Cerbo GX Being Weird

Cerbo GX Being Weird

I’m going a bit insane with my Cerbo!

I’m using the ET112 Grid meter to measure my incoming grid use…

I admit that the meter is quite far from the Cerbo….

But, if i have the Cerbo with just the RA485 to USB adapter and a 12v power source plugged in, i get live grid wattage poling every maybe 5 seconds… all good

But, and this is the freaky bit…

As soon as i power the Cerbo GX from the Lynx Distributer, the wattage meter reading freezes on the last measured reading (see image showing a frozen 562 watts)

The Lynx Distributor is also connected to a Lynx Shunt and a small step down transformer to give another device 5v, but otherwise that’s it.

What in the heck is going on here!!

I thought maybe not enough amps to power up the Cerbo and the Lynx etc, but I’ve tried a bigger battery and same issue…

I’m going a bit mad

Any help massively appreciated

UK G98 Application

Hi guys

I’m just finishing off my DIY 4kw solar, 3.68kwh inverter install with a 16kwh battery..

It’ll soon be time to make my G98 application

My question, does anyone know if the forms attached here are all I need to fill in and send to the DNO?

I’ve seen another MUCH MUCH longer set of application forms online with loads of testing result fields to fill in and so I’m a bit confused which to send in.

Naturally I’d rather do the shorter simpler ones (attached), but I’m really trying to avoid looking like I have no idea what I’m doing to the DNO

Any assistance much appreciated

Thanks

ET112 - Can’t get RS485 to work on Cerbo GX 🤯

Im going round in circles trying to get my ET112 meter to register in the Cerbo GX portal…

Can anyone help?

I’ve seen numerous people struggling with this as week and I’ve followed all sorts of suggestions

I’m connected to the ET112 with an RJ45 Ethernet cable, using pins 4,5 for cons and pin 8 for ground - as stated in the ET112 manual…

But just get zip / zero /bugger all on the Cerbo.

Is the only way to bite the built and buy the Victron USB to RS485 dongle??

Thanks in advance

Removing Render

How hard do you think it’d be to remove this render back to brick

I think the render is probably about 10/15 years old…

If it’s likely to damage the bricks in the process and turn into a nightmare I’d rather not do it at all 😂

Thanks 🙏

UK Work Place Pension - Fund Choice

Hi Guys,

I moved my work place pension funds from a high risk tech ETF to mostly very low risk bonds instead

This was considering that we may see the US markets crash soon

Was this a good idea?

MPPT Without Battery ok?

Hi guys

I have an 85A Victron MPPT SmartSolar MPPT250-85 - 250Voc PV Charge Controller - VE.Can

Also a Multiplus 2 - 48/5000/70/230, Cerbo GX

I’m just starting to commission the system, but still waiting (maybe another month!) for a 16kwh 48v battery coming from China…

I didn’t realise how pretty much all the Victron kit can’t really be set up without the battery and so I’m having to wait ages before I can get going…

I’ve just finished installing 8 x 535w panels running into the above MPPT and I’d love to know how much they’re producing, but I don’t think I can safely turn on the MPPT until my battery arrives ( as I think you need the battery to power up the MPPT)…. Is this true?

Do I just need to be patient

Thanks

Can’t start Multiplus 2 48/5000/70/230

Hey guys,

Trying to configure my Multiplus 2 and so have connected 4 x 12v 8ah batteries up in series and connected to the Multiplus…

I get a spark from the battery and read 53v before connecting the Multiplus, but once connected I get no life from the MP whatsoever

I also only get a reading of 6v on the Multiplus battery terminals when the battery is connected…

My proper 16kwh 48v battery doesn’t arrive from China for another month and I’m keen to program and play with the MP

Can anyone help

Thanks 🤙

System Sanity Check - UK

Hey all,

I’m just about to turn this system on for the first time, could you all please sanity (most importantly safety) check it for me please 🙏

It’s in / on a garden room in the UK

Electricians have down all the house connections, plus fitted a new consumer unit in the garden room with a dedicated 20amp RCBO for the solar kit.

I’ve done everything after the 20a rcbo.

I’ve had help from Bimble Solar who have been awesome, but thought good to check with the community on here as well.

I feel pretty much up to speed on the technicalities of it, although I’ve found trying to nail down specific guidelines on Earth/ground connections very difficult, so any comment on that particularly welcome.

Cheers!

Rental Property Licence Renewal

Hi Guys,

I have a 2 bed rental flat in Newham…

The council licence expires in late June…

Would you wait for Newham to chase to renew, or fear being unlicensed and proactively chase them up to make payment to renew.

Thanks

Damaged wax/paint

Hi guys

Blue 2019 i3 here… (love it btw)

While scrubbing off bird crap, Ive taken off the wax and dulled down the shine of the paint finish.

The blue plastic is still blue, but it’s totally lost it’s mojo in that area

Can someone recommend a product to bring it back?

