Sighted in at 100m. Groups suck because of crazy wind (yeah, right, it's just me). Just wanted to post my new gun.
Old Tikka T3 .223Rem in an MDT HS3 chassis I traded some ammo for. Scope is some cheap garbage I got for free, didn't lose 0 after 40 shots, but will definitely get something a little nicer in a few months. Only drawback is that the previous owner had the barrel shortened to 16". Roast away!
(The wind really is crazy in Finland at the moment, but should still group tighter than this at 100m.)
Just finished my legit first build and got to take it out for the first time over Memorial Day. Zeroed at 100 then went out to 400 without issue which isn't much but felt good for just putting the rifle together. Ended up with a 22in 6.5, build list below. Previously hunted/shot a .308 t3x.
My only experience really shooting at range is during deer season or .22 at much closer distances. Found out pretty quickly that my optic, my older mark 3hd, is my weak link. In retrospect I probably should have gotten an optic first and built the rifle second but here we are. Glass is foggy at high mag, no zero stops, basic + reticle, shit turrets, limited zoom etc.
Looking for recommendations in the $3kish and under range for an optic that will do everything I need. I am familiar with the steadfast options such as the Atacr, nx8 or Razor gen 3 but does anyone have any smaller or more niche brands I can check out? Would like to try something less common if you've enjoyed it. New or previously loved, doesn't matter. Will have the option to shoot out to 1200 yd plus.

First time gun owner here. My goal is basically to have a fun hobby of range shooting/target shooting. I bought a Savage Mark II - FVXP from Bass Pro Shop in Bolingbrook. The whole ordering and pickup process was super smooth and quick.
From my research, the factory stock is often the worst part, so I got the MDT field chassis (along with an amazon bipod).
I was originally looking at more expensive options (Tikka t1x, CZ 457 Varmint, Ruger Precision Rimfire) but at the end of the day this setup made more sense for my budget and planned usage frequency. I watched hours of videos and a lot of people really like the Mark II. Also the longest public range around me (Chicago) seems to be 100 yards, so this will do the job just fine.
Oddly enough, I just sold a pool cue for about $800, so it basically bought me this setup. (Pool cues being my true stupid obsession).
We'll see how this gun journey goes, but I know i got a ton of helpful info from this sub!

I just purchased a MDT LSS Chassis for my Tikka T3x lite D-18 .223 REM This is a rifle that came with a TrueTimber VSX Camo Stock. It has a 22” Thick Fluted Barrel. That’s what the D-18 stands for. Made as a special edition for Cabela’s. I have only had it for a little less than a year so have only used it at the range but plan on using it for possibly for coyote hunting. My question is I bought weights for the forearm and what is the proper positioning of the weights for balance ? Do I want it equal weight distribution from the front and rear of the rifle or do I want it more front heavy ? There’s not a lot of recoil with a .223 but what is best for target shooting ?
