Seeking literature on battleship armor schemes

Hello Sub,

I am currently working on a paper and I'm looking for detailed literature about the armor schemes of battleships. While you can find brief mentions of this in almost any non-fiction book on the subject, I am searching for information regarding the underlying design philosophies, the specific function of individual armor plates, and how impact and incidence angles play a role in design.

In short, I am looking for a work that goes really deep into the technical aspects of armor protection. Can anyone recommend anything?

German-language sources would be ideal, but English-language texts are also welcome.

To what extent could the fate of the HMAS Sydney have been reconstructed without the testimonies of the Kormoran crew?

[Note regarding the framing of this question: The core of the inquiry is the traceability of historical source material; the "What-if" scenario is used solely for illustrative purposes.]

It is November 1941. The auxiliary cruiser Kormoran has just destroyed the HMAS Sydney, when fire spreads to the cargo hold, ignites the stored mines, and sinks the entire ship with all hands.

Under these circumstances, would we have ever learned about their battle?

The HMAS Sydney would have remained a mysterious loss at sea—presumably a "lost treasure" with an even higher legendary status than it already has today. The Kormoran, on the other hand, would have been just another ordinary auxiliary cruiser sunk under unknown circumstances during a raid, likely known only to historians and naval enthusiasts.

By comparing routes and combining information from both sides, one could determine that both ships vanished in the same general area at a similar time. But would that information be enough to conclude that both ships actually encountered each other and fought their unique battle? The original survivor testimonies were already hard to believe. Without historical facts, would anyone even entertain the idea that an ordinary auxiliary cruiser could stand a chance against a regular cruiser? Or would even the wildest conspiracy theorists shy away from such a bold claim?

Without the position data provided by the Kormoran survivors, both wrecks would likely still be undiscovered today. No one would have any verifiable information regarding the fate of either vessel.

From a historical and analytical perspective, what do you think? Without the "coincidence" of the surviving witnesses, would the chain of events ever have been conclusively reconstructible for naval intelligence, or would the case have remained an eternal "cold case"? Even if the wrecks had been discovered by pure chance decades later, would that have been enough to reconstruct the history?

Geneva drive

Hello everyone,

for a new MOC I need the smallest possible Geneva drive or an equivalent mechanism that performs the same function. Does anyone know how to build such a gearbox? The known versions found online are all a bit too large for my purposes.

Seydlitz

After it became apparent during World War II just how powerful weapon aircraft carriers were, the Kriegsmarine began converting several ships into carriers. One of the ships selected for conversion was the Seydlitz, the fourth ship of the Admiral Hipper class. The conversion was initiated but was never completed due to the chaos of the war.

This model shows the Seydlitz in its planned final state: featuring two aircraft lifts, a large island, and a catapult system similar to the one on the Graf Zeppelin.

Testleser gesucht: "Resque - Schwarze Wächter"

Hallo Leute,

Shimakaze 1:200 Moc

Hello Sub,

What do you think about my design of the Japanese DD Shimakaze? I’m planning to add her to my collection soon.

My want to complete the entire lineage of 'Special-Type' DDs in the future. From Fubuki to Tachibana.

Which ship of this long lineage is your favorite? I’m still deciding which one to tackle next after the Shima – maybe the Akizuki or the classic Kagero?

Let me know what you think of the details!"

Shimakaze

Its time to add some japanese destroyers to my collection.

First one: The Shimakaze

She was experimental destroyer of the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II and the only ship of her class ever completed. Designed as the lead ship of a new „Type C“ destroyer series, she was built to be faster and more powerfully armed than any other destroyer of her time. Laid down in 1941 and commissioned in May 1943, Shimakaze became legendary for her extreme performance. She reached an incredible 40.9 knots during trials — making her one of the fastest destroyers in the world. Her massive powerplant delivered over 79,000 shaft horsepower, and she was the only destroyer in naval history armed with 15 torpedo tubes (three quintuple launchers), all capable of firing the feared Type 93 „Long Lance“ torpedoes. This combination of unmatched speed and overwhelming torpedo firepower made her a nightmare on paper for any enemy fleet.

Although her combat career was relatively short, she participated in important operations in the Philippines. On 11 November 1944, she was sunk by American carrier aircraft during the Battle of Ormoc Bay.
