What are historical misconception or scientific hypothesis that are so cool you wish they were true?

For example, the medical concept of humours, which regulated a persons temperament and were tied to certain fluids in the body, or phlogiston, a substance that existed in objects and made them more likely to burn, which was disproved when it was determined that burning objects gained mass.

These theories were all, of course, eventually disproven, but how cool would it be if radio waves and light actually traveled through an omnipresent substance?

What other theories do you think would be cool if they were real, and how would they change the world today?

Confluence Help for TTRPG

First Post on the sub.

I'm not quite sure if this is allowed here, but i'd like to ask for help on making confluence essences for some combinations.

Recently, I was thinking about running a DnD campaign in the Pallimustus setting, but after talking to one of my players, i've realized that some parts of the power system are going to be harder than expected.

For example, one of my players suggest Eye + Light + Tentacle for his essences and i'm completely floored on what that would produce. I can't even think of a good idea for a fanmade confluence.

Are there any hard or soft rules for making Confluences? Maybe a statement on how heavily personality weighs into the confluence?

(EDIT: My planned plot for the campaign would go from Iron to low Bronze rank. I was planning to set it in a low-magic region like Greenstone, since I feel like that was the strongest part of the books.)

Immersive Dungeon Crawling: A Stupid Idea

Has anyone else considered the potential of building a dungeon with 3D terrain in their basement, putting a tiny remote car with a camera on it inside, then getting on a Skype or Zoom call with your party and having them see the Dungeon through the Cars camera?

Mage: The Ascension Question

As someone who's recently learned about Mage, and previously did not know anything about the setting, I have a question regarding Consensus.

I thought that the idea of magic being possible only if the average guy thinks its possible is very interesting, but what are the limits to this?

Would a child not tilt the scales as much, since children are often less sure of their knowledge?

Would acting like a stage magician and summoning a rabbit using reality-bending be dismissed by Consensus as "stage magic"?

If the only people viewing you were, say, cult members of conspiracy theorists who are not Awakened but deeply believe that what you are doing is possible, would that make magic easier?

EDIT: Just realized there is Mind Magic. Would that always be coincidental, since it only happens in peoples minds, and as long as you're not mentally shouting at them, they'll dismiss it as casual thoughts.

(JJK) Thought I had about Higuruma and Worm

Is it just me, or does Higuruma's sorcery awakening in the JJK anime seem a lot like a trigger event.

Sure, maybe it's not a moment of high stress, but it does seem sort of like the Monkey's Paw of most Parahuman's powers.

He awakens because of the court finding his client guilty on a retrial. Specifically, after his client was declared innocent, the client was later given a life sentence, despite the fact that the prosecution submitted no new evidence. When Higuruma saw his client staring at him like a previous client who had been jailed, he awakens his Technique.

His Technique places him in a Courtroom where he can enact justice by himself, but he can only ever be the prosecutor, and the person he accuses will not have a lawyer of their own, despite the fact that he became a lawyer so that he could make sure people were not falsely accused. However, his power specifically gives him cases where the evidence is inconclusive, just like the case that he awakened in.

It also forces him to give people retrials, when he was originally defeated in a case because of a retrial.

Thoughts?

Shower Though about the HORUS naming scheme

All manufacturers have a naming scheme. Harrison Armory names them after Kings and Generals, SSC gives their mechs butterfly and moth titles, IPS-N has pirate/privateers as their frame names, heck even RKF-developed models have their own flower naming scheme. Until recently, I though that HORUS have mechs named after mythological monsters, until someone told me that their thing is actually DND monsters, and a Lich is not a real legendary creature.

Knowing all this, I have on question: Why din't they name the "Goblin" Mind-Flayer instead?!

It literally puppets and controls things! Also, that sounds so much cooler!

