I intentionally figured out how to print a tight mesh using PETG (or PLA)

This is a response to this deleted thread from yesterday:

https://www.reddit.com/r/3Dprinting/comments/1vraiq4/i_accidentally_figured_out_how_to_print_a_tight/

I had some ideas about what OP did there, and reading through that thread I got some more ideas. I'm fortunate to have a small print farm, so I just iterated through several variables until I ended up finding something that works. Here's the secret sauce. I don't want money. I'm not going to ask for patreon. I'm not going to act like I just cured cancer.

Use spiral vase mode combined with a tall layer height and a line width just barely larger than the layer height.

E.G.

Insert a cylinder into Orca

Turn on vase mode

Set your layer height to 0.28

Set your line width to 0.30

Set 0 bottom layers

Boom. Done.

I can share a 3MF if people really want, but it's so simple I'm not sure that's necessary. Feel free to iterate and improve on this discovery. I didn't do anything special

EDIT: Makerworld 3MF because someone asked.

Bambu slicer would not play nicely with my imported 3MF from Orca, so I had to quickly redo all the settings. Please let me know if I messed anything up or if it doesn't work from this file. I've tested it successfully on 2 Centuri Carbons, and a Creator 5 pro

EDIT 2: I received this DM from the original deleted thread author. I think they can't post here due to karma. I will share it unedited. Don't cyberbully. It's not cool. Be better.

>Hey man I’d like to clarify some things because it seems that there’s still some misunderstanding about what happened yesterday.

>I want to be clear that there was no attempt to monetize the mesh that I created by accident. Coming as a person who just got their printer a month ago, I accidentally created the mesh and posted it to reddit and asked if anyone would make use of it if I researched it a bit more.

>I’m not an expert in this space, so I wanted to figure out exactly how it worked because it was an interesting repeating pattern for me.

>After being bashed in the comments and accused of things saying I was gatekeeping/monetizing, I was upset because I didn’t even expect the post to get that sort of attention. I was assuming that i’d either get comments saying it’s useless and/or already been done so don’t bother looking further into it, or that’s cool post the write up.

>Once the downvotes started rolling in i realized I guess I should have just looked into it before posting from the get go. My initial reason for posting was because it was an accidental failed print, that looked interesting.

>About an hour later I tried to post my rushed write up because like I said i’m not an expert, so I was doing the best with the knowledge I have. Upon trying to post, I wasn’t able to because the mass downvoting made my account unable to interact in the sub. This also made it so I couldn’t reply to comments, leading people to think I was disappearing with my discovery.

>I ended up getting the write up posted on an alt account, which included print files and settings, but I guess people were still upset, because it got downvoted a bunch and the only comments were calling me delusional.

>9:21 AM

>Due to that I just ended up deleting the post because I was just getting bashed on it, and I wanted to stop the flood of negative notifications.

EDIT 3: OOP has shared their results as well. I'll include them. I'm working today, so I won't be able to play around with their settings or test this until probably tomorrow. Still, I think it's helpful to compare and contrast results. I had a nice chat with them, and explained how we value open collaboration in this hobby. They were cordial. Once again for those in the back, don't bully. OOP had a bad day and they're sorry. Let's bring them back into the fold.

I love this machine!

I went to a Mardi Gras themed party over the weekend. I love dinosaurs because they're awesome. I was able to make my own mask and I think it turned out great. PETG, 0.12 layer height, PLA supports with 0mm spacing. This took 37 hours. Other than the prime tower failing about 75% of the way in it was a flawless print.

Solarman data logger - help understanding data

I built my first off grid array. Eco-worthy (SNRE rebrand) 5kw off grid inverter. 5kwh battery. 2.4kw of panels. I'm having a hard time understanding the numbers I'm seeing from the included data logger though. I have the inverter set to only charge the battery from solar, and the output set to inverter first. However, in the statistics, my "from grid" is always higher than my consumption for the day. I would expect it to be lower since it is charging and discharging the battery daily (which I have verified through the BMS)

https://preview.redd.it/54jxbxdcejhh1.png?width=1130&format=png&auto=webp&s=6d0f26446e6da69c5a7c547f4f4d592aa7316295

This is from a time before sunrise when the battery is at the minimum voltage. It has been holding steady at 9% for hours as expected. Why is my grid draw significantly higher than my consumption? It's not charging the battery since that hasn't been rising. Is it just really bad at rounding? Could I have some setting incorrect?

https://preview.redd.it/ssg3stw1fjhh1.png?width=1016&format=png&auto=webp&s=ab584a6487624277b57f8c9ffae182205d5b9f9c

Edit: Another screenshot now that the sun is up and it's making power. The power flowing into the battery and power generated are close enough that I could accept it as a rounding error. I would expect the grid power to match my consumption though. It's 40% higher.

Also, in the app the grid consumption shows as a positive number, not a negative

What are y'all using your C5 coupon package for?

