Olympus AF-1: My $100 alternative to the Mju-II

Picked up an AF-1 for under $100 for for my wife. It has the same 35mm f/2.8 Zuiko lens as the Mju-II, a solid 80s build, and doesn't break the bank.

I put together a quick write-up with some sample scans if anyone’s considering one:

What's your favorite budget point-and-shoot right now?

Not in love with my new OM-2N

I recently purchased an Olympus OM-2N back in April, and have since then shot around 10-ish rolls.

I bought it to replace my Yashica FX-103, which I had been using for many years since my dad got it for my photo class in high school. I knew it wasn’t “high end” but I adored it. Specifically the LED metering system inside, the light weight, and the super smooth lever advancing.

But back in march it started giving me issues with the shutter and mirror sticking, and after taking it to my local camera store (and former workplace) I determined it would be more expensive to fix it than to get a new camera.

So I decided to treat myself and “upgrade” to a beloved and reliable camera. I specifically chose the Olympus because of the large bright viewfinder, which was an incredible step up from the Yashica’s.

But as much as I love the viewfinder image, the metering has been really hard to get used to. The FX-103 has AE, but I hardly ever used it, opting for manually exposing with the LED metering. But I struggle with using the needle/stick metering system, as it only shows my shutter speed in the viewfinder in AE mode. And as someone who shoots in lowlight pretty often, I struggled to use the needle or read my shutter speed in in darker environments, and have usually been defaulting to AE with my OM2n, and as a result I’ve been much less consistent and happy with my exposures and photos.

Also, total nitpick, but the advancing lever feels very sluggish compared to what I’m used to.

I guess my question is: has anyone else felt this way about the OM models? Does anyone share the same love for those Yashicas (it’s so much harder to find detailed info on their SLR’s)?

Would anyone have any recommendations for a camera that has great viewfinder, but also feels a little more modern in its construction and metering system? I have been thinking about an OM-4TI, but those are a little pricey…

Flash Suggestions

I have the Canon EOS Rebel 1000. It came with this flash but it doesn’t seem to be working. It makes tone, but no lights come on and it won’t let me press the shutter button. I am gonna try to get a different one. Do I have to get a Canon one specifically? Can I get a cheaper flash? I don’t know what kind of hot shoe pin layout I need. I literally know NOTHING about external flashes. Please help!

Fixed 1960 camera but

I bought this cam the other day for 30 euros it’s from 1960 and I finally fixed it the shutter was stuck my question is I tried getting to the lens from the back and unscrewed these two screws that it’s basically impossible now to put back on this little small metal circular thing I was wondering if I can js remove it or if it’s something important like a seal to not ruin the film

Hey guys, just joined: I inherited a Mamiya RB 67. Is this a cool camera and do they still make film for it?

It was from my late father in law, and it seems to be in working order

Advice on Soviet film cameras?

Hello! I am not particularly engaged in the camera world, but my girlfriend enjoys collecting film cameras. She mentioned that she would really like a vintage Soviet camera, though she didn’t mention any specific one. I figured this could make a good birthday present, but I need y’all’s help. Do you have any suggestions on a specific camera?

Thanks in advance!

Ps. Is this too easy to get wrong that I should choose a different gift?

Battery for a Canon XT Manual 35mm Camera

Ive got a quesiton I didn’t find weird until now. I’ve recently gotten gifted an older Canon XT Manual 35mm Camera gifted to me from my Grandpa, and he’s had it for 30-50 years from what I’ve gathered. However, one both the Canon Website, USA version, Amazon, Google, BHA, I can’t find specs on a battery, the old lithium-ion batteries they used that were small and ciruclar. Now they use these still to this day in plenty of things, yet weirdly I can’t find any specific kind of battery or name for it to even look near me or online. Any idea, advice, etc.?

Canon T50 Repair?

Hello I was recently gifted this Canon T50 by a family member and it has clearly gone untouched for many many years. Obviously there is some significant corrosion and the battery appears to be totally melded into the slot. My family member explained he tried a few things to get the AA battery out but to no avail. The lens seems to be in nice shape and I plan on using it on my AE-1 at least. Essentially I have come to seek advice on if it’s even worth the attempt at using some kind of neutralizing agent to try and worm the battery out or if it appears to be a lost cause. I know these are relatively cheap and nothing “special” but it was an extremely kind gesture from my grandfather and if possible I would like to fix this up to use and preserve. I am relatively new to film photography and cameras as a whole so thank you in advance to anyone who might spare some knowledge or tips if you’ve been in this situation.

I wanted to get a good camera with nostalgic vibes, and I was thinking of going with film.

But I don’t wanna buy an actual film camera cause there are no film developing studios near me nor do I have time and patience.

I was looking forward to Flashback V2 and The One Street camera.

Can someone help me out?

Rollei 35 vs 35s

I recently got a Rollei 35 (got it on Ebay for 100EUR) and just shot my first roll with it. Waiting for it to come back. I really liked the experience and might want to either 1. get it CLAed, 2. get a better/newer/mint copy, or 3. upgrade to 35S. What would you recommend?

Is the Rollei 35S actually worth the premium if we zone focus anyway?

From what I've read the Tessar is razor sharp from f/5.6, and the Sonnar's advantage is mostly wide open, which is exactly where I can't guess distance well enough to use it.

Is there anything you notice at f/8 and beyond between? I know the Sonnar is multicoated and the Tessar isn't, so I'd expect better flare resistance shooting into the light. Corner falloff too. Is that enough to justify a few hundred euros more, or is it a stop I'd be paying for and never using?

Curious to hear from people who switched and either kept it or went back.

Advice for buying first film camera as a complete beginner.

Hello everyone,

I have very recently gotten into photography and would like to buy a camera, specifically a Minolta X-700.

I had some questions I wanted to ask, and maybe to ask for your experiences with said camera if you have any. If it helps any, I would be using the X-700 and probably something like a Canon DSLR interchangeably (the X-700 for more meaningful moments like special events and the DSLR for everyday snap-and-go type of things).

Questions:
What would be around a good price range for the X-700 and where could I be able to find one to purchase without it being a gamble like on eBay.

What should I look out for as green/red flags when looking at listings for the X-700?

What lenses do you recommend? What accessories do you recommend?

What would be the best way to find an X-700 in the best condition possible?

Please let me know of your experience with this camera.

Thank you.