(I’m in the UK)

Thanks

Multiplus 2 48/5000/70-230 Cabling

Hi Guys,

I think as has happened with many in the past, I’m struggling to confidently spec my MultiPlus cabling

In in the UK btw

As you can see in my detailed schematics, my MP is in my shed and connected with 6mm2 cables

In only planning to use the AC-In terminal so a simple set up.

I had thought that using 6mm2 cables protected with suitable Bi-Directional RCDs was ok, however when you search the web I often come back with AI search results labeled as coming from a Victron origin dating that 10mm2 or even 16mm2 is the necessary AC connection cabling…. That has made me concerned that my 6mm2 is under sized.

Anyone able to assure me a 6mm2 feed on a 20a breaker is ok?

And my second question, and I suspect the harder one….. My Chinese Mason Seplos battery is 16kwh… what size earth cable (see the “?” on the drawing) is needed between battery and MP (I’m happy to match the DC cable size if necessary, I just need a firm answer as again AI says different things daily)

And my final question - Is the earth running (as seen in the beautiful schematic) from the MP to shed CU, then shed CU back to the main house CU sufficient… Again, Some AI suggests I need to match the DC battery cables for this too, which is crazy since that would be a 70mm2 earth cable about 20m long!! $$$

Any help much appreciated

Earthing Solar System

I know I’m gonna get blasted for asking this… feel free to hammer my question with a response like “get an electrician etc”, but in addition to those reply’s I usually get really helpfully responses from a few awesome dudes so fingers crossed they’re reading 🤞 🙏

I’ve pretty much finished my 8 panel, 1 x 3.68kw Inverter and 16kwh battery install…

I’m just struggling to get a solid / trustworthy answer on how to earth the kit in the image safely

All the gear mentioned above inc the solar panels are in/on my garden room which has a new (professionally installed) secondly consumer unit on a 6mm2 cable from the main house CU.

The inverter shown at the top, has a 6mm feed from the shed CU and is on a bi-directional RCBO, so does have an earth via that cable.

I’m now trying to work out if it’s safe, to fit an earth block near the inverter and run separate 6mm earth cables to the Solar panels on the roof, the MPPT controller and the 16kwh battery case.

If I need a thicker than 6mm earth cable from the solar kit back to the main house CU it’s a massive job, so hoping 6mm earth is ok but obviously not gonna risk anything dangerous…

🙏 Cheers guys

Do we earth solar panels in the UK?

Hi guys,

I’m fitting 8x panels to my garden room in the UK…

Example installations I’ve seen on videos / images done appear to have earth cables connecting them back to inverter / grounding point.

Should I be running a daisy chain earth wire through to each panel?

Or don’t bother??

Thanks loads

Best way to finish open edges around panels?

Hey Guys,

I’m planning to fit 8x panels to my garden room in the UK…. Similar to the image here.

I’m just trying to work out how to block off the open edges (the 2 sides where I do t have the frame rails), since these will be big enough to let birds etc in..

A nice and neat solution would be great….

I’m aiming to mount the panels tight to the rubber roof, so only 30mm gap under the panels if that affects what I use to block the gaps…

I think whatever I use to block the holes should allow air through since it’ll be the main ventilation points

Any suggestions very welcome

Many thanks 🙏

Earthing Victron System ??

Hey Guys,

I’m getting close to finishing off my Grid-Tied 4kw Victron Solar and 16kwh Battery system..

Apart from the Inverter connection to the house distribution board I’ve DIY’d it all.

I think I’m sorted generally cabling-wise as had assistance specifying bits from my solar equipment seller, only thing they aren’t happy helping with is the earth/grounding side of things..

I’m looking for clarity on how the Inverter/ MPPT/ Lynx Distributer and the battery unit get safely grounded.

Also, which gauge of cable to use for those earth links

From my research I believe it’s pretty straight forward, with all the devices earth terminals needing to be bonded together to share a common ground…with the overall grounding coming from the inverters earth cable running back to my mains electrics distribution board.

That same earthing link also connects to the negative DC bus bar on the Lynx Distributer… PLEASE DO TELL ME IF IM WRONG! ?

But… the cable gauge mentioned in some info is suggesting using cable slightly thinner than the main battery DC cables (mine are 70mm2), so for the earth use something like 50mm2.

I don’t mind spending the money of using 50mm2, but all the images I see of this kind of kit installed it looks like people are using a much smaller gauge like a 6mm2 or similar so I’m a bit confused.

Any help much appreciated

Hey guys,

Trying to safely link a Multiplus 48/5000 to a Mason Seplos 16kwh 48v battery via a Lynx Distributor…

Multiplus manaul says 70mm2 DC cable, but the Mason says 50mm2

Seems best to go with the larger, so 70mm2 from Multiplus to Lynx, then 79mm2 again from Multiplus to Mason right?

Only issue is the Mason DC terminal can only accept max cable gauge of 50mm2!

So now I’m going round in circles on what to do.

(1m runs from Multiplus to Lynx, and another 1m from Lynx to Mason)

Any advice much appreciated
