Meaning of Wolf Edmunds’ name

\>!Spoiler Ahead!<

\>!At the end of Interstellar, it turns out that Wolf Edmunds’ planet was the one able to support life all along even though Edmunds himself is long dead. We see Dr Brand setting up camp on the planet and Cooper flying to Edmunds’ planet to support her. It is implied that this is the planet where humanity will move to and start afresh. It’s worth remembering that the mission Edmunds went on was called the Lazarus mission!<

Theory:
According to legend, King Edmund or Edmund the Martyr was killed quite gruesomely by Vikings in the east of England and his head cut off and thrown into the woods. After much searching, his followers hear a sound going “here here here” and come to find Edmund’s head being guarded by a wolf and it was the wolf that guided them to him. When reuinited with the body, the head reattached and his wounds had all healed. His shrine became a common pilgrimage for people to them travel to

Back to the movie, could the symbology here be that Wolf was “guarding Edmund’s planet” so that when humanity arrived, it could flourish once more and effectively be reborn? Once established, humanity would keep making the “pilgrimage” to it in order to stay alive

Would anyone want a newsletter that explains how cities actually work?

Hi all - I’ve started a newsletter where I write a weekly deep dive on one hyper niche topic about cities/architecture and just the weird and interesting ways about how cities work.

I’m an architect and I’ve learnt just how connected it is to everything and felt it was the right way to share the curiosity.

Past topics:
-How hospital HVACs can get hacked in the age of AI
-How home insurance proves climate change
-How a centuries old law is worsening Lisbon’s housing shortage
-How deepfake videos of cities are selling a pipe dream

I promise you don’t need to be an architect to understand it so if you would love to support a growing publication, you can find it here :)

What is wrong with architecture media?

I am becoming increasingly fed up with how reductive architecture media is now.

Everything is only about starchitects and pretty pictures and any good stories or analysis about buildings are normally in other non archi outlets like the FT and The Atlantic.

There is just a real void in terms of serious analysis that isn’t just for practitioners but also that goes outside europe and north america.

Would be interested to know if others feel the same way.

I made a newsletter for curious archi students

Hi folks,

I am a UK architect and have been getting quite fed up of how traditional architecture media never truly investigates deeper topics like the benefits of pedestrianisation or public transport - especially not in a way that non specialists can understand.

Traditional media outlets I find just dumb everything down to pretty pictures and famous names.

I am trying to combat this head on by writing an independent newsletter that does weekly deep dives into these sorts of wider topics but in an accessible way.

I’ve written about topics like AI slop “predicting” so called urban utopias and how home insurance is an indicator of climate change.

It’s called The Meridian and I am trying to grow it so if you find our work interesting- you can read and find it here :)

How to build an interactive and searchable database for a website

Hi folks, I would like to use airtable to make a searchable online database that I can host on my website.

It’s a database of student finance and scholarships that I want people to be able to search. I want it to be interactive that only shows the relevant results based on the answers that a user inputs (education level, region etc).

Needless to say, i don’t want someone to be able to take all the data as they would be able if say the info was embedded as a html for example

I am completely new to airtable and tech product building as a whole. Any recommendations?

Does anyone know of any architecture firms in singapore that are willing to sponsor international (british qualified) architects?

Part of me thinks the need for sponsorship is off putting to an employer, it definitely is here in the uk, but idk the Singapore context.

If you know any names then do lmk :)

How to approach magazines/publications

Hi all, I have just started an independent niche architecture publication and was looking to pitch it for coverage to other magazines.

You regularly see established magazines talking about new upstart publications so I thought it may be worth a shot.

Any tips on how to approach them?

How can you join with a background in architecture?

Is it possible to join the urban development team (sectors dept 2) with a background in architecture and urban design?

I am a uk qualified architect with just under 5 years of experience and have been looking to move to Asia for a while.

I have both academic and professional experience in urban design and I lead the delivery of architecture projects but I am not sure how to position a pivot into ADB.

Any advice would be welcome.

A newsletter that gives architecture students the bigger picture

Hi folks

For the longest time I felt that architecture media only talked about pretty pictures and cool shapes (dezeen, archdaily, archiboom you name it).

No one really explored how architecture is connected to history, politics, finance, power and so I decided to start a newsletter to do just that.

It’s called The Meridian and it’s completely free:

https://decolonisearchitecture.com/the-meridian

Every week I send out a deep dive into topics from around the world that mainstream media doesn’t cover. Past topics have included:
- the link between climate change and home insurance
- the black market for water in jordan
- how street theatre is disappearing in Kashmir

It comes out every tuesday :)
Even if you have never studied architecture, we write it in a way that is simple and accessible to everyone. You can check out our past issues on the link.

Do sign up and tell your friends/tutor/parents/dog/dog’s parents/zhang et al

An architecture newsletter that gives the big picture

I’ve been getting increasingly frustrated with how architecture media (think Dezeen) often reduces buildings to aesthetics, renders, and “lookbook” projects, while ignoring the systems that actually shape the built environment.

So I started a small weekly publication called The Meridian that looks at architecture through politics, infrastructure, labour, climate, finance, media, and technology. It’s less “building review,” more “why does the world get built this way?”

Some recent pieces have explored:
- how climate change is reshaping home insurance markets
- street theatre and public space in Kashmir
- water infrastructure and geopolitics in Jordan
- the rise of AI-generated construction timelapses and synthetic architecture media

The goal isn’t really to cover architecture as an isolated discipline, but as something entangled with economics, culture, and power.

Curious whether this kind of architectural writing resonates with people here, because it feels like there’s a gap between academic theory and glossy architecture media right now.

If anyone’s interested, the essays are here and you can sign up for the weekly email:

Any cargo collective sites that aren’t portfolios?

I am using Cargo Collective to build a website for a non profit media startup and would like to look at some precedents to see what can actually be done with the website. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I ask because all of the templates and other sites I can find are all portfolio websites which are all image heavy and don’t have a lot of text or “conventional” website elements (i’m new to this).

I know cargo is meant for portfolios but it would be helpful to see if someone knows any other variations. Thank you :)

ELI5: What does decolonising mean?

I have seen this word a lot and I vaguely get what it means and I get why people use it but more often than not I have to go through tonnes of academic literature in order understand it.

In the context that i’ve seen people use it, I can see why they want to use it but it’s always explained in an inaccessible way.

*edit: I mean in contexts where people use it like “decolonise science”. Not literal removing of colonial empires.

What does it mean to you?

Hi guys, I’ve started a weekly newsletter that covers quite an underreported niche about architecture and constructions connections to the world of politics/culture/geography etc. Think the new yorker and the economist for architecture

My current format is as follows:

1x researched 1500 word deep dive on a niche topic (last week was the impact of AI construction timelapses)

3x links to sources for related information to the topic (a video, a pod and an article)

4-5x links to other developments in urban design/construction etc stories from around the world.

There just isn’t enough reporting on this frequently enough to make a sizeable weekly newsletter and a lot of it requires original research and writing. Personally I am not convinced that a short, summary based newsletter is right for this area but open to being told otherwise.

What is your opinion on this weekly deep dive format?
Do you subscribe to any weekly deep dive newsletters that I could learn from?
