Why is Pervasive Developmental Disorder an automatic autism diagnosis?
CW: ABA therapy
Hey all, quick question for those familiar with the DSM IV. I (24F) was diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS) when I was 2 years old due to rarely speaking and repetitive movements (spinning, flapping hands). After watching old childhood videos of myself as a toddler, I definitely recognize a lot of stereotypically autistic traits.
At age 3, I started ABA therapy. I don't remember much of it on account of my age, but it helped tremendously with my speaking ability, and I am now fully verbal. I was able to attend school without any sort of special education assistance, and I wasn't told about my diagnosis until I was 15. I was (and still am) a bit socially awkward, but I had real, close friends and was capable of following a conversation. I did well in school up through high school, and participated in lots of sports, clubs, and work after school.
Nowadays I am capable of living by myself (I struggle with keeping it clean and making food, but don't we all) and have a full time job. I'll even be going back to college to get my degree. I have had my driver's license for 6 years, and I have a boyfriend who I love a whole lot. To me, none of these things indicate that I meet diagnostic criteria for ASD, as I'm not experiencing any sort of impairment (at least, I don't think I am)
I struggle with eye contact and have other unrelated mental health issues, but do I really have autism? I guess I'm just a little confused on how that's possible.
TL;DR - got diagnosed with PDD-NOS at a young age, now not experiencing notable social or sensory difficulties. Not sure how I can still be diagnosed with autism.
