Instagram officially killed End-to-End Encryption in DMs yesterday. Are we all just okay with Meta reading our chats now?

I feel like this is flying completely under the radar. As of yesterday, Instagram fully removed the E2EE option for direct messages.

They claim it’s due to "low usage," but the reality is that Meta now has the technical ability to scan, read, and flag any text, photo, or voice note sent in DMs. Coming right before the Take It Down Act goes into effect in the US, the timing seems super intentional.

Are you guys just moving your private conversations back to WhatsApp/Signal, or is there an actual alternative right now that doesn't just feed your metadata to another centralized server? I'm honestly tired of jumping between apps every time a massive tech company changes its privacy policy.

What is everyone planning to use for actual private messaging this year?

Beyond E2EE: Implementing Mixnet Routing and Post-Quantum Hardening in a Live Messenger

Hey everyone,
We just pushed the launch of Mutate. While most dApps focus on the ledger, we wanted to focus on the transport layer of communication.

The Architecture:

Transport: We’re using a mixnet-style path to reduce sender/receiver visibility at any single relay point.

Crypto: X3DH for sessions + Kyber-1024 for post-quantum resistance.

Identity: A hidden anchor with public-facing, disposable Sub-profiles.

We are live at https://mutate.tools/ . We’re looking for a technical critique of this stack. Specifically: how would you improve the sub-profile routing to further decouple the identity layer from the transport layer?

Looking forward to a deep dive in the comments.

Hey everyone, I'm working with the team at Mutate. We're trying to tackle the metadata surveillance issue in decentralized messaging. E2E encryption is standard now, but the transport pattern (your social graph) is usually still completely visible to observers.

A quick note on onboarding: Just to be completely transparent for anyone who wants to test the client—the current beta does require an email address. We are actively working toward a purely wallet-based login, but we want to stress-test the routing and cryptographic layers first.

Here is a quick look at our current stack:

Identity: A hidden account anchor with public-facing, disposable Sub-profiles.

Transport: Layered, mixnet-style routing to reduce visibility at any single relay point.

Cryptography: X3DH for session setup and Kyber-1024 for post-quantum hardening.

I’m looking for Web3 devs and enthusiasts to poke holes in this architecture. Are we overcomplicating the transport layer? Are there better ways to handle the sub-profile routing?

You can check out the whitepaper and test the beta here https://mutate.tools/

Would love to hear your honest thoughts and critiques

Hey everyone, my team and I are building Mutate. It’s a decentralized messaging app, but instead of just stopping at standard end-to-end encryption, we're trying to solve the metadata problem protecting who you talk to, when, and how often.

Full transparency upfront before you click: Right now, the beta does require an email address to sign up. Our ultimate goal is to move to a purely wallet-based/anonymous login, but we are still in the early stages and aren't there quite yet. I just want to be 100% honest about that limitation so I don't waste anyone's time
What we do have working right now:

- Mixnet-style routing: To obscure sender/receiver patterns.

- Sub-profiles: You can create mathematically unlinked identities inside one app (so your work life and Web3 life don't cross-contaminate).

- Kyber-1024: Post-quantum encryption.

We are looking for early beta testers to give us completely unfiltered, honest feedback on the UX and the overall architecture. Tell us what's confusing, what you like, and what we need to fix.

You can test it out here: https://mutate.tools/

I'll be hanging out in the comments to answer any questions. Thanks!

In theory, migration is straightforward. In practice, everything depends on maintaining:

● identical service behavior

● stable APIs

● no user impact

That’s where most migration strategies become complicated.

I’m pretty new to crypto and I always get nervous when someone asks to move to DMs to help with something. Even if it’s innocent, I keep thinking about how much metadata these apps collect. Like who I talk to, how often, when I’m active. One bad actor or leak and my whole activity could be mapped.

It makes me hesitant to ask for help sometimes. Does anyone else feel this way or am I overthinking it? It feels like one slip and my regular life and crypto life could connect because every messaging app wants to link your phone number or email to your account. How do you guys manage to stay compartmentalized without it becoming a full-time job? Is there a way to have a clean, decentralized chat identity that doesn't track patterns?

the whole ethereum community preaches decentralization and taking back control but then we coordinate everything through regular messaging apps run by big companies. it’s pretty hypocritical when you step back and look at it. anyone else notice this?

I use Monero because I actually care about financial privacy but then I have to message people about transactions on apps that leak everything. It feels stupid. The privacy stops the second I need to coordinate with someone. Anyone else see this contradiction in the space?