A potential application for R Corp's cloning Singularity

Since The Head kills both the original and the clone when they exceed the 7 day limit, they could theoretically execute people by creating a clone of them in R Corps custody for 7 days, then wait for The Head to kill the original on the 8th day. As long as this wasn't spammed enough that The Head gets tired of you doing this and annihilates you, you could use it call out hits on targets that you didn't or couldn't deal with.

With this method, you could even take out a Colour Fixer if you had even a drop of blood to clone them from.

Just Finished Legends ZA-What was everyone doing in the ending?

Right before the final fight, the entirety of the main cast spends 10 full minutes of playtime reminding you how dangerous the tower is, then we decide to just "deal with this thing later", get surprised when it goes Rogue, then Taunie/Urbaine challenges us to a battle, WHILE the tower is going critical? Then she's all like, I WILL BE THE ONE TO SAVE THE CITY!

Right before this, we had Grisham's fight, where the game reminds us that wanting to be the one who saves the city for selfish reasons is not good, then we have Ms.Savior Complex show up and just say, "Nah, I know you won, and this is a perilous situation where the entire city might get blown to smithereens, but I want to do it myself!"

Holy Tonal Whiplash

Throughout the entire final sequence, the urgency of the situation is repeatedly undercut by the fact that we have time to call a meeting, build an obstacle course, and talk a bunch, while all around us Pokemon are supposedly in great pain.

I feel like the Story Team sort of phoned it in on this one, despite the fact that the rest of the game was pretty good.

You are Immortal, so long as a Horcrux or other item or being stays intact. What do you make you're magic core and where do you hide it.

Inspired by a discussion about how most of Voldemort (and other liches) phylactery choices are a bit silly. Why make all your items precious when that means other people will also want them. So, I would like to ask Reddit for their strategies on how to stay alive and secure.

Lets assume whatever object this is needs to be findable by you eventually, and does not become indestructible after you enchant.

During the Great Crusade, would the Emperor have spared a Human Civilization that surrendered immediately? What about a Xenos species?

During the Great Crusade, there were a bunch of other Human Civilizations, like the Black Judges that had been raiding Olympia, the Interex or the Pale King Emperor that Jaghatai may have destroyed. In the canon, all of them saw the Imperium and rightfully said:"Hell nah", though most of them weren't much better.

If any of them submitted to the Imperium, renounced religion, and let the Emperor rule them, would they be allowed to exist and escape genocide, or even receive a Olympus Mons deal like the Mechanicum got?

MAG 200 Question: What happened to Avatars in charge of domains?

Some context: finished the series few years ago, forgot most of it, and started listening to it again out of order. Just relistened to 200 and got to the part where the girls discuss Jon and Martin leaving, and they mention Simon Fairchild being depowered and taken out by vengeful, tramautized domain victims.

So my questions is: How?

Firstly, wasn't Simon 100 or more years old? How did he not crumble to dust the second The Vast left?

Second, Does everyone worldwide who was in a domain remember their time there? Does this mean the whole world is filled with PTSD sufferers now?

Third, How do ordinary people know Simon was the ruler of the domain? All he did is rocket out of the sky every so often. There's no way anyone saw him when they were too busy being chased by The Great Beast, unless he taunted his victims personally offscreen.

So does everybody, including average joes, know exactly who was torturing them now, or is it other people involved with Entities settling old debts with Simon Fairchild over avatar fights?

Because I can imagine that a whole bunch of the surviving avatars could take out Simon Fairchild, or even Jon, in a straight fight without powers.

Does this mean that every domain lord that was an actual human is getting ripped to pieces in the background?

Lastly, won't new entities just respawn? There's still people being scared, so eventually they'll reform from the consciuosness of everything on earth, even if it takes millions of years.

Pretty much what the title says, give a trigger event to a famous person, drawing from their actual life.

This person can be from any time period and any place.

This can be basing a character off them or turning a real-life event into a trigger, like Hitler triggering as a Shaker from nearly-dying to a grenade during the war, or Beethoven having a thinker power from stress caused by going deaf.

P.S: Bonus points for making an appropriate power for a certain blond politician...
