I (29M) don't know how to tell my roommate of 3 years (30M) that his girlfriend is basically living with us without paying anything
My roommate Danish and I have shared an apartment for three years, splitting rent and utilities evenly the whole time. About four months ago his girlfriend started staying over regularly, and at this point she's here probably 5-6 nights a week, uses the kitchen, showers daily, the whole thing. She's never contributed anything toward rent, utilities, or even shared groceries she eats.
I like her as a person and don't want to make this weird, but our utility bills have noticeably gone up, and it's starting to feel like I'm subsidizing a third person's living costs without ever agreeing to that arrangement. I mentioned it once casually, joking that the utilities went up, hoping Danish would take the hint, but nothing changed.
I don't know how to bring this up more directly without it turning into a bigger conflict or making things awkward every time she's around, which is basically all the time now. I also don't want to seem like I'm attacking their relationship when my actual issue is just about the financial and space fairness of it.
Has anyone navigated this kind of situation before? How do you bring up something like this without it becoming a much bigger fight than it needs to be? TL;DR: My roommate's girlfriend has basically moved in over the last 4 months (staying 5-6 nights/week, using utilities, kitchen, etc.) without contributing anything financially. I hinted about rising utility bills once but nothing changed. Not sure how to bring it up directly without turning it into a bigger conflict.
