Olympus AF-1: My $100 alternative to the Mju-II

Picked up an AF-1 for under $100 for for my wife. It has the same 35mm f/2.8 Zuiko lens as the Mju-II, a solid 80s build, and doesn't break the bank.

I put together a quick write-up with some sample scans if anyone’s considering one:

Why do I leave the Mamiya 645 at home when it's barely bigger than my 35mm?

Hey everyone, today it’s all about the Mamiya 645!

I finally forced myself to use it more often for some projects earlier this year and just finished writing down a long-term review with a gallery of my favorite shots. And yes it absolutely is an amazing camera that is still affordable, offers the medium format look, is not too bulky and therefore the best entry into shooting 120 film. Imho.
It’s kind of funny because the M645 isn't even that much bigger than a 35mm camera, but still does not get as much use. (Meanwhile I am thinking about a 6x7 camera - lol)

To those who own both formats: Do you also find yourself leaving the medium format camera at home most of the time?

Rescuing expired Kodak Ektachrome 64T

Hey everyone,

In January my Nikon F2 and the 28mm F/2.0 took a gamble on some 20-year expired Ektachrome 64T during a trip to Venice. Between the tungsten balance and two decades of aging, the raw scans came back as just as purple and blue as expected.

So can you "fix" the expired as well as the tungsten white balance in post?

Yes, but the "Auto" white balance was completely useless so I had to do some manual histogram surgery per color channel.

I'm honestly super happy with how they turned out. It was a bit of work per frame, but I love the look i got from this emulsion.

What do you think?

Do you usually keep the shifted expired colors for the vibe, or do you try to  correct them?

(PS: I wrote down my exact curve settings and a step-by-step breakdown on my blog if anyone is fighting a similar E-6 batch and wants to see my approach)

I’ve been shooting both the F and F2 lately and honestly, I can’t pick a favorite. They are just too different!

I wrote down a quick comparison focusing on why they serve different purposes for me. One for the swagger, one for the work.

What are your thoughts on it: Do you also think one needs both or have you settled on one?

After the discussion we had about the Nikon F last time, I finally finished a deep dive into its successor: the Nikon F2.

Bit of a personal one for me. Looking back at my work, I realised a lot of my favourite shots were actually taken on this camera. If the Nikon F is like an old, raw Jeep, the F2 feels more like a 70s sports car that’s been tightened up in all the right places to me. Still mechanical, still heavy, still no nonsense — just smoother and more usable in real shooting.

I spent the last couple of weeks putting everything I know about it into one place i hope you enjoy it.

Covered stuff like:

  • the 10-second mechanical trick for long exposures without a cable
  • my favorite Nikkor lens setup (28 / 35 / 50 / 105)
  • what I check when buying one today (prism rot, seals, all that stuff)
  • and a few repair/resources that keep these things going (Sover Wong, etc.)
  • Old Ads, Manuals and brochures

Full write-up + sample shots in comments!

Curious what you think — do you prefer feel of the F, the more refined F2, or did you go straight to the F3 and never look back? (never tried the F3)

Always interested how other people are actually shooting these!
