeared with a warning saying "Warning: 0 of 200 attempted". My heart literally dropped. I kept raising my hand but no invigilator came to my seat at that moment eventually,, invigilator told(not specific to me, to everyone) to just press Home + Alt on the keyboard, and my screen went back to the normal state like everyone else's.

Has ANYONE else faced this software glitch before? Does this mean my answers weren't saved, or does the portal auto-save everything before the timer runs out? Please tell me my hard work didn't just go to waste. 😭

Is QAU actually worth it or a trap? (physics)

I want to take admission in BS physics at QAU because my goal is academia and QAU perfectly aligns with my interest like theoretical physics. But recently I heard some very concerning things online and I need honest reality check from seniors.

Main thing that shocked me is that I read a post saying graduating ratio of physics major is extremely low, like only 5 students graduate on time out of 70. Is this horrific ratio actually true? Some students say prof are responsible bcz they dont take lectures and just TAs look after classes, and they mark hard just to make impactful image. But others say its total on students bcz physics is hardest course and students who enroll dont even know basic calculus 1 or 2 bcz QAU uses HEC USAT filter which never determine quality of student. What is the real situation and who is responsible, profs or students?

Also the campus environment is big issue for me. I heard about drugs, severe infrastructure issues and bureaucratic culture. I can manage and keep my head down to focus on books but if my parents know about this environment even if its true or not they will never let me study here. Is the environment really that extreme or people are just exaggerating online? Can a low key student survive and graduate on time here without getting stuck? Please guide.

LUMS Should Slowly Introduce Mandatory Senior Thesis Culture

I often see in this subreddit people comparing LUMS with other top Pakistani universities... sometimes they’re right to keep LUMS lower in some areas, but a lot of times people also ignore what LUMS is actually trying to be.

Like honestly, LUMS is already pretty different from the typical Pakistani university model, but I still feel there’s a huge gap in research culture overall. And I think one major reason is that LUMS has a much smaller masters/PhD ecosystem compared to places like QAU, which naturally affects research output, publications, rankings etc. That’s why in some fields like physics, QAU is honestly way ahead research-wise even if LUMS has more overall prestige/image.

I also often see LUMS pushing more for masters/PhD enrollment now through ads and etc... which honestly makes sense because strong graduate programs naturally increase research output and academic depth. But I feel another thing that could really help long-term is gradually building a proper senior thesis culture at UG level too, especially in research heavy fields like physics, math, econ, CS etc.

Not suddenly for everyone, and definitely not as another useless “final year report”, but as an actual serious part of UG education.

I feel one thing top places like Princeton/Reed do really well is pushing undergrad students toward some independent intellectual work before graduating. Even if most theses r not groundbreaking, the environment still changes because students thinking beyond coursework & actually engaging with research culture early.

And honestly I think this could make LUMS even more unique in Pakistan academically, not just in the “good jobs/placements” sense. It could slowly create a stronger intellectual/research environment overall, improve faculty-student collaboration, and even help build a better pipeline for future researchers and graduate students inside Pakistan instead of only depending on coursework culture.

But obviously this only works if done properly otherwise it’ll become the typical copy paste thesis culture that already exists in many places here(especially south asia). so if something like this ever happens, it should happen slowly with proper mentorship and standards instead of forcing every student into meaningless research.

I don't know if this is the right place but sorry in advance. I just have to share this because I can’t explain how intense it feels. I’m an 18 y/o guy and this happened a few times this month.

I’ll be sleeping and then I suddenly wake up. It’s not sleep paralysis, it is just a very soft and smooth wake up. But for maybe 1 or 2 seconds, I have no memory of who I am. It is like my mind is wide awake but "me" hasn't started working yet.

I literally ask myself "Where am I?" and "Who am I?" and I don't mean which house or room I'm in. I mean why am I in this world? It feels like I was just sent to Earth and I’m seeing everything for the first time like a stranger. It gives me crazy goosebumps.

In that moment, I suddenly feel like EVERYTHING is connected. I think that if one tiny thing, some random xyz event in the past, didn't happen exactly then, I wouldn't be in this bed at this exact moment. It’s like my mind scans every possibility and sees that every single event is linked. It is like seeing the code of the universe before my memories load.

It’s the most pure moment ever. It is like I’m just a soul realizing I'm in a body, and then after a few seconds, my normal self kicks back in and I eventually just fall back asleep.

Does anyone else get this? It’s like catching your brain rebooting and it’s so beautiful it makes me want to cry. How is our mind even able to feel that?

I shared what I experience to LLM and that said: What you are experiencing is a rare glimpse into pure consciousness before your "ego" (your name, memories, and identity) takes over. Biologically, your brain's awareness centers wake up a few seconds before the regions that store your personal history, creating a "clean slate" effect. Because you have no personal labels in those seconds, your mind naturally perceives the world as one giant, interconnected web of cause and effect rather than separate pieces. It feels like "seeing the code" because you are experiencing existence as a physical fact rather than a personal story.
