How long before Microsoft Copilot is your real Copilot?

How long will it be before AI takes over the job of the copilot on commercial flights? On a similar note, how long before the flight Captain is also AI?

Personally I believe both will be AI within five years. There are so many advantages to having a non human in control of the plane. They are never drunk or tired. They have no limits on how many hours they are allowed to work. They don’t make simple errors that humans sometimes make (what I mean is like simple math errors like when calculating the fuel or weight preflight)

I’m not saying AI will not make mistakes, it probably will make some early on. But eventually the creators will adjust for these and it will get better.

Think about the savings for the airline companies. A full subscription to ChatGPT is 20 dollars a month. Compare that with 20,000 a month for a pilot, and you don’t have to pay for a healthcare plan or any other benefits. Even if they needed a separate subscription for every pilot that is a huge savings.

Before you ask, yes I own stock in two major US airline companies and I want them to go up. But most of all I want everyone to have the benefit cheap safe flights all around the world and not have any concerns about human error in the cockpit. I have much respect for pilots but maybe it’s time to hang up the hat.

Edit: Okay, I can see that this idea isn’t very popular, but I ask you to reconsider. I forgot to include some information that some of you may already know.
Commercial airplanes already have a feature that allows them to fly themselves, it’s called autopilot. We are already halfway there. Here’s another one, planes can already land themselves in some weather conditions. Now we’re 2/3rds there. All we need is a takeoff algorithm that shouldn’t be too hard. Then you have a functioning pilot that can take you anywhere, just tell it where to go. I’m sure the AI can look up weather stuff on their own too and adjust for conditions. My AI can already look up the weather for me. I hope this helps.

DAE wonder why Reddit allows you to downvote your own posts and comments?

There I did it to my own post. Now, if I really didn’t like what I wrote I could have deleted it. But I guess in case you don’t see your own name you can be like, “what dumass wrote that?“ Click Down.

I don’t see the point. Unless you want to have that unpopular downvoted comment that gets hidden. I guess some people want that.

When pilots are in mid flight on a long haul flight are they allowed to watch a streaming service like prime video on their primary flight display?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, I genuinely don’t know what pilots are doing on long haul flights when it’s basically Auto Pilot flying the plane. I was thinking maybe they watch videos sometimes. Is this allowed?

Obviously not during takeoff and landing when its focus time, but I could see some time for Netflix on a long haul flight. But maybe that’s strictly forbidden and they just talk and watch their instruments for hours.

Is there a term for the Jamaican language?

To me it sounds like English with a lot of slang words and phrases mixed in, but the slang is so pervasive that in combination with their accent it’s almost completely unintelligible to a non jamaican native English speaker.

If I hear a conversation I might be able to pick out a few words here and there but there’s no way I can understand it. On the other hand they seem to understand me just fine, I’m sure they have to alter the way they say things when speaking to a non jamaican English speaker but they have no trouble doing it. The language is really an enigma to me, it’s so different.

The Beach Boys “I Get Around”

This is a cool song, I absolutely love the sound of it and most of the lyrics make sense but for some reason the lyrics of the chorus feel off and it doesn’t quite make sense with the rest of the song.

I get around
Get around, 'round, 'round, I get around
From town to town
Get around, 'round, 'round, I get around
I'm a real cool head
Get around, 'round, 'round, I get around
I'm making real good bread

Now, the rest of the lyrics suggest that these boys like to meet women and race their car against other cars.

It makes sense that they’re doing this while traveling to different towns.

“I’m a real cool head“

okay he’s cool, he’s chill.

”I’m making real good bread”

What!? I’m so confused, is he also baking bread as a side gig? It just doesn’t fit unless these guys are some modern hipster type guys from San Francisco. I didn’t think this was a cool thing to do at the time the Beach Boys were writing music, going around racing cars, meeting women, and baking bread. I don’t know, it just doesn’t fit.

How close are we to having electronic line calling that is cheap and available so every court can have it?

I’m tired of making tough calls, it actually might be the thing I hate most about local tennis matches. I know I’m not the only one. I believe I might be too generous and giving away points where it might be out, but that’s how it goes, you can’t call it out if you’re not sure.