My C5 pro finally arrived and I have the discount coupons they promised for the delay. Looking at their store, there aren't a lot of things that interest me. They don't have any C5 accessories yet. Their PLA/PETG is priced higher than I pay on Ali even after the coupon and multispool discounts. ABS is slightly cheaper, but they only have like 3 colors in stock. Their engineering filaments don't offer quantity discounts.

Overall, there's nothing they're offering that seems especially enticing to me. I'll take my free $40 of course for something, but I'm not sure the $30 off $100 ones are worthwhile. Is there a good deal out there that I'm just not seeing?

It finally arrived!

My Creator 5 pro ordered on April 22nd finally came. 20 hours of print time so far and everything is working as it should. I have a U1 also and this seems to do slightly faster tool changes. Very happy with it so far and excited to have a machine with a chamber heater now.

I did not do air shipping, but it did ship via UPS worldwide express from Hong Kong. I didn't get any notification it was on the way from Flashforge until the day it was delivered. I just happened to check UPS my choice and saw I had a package en route. If you ordered around the same time as me, take a look.

My take on a super glue squeezer

Most of the "control" style super glue bottles (like Loctite's) are really just a regular 3g tube inside a plastic squeezer. The tube isn't anything special, you just get a nicer way to dispense it.

I looked at a bunch of similar models before making this one, but they all seemed to have one or more compromises. Most only supported part of the tube, so they felt flimsy when squeezing. Others were so narrow they'd tip over if you set them on the bench. And almost all of them had to be reprinted every time the glue ran out.

This design fully encloses the tube, has a wide, stable base so it stands up on its own, and uses a tiny printed interface disc between the squeezer and the glue tube. That disc takes about 3 minutes to print and is the only part that needs replacing when you swap in a new tube. Everything else gets reused. The squeeze button is also slightly recessed, so it's less likely to get bumped and accidentally squirt glue everywhere.

It makes those cheap little tubes much more comfortable to use, and I think it feels surprisingly close to the commercial control bottles.

Cat car console protector

My cat likes to lay right on the center console of my car (2022 Mustang Mach E) when he's riding with us. This poses a problem, as his favorite spot is right where the hazards, parking sensor button, and parking brake lever are. Thankfully the car is smart enough to not let anything bad happen when he pushes them while driving, but it does pop up constant error messages. Since the console has a lot of features that aren't simple geometric shapes, I decided to forego the usual measure, CAD, print, test, adjust cycle.

Instead, I just scanned the console with my Creality Raptor. While the scanned model wasn't good enough to allow me to do a simple boolean on a cube, it did give me perfect reference geometry. I didn't measure a thing. I just sketched it out in CAD, adjusted there until I was satisfied and hit print.

It was super satisfying when it fit perfectly on the first try and I didn't have to iterate at all

EDIT: Model as requested

Uploading 3MF to Makerworld without Bambu Studio

Quick question.

I've shared models in the past on various sites. I have one I was thinking of publishing, but this one is the first one I've made that's multicolor. It's has close to 60 parts, so just uploading an STL/STEP like I usually would isn't ideal. I really want to include a 3MF. I don't own any Bambu products though. I know Makerworld won't accept 3MFs for other printers. Is there a way to generate a 3MF for one of their printers without having to install their software? Is there any other way I can share my model as a 3MF that already has assigned colors and settings without having to use their software? If it's too much of an issue I'll just stick to Printables, I was just thinking I wanted to share what I made more widely

Best way to color a model?

I'm just starting to set up my U1. I am excited to start playing around with multicolor TPU prints. I wanted to try this shoe I found on MW. I was hoping to print the base in green and the teeth in white. I'm just not sure of the best way to color this model. The fill tool doesn't detect the edges very well. The cylinder tool more or less works, but it's very tedious to use. Is there a better way to do this or do I just need to sit down for an hour and painstakingly trace out each tooth?

A simple plea from a former Michigander

The fall of Paris taught the world a lesson: appeasement only delays the inevitable.

My brethren. We tried compromise. We offered unity. We offered a coalition that respected both sides. "Superior" was to be the greatest state.

Megasota chose conquest instead.

Today we fall, but understand this: you are not witnessing the end of one faction. You are witnessing the beginning of an empire that will come for all of you the moment it becomes convenient.

The time has come for our D-Day.

Vote Megasota out before you become the next occupied territory.

Transitioning into remote?

Hello,

My BF is job hunting. I searched this sub but most of the related posts were from a few years ago, and I know the job market has changed a lot recently.

He's hoping to get into a remote tech role. He currently has 6 years retail experience and holds the national certification. He's licensed in our state as well. I was just wondering if someone could offer advice on transitioning to remote from retail?

- Most job postings list the state where they want you to be licensed. Do you have to get this license before interviewing, or is it enough to tell them you have the national credential and will become licensed in the required state if they decide to move forward?

- What should he know before he starts applying?

- Any helpful tips from those who have been in this position before?

I hope this is allowed. I'm just trying to be helpful and supportive of him

OK hear me out.

But they don't sell thin mints cereal any more. Anyone know of a substitute?
