Unexpected music discoveries

I had one today. For a few years I've been listening through the catalog of different artists. I decided that after the 400th artist (Jenna Raine) I'd start going through the list, and relistening to an album from most of the artists.

I started with the top with Absolutely (RAYE's sister Abby Keane) and relistened to her 2026 album, then when I got to the 2nd artist on the list, Achillea whose last album had been from 2006, I saw that they had two 2026 albums that I'd missed. Two albums after a 20-year gap that I might never have been aware of without doing this. And this is only with the 2nd artist out of 400.

I look through the list of new albums on Apple Music each week, and it shows me a lot of albums, but there are a lot it doesn't show also.

Anyway that's my unexpected music discovery. What unexpected music discoveries have you made?

Best possible Canadian Music concert: Allison Russell & Sarah McLachlan

I got to see the best possible (IMO of course) Canadian music concert earlier in the month: Allison Russell opening for Sarah McLachlan. I took this photo from the part of Sarah's set when she brought Allison and crew onstage.

FWIW My top 3 Canadian musicians are Russell, McLachlan, and Loreena McKennitt. #4 is the very underrated Alessia Cara.

Any other fans of the music I like?

Consumer Reports earbud ratings are out

Consumer Reports earbud ratings are in the September-October 2026 issue

Only 3 buds got their top rating for both sound quality and noise reduction:
Sony WF-1000XM6/B
Sony WF-1000XM5
Status Audio Pro X

I was surprised to see the top noise reduction rating for the Pixel Buds 2a & Pro 2, because I have Pixel Buds Pro 2, and it's the bud I wear most of the time. Except when I need strong ANC.

Ratings for each category range from a double down arrow to a double up arrow. There are only 5 levels from worse to better.

RAXE290 Nighthawk router: wired connection has internet, wireless connections don't.

Router status says it has internet, and the PC connected to it via ethernet cable does.

Android phones & ipad all can connect, but say no internet. It was all working a couple of days ago. Used the router for years I think, and haven't changed anything.

I have power-cycled it. Even swapped it out for older router briefly. I have not done a hard reset, though I guess I would before scrapping it.

Anything I should check or try, short of a hard reset?

Today's musical Irony from Olivia O'Brien's new album

Olivia's new album Pixie was my favorite release of today (and I think it was a great new music day), but the song Written By a Man, was actually written by a man.

Olivia was the 3rd listed writer, and the second was also a woman. But the first listed writer was a man.

I don't know whether to be amused or disappointed. The song was good, so I'll go with amused.

Edited to add: I was wrong. I thought writers were listed in order of contribution, but it seems to be alphabetical so apparently it was mostly written by women.

IRMAA. Not sure if I can appeal on retirement due to AGI for the year.

I just started Medicare, and I have an IRMAA bill equal to my part B bill. Based on AGI from 2024. I don't work anymore, and my income has dropped. I thought that was a life-changing event that I could use to appeal.

But from a quick look at SSA-44 it appears that my AGI for the year will keep me in IRMAA, due to capital gains from earlier in the year (well before retiring and applying/qualifying for Medicare). I didn't go deep in and may have missed something.

Income is less now due to retirement, but it isn't clear I can appeal IRMAA. And next year when my AGI will be much less, I won't have a life changing event to appeal then?

I must be missing something. If I can't appeal it now, can't I do it next year, when my AGI will drop a lot.

Ama's self-titled album just dropped. Give it a listen.

Today is a lighter than usual Friday for new music releases, but there were a couple of RnB albums.

I listened to Mare's new album Becoming first, and liked it well enough, but it was Ama's self-titled album that hit just right. Still playing, but this one is gonna get more listens.

Ama isn't the easiest name to search on Reddit, but I did find another mention of this album here.

Inkpot Gods is unputdownable (Alchemical Journeys book 4)

Seanan McGuire's new Alchemical Journeys book. Are you reading it?

The first book seems well-loved here, but not everybody seems to love all the subsequent books as much as I do. Even if you stopped the series at some point, give this one a look.

Is your Replay All Time (100 song playlist) hopelessly out of date?

My Replay All Time list is out of date. Seems like it hasn't updated in over a year.

Is it some old feature they did, and then forgot to keep current? Most of my Replay stuff makes sense, and for all I know could be correct, but not that.