Then I played at a club that had this but they wouldn’t let us use it for USTA and I’m like why? I played an informal match using it and it’s so much better. It’s accurate, wayyy more accurate than calling your own lines, especially while playing. This could be a thing that transforms local tennis into something you can just play and enjoy without having to be “that guy” that calls everything out, or a pushover like me who always gives the benefit of the doubt.

Question about the US bombing of mainland Japan

Why did they concentrate the bombing on the lower half of the main island? Why didn’t they bomb the top half or the northern island?

Are there a lot of Siamese cats in Thailand?

Since Thailand used to be Siam I’m assuming that’s where Siamese cats came from. Are there a lot of them or just a few?

Do modern Cambodians feel that they are able to speak freely and openly about their government?

If someone didn’t like Hun Manet would they be able to say that openly without fear or is there some hesitation due to the violent history of the country.

Edit: I don’t mean that you fear violence against you for speaking out. I mean is there a legacy from that time that still affects the culture. Kind of like how old people who still remembered the Great Depression are very careful with money even though there’s no longer a Great Depression.

I offended someone. What can I do to make this up? How can I make sure this doesn’t happen again?

So, I am a smoker *shame*. I have always been interested in the cigarettes that they sell in other parts of the world. I’m currently at a popular resort in Las Vegas and I struck up a conversation with a French Canadian woman visiting from Trios Rivières. After a few minutes I said, oh by the way have you ever tried the cigarette brand du Maurier, are they good? She scowled at me and said, ”We don’t all smoke you know!? Should I ask you why you’re so fat?” I immediately apologized, I said I’m so sorry I genuinely had no clue that was a thing.

Now I feel terrible about saying that, I genuinely wasn’t trying to offend anyone. We are still at the same resort I saw her this morning at breakfast. Should I say or do anything to try and make this up to her? Should I order poutine to her room through the room service menu? Or maybe the lumberjack special for breakfast? What is the best way to smooth this over?

How often do they need to sterilize the cockpit to keep a sterile flight deck as per the requirement?

This is per the Sterile Flight Deck rule for safety procedures in commercial airlines. How often are pilots getting sick because of unclean planes?

You can change one major thing in your life between age 10 and 20.

This must be something realistic that you could have done (so not “give myself a million dollars”).

It can be an ongoing thing that covers a period of time up to ONE year, like “study harder in 12th grade”.

It can also be a single event like, “don’t get on that bus”.

If ongoing it must be specific to one subject or aspect of your life so not, “be a better person when I was age 16”

Brawny Paper Towel Man

I swear to god the mascot for brawny towels used to be clean shaven. No beard or mustache at all.

And no, I am not talking about the wimpy looking blonde guy from the 80s with a mustache.

I am talking about the current Brawny guy, with short dark brown hair and a beard. I remember him being clean shaven but I can’t find any proof of it.

Is this common at the 3.0 level to not anticipate the spin?

One of the guys I have as a doubles partner is actually a decent strong player for 3.0 but he always gets tricked by the spin. Whenever an opponent slices the ball or otherwise imparts underspin he always stands back waiting for a normal bounce. Then once he realizes it’s bouncing short he lunges forward to try and get to the ball and he says something like, Jeez that was some crazy spin! I’m like, yeah that’s what happens when they chop down on the ball it’s called a slice.

I recently started to call it out for him when I see it, I say move in! Or, crazy spin! but he usually moves too late to get the ball. Is there anything else I can do for him? How common is this?

Is this considered bad etiquette?

Is it considered bad etiquette to fart on an outdoor pickleball court? I’ve gotten two basic answers here. Some people say who cares, you’re outdoors. Other people say absolutely yes it is terrible etiquette because you should not fart in close proximity even outdoors.

This came up when we were up against a husband and wife 3.0 team and the husband had terrible gas. They start arguing, the wife tells him to get out and let someone else play. He kept saying who cares we’re outdoors, and she was like no get your nasty butt out of here! Honestly neither me nor my partner smelled anything so we didn’t care but it was really funny to watch and it sparked a debate amongst my team. What do you think?
