Can I be sincere for a sec?

The Bill and Zoe segment on today’s pod was worth listening to. Yes, a lot of the stuff Zoe was talking about was ridiculous, but they have such a great relationship.

I loved when Zoe was talking about all these young people who accomplished things and Bill goes “you’re doing great. I’m so proud.” Then they spoke about the 21st birthday and drinking together and growing up.

So much of culture now, especially podcasts about sports like fun at things and are mean spirited. But Bill doesn’t really do that, he has his daughter on and they laugh together.

Idk, I’ve been listening and reading to Bill on and off for years. The humor has always been there, and the sincerity is there too

How many episodes are Jim and Pam shown (a) dating/married in person (b) happy/not in conflict?

Doing a rewatch of random episodes throughout the show. A thought I had. There doesn’t seem to be many episodes in which Jim and Pam are together and in a relationship and in person.

Think about it.

All of S1-s3 it’s the will they or won’t they. They finally start dating in season 4. Then in season 5 Pam goes to art school.

Then she comes back but then she is with the Michael Scott paper company.

Season 6 and season 7, I guess relatively?

But then you have the athlead drama and the weird video guy stuff in the latter 2 seasons. (Though full disclosure have not watched those in years bc I’m a Michael purist).

Any thoughts here?

Lateraling to Morgan Lewis or Seyfarth from Big4 employment firms?

Edit: since I guess wasn’t clear, places like Littler or fisher Philips

How soon in my career can I do this? I like employment law but obviously would love to do it at a higher salary + more prestigious cases and work. What steps can I take to do this as a junior? Is this attainable? Am I just being naive? Is it biz dev or are there certain types of work I should seek out?

Does the Pitt have a masculinity problem?

Sincerely interested in people's POV here. It feels like this show is incredibly sympathetic to men, but less interested in humanizing the women or having their stories/perspectives heard — especially women of color. Dr. Mel King being the only exception. And as much as I love Dr. Mel King, it makes me sad that the portrayal of autism in media is almost always a cis white women who's quirky.

Dr. Robby was practically punishing Dr. McKay for her fear of the teen incel boy. He was so nasty to Dr. Mohan, for having empathetic qualities we see celebrated in Dr. King. His decisions around reporting child abuse were not only factually incorrect (as many doctors and social workers said, he absolutely should have reported it), he was nasty about it. It's as if he doesn't conceive of the idea of women having hands-on experience with violence. He is abrasively mean to Dr. Gloria Underwood. I felt he was often misogynistic to Dr. Collins as well, but at least she had a fully-fleshed out and beautiful story with her miscarriage and abortion.

I thought this show was about a flawed doctor with misogyny as one of those flaws, but many don't seem to agree. Perhaps its unintentional?

And when we look at the storylines — which characters get redemption, which flaws deserve empathy, which characters do we care enough to renew every season, which are sidelined — it's telling that no white men have been "cycled out." Like, why is Kiarra replaced with a white man for season 2? Why are the women of color always "off for the day", but not Whittaker or Langon? It seems like there's a masculinity problem here. I think it's very possibly unconscious bias on behalf of the showrunners, but that doens't mean it's not present.

Edit: not totally sure of my goals. I came to law school wanting to do admin/regulatory stuff but that didn’t really pan out. I know I’d like to continue doing litigation, I’d love to obviously be a partner and make money, and I also love appellate work… (I know some of that might not be attainable but…)

I have been connected with a magistrate judge for a potential clerkship opportunity next fall (after 1 year of work). (i'm not going into details but was basically told, if I'm interested, it's there). It is not in SDNY/NDCA but in a ~ major ~ American city. my understanding is that the mag judge has a substantial criminal docket and takes the lead on employment cases.

I graduate law school this year. I'm satisfied with my job. It's a lower level Amlaw 100 speciality firm which I like, in a city I wanted and i'll be reunited with my partner after long distance. But I also really enjoy regulatory/admin law work. Also of note, the city of my job and clerkship are in different places.

I have above average grades from a T-30 (really turned it around after 1L fall), so i'm not sure an article III clerkship is in the cards.

But I think I'd love clerking. i did an internship with an article III judge and loved it. I loved the vibes, the research and the writing. very much a nerd in this way.

I'm also an older law student — think later 20s/early 30s.

So I'm asking:

  • Would you do the mag clerkship?
  • What should I view as the deciding factor in my decision?
  • Are mag judges really that looked down upon even though the work is substantively the same?
  • is there anyway I could pivot to doing the admin/regulatory work I wanted? Or would I have to do another clerkship?
  • Am I too old to clerk? Or rather, too old to clerk for the magistrate judge?

thanks for your help

1 edit: for timing of clerkship

It’s a history of regulation in the United States through biographies of different figures – Louis Brandeis, Alfred Kahn, and others.

Anyone read it? Have checked it out ur haven’t dove in yet because I’m wondering if it’s too academic
