I have finally did it Full SBS on Dolphin Android

There was an issue on Android its basically impossible to get Full SBS set up on Dolphin emulator.

This isnt an issue on Citra (3DS) where the emulator has external screen support natively

It also isnt an issue when playing Stereo 3D videos where VLC player plays videos externally with full SBS.

But on Dolphin there was no way to do full SBS and I was always stuck with half SBS which isnt as sharp. Here are the steps to make Full SBS work on Dolphin Android

  1. go into Android/Data/org.dolphin/config and edit the GFX.ini

There is something called StereoPerEyeResolutionFull = True add that in

  1. Install Shizuku

  2. Within Shizuku go through the step by step where it asks you to enable developer mode and enable Wireless Debugging then pair code.

  3. Install SecondScreen app. You will be prompted to give permissions for Shizuku once opened

  4. Within SecondScreen app, in setting enable Pro mode. Then create a new profile and set a custom resolution of 3840x1080. Save theb load this profile. The screen should now go into ultra wide mode.

  5. Open Dolphin, in settings select Enhancements. Then select Stereoscopic and enable Side by Side. You can also change the depth in here as well.

If you set all this up once. Every time you want to play in Stereo 3D its a simple 2 step process of going into SecondScreen and loading your saved profile, then enabling Stereo 3D on Dolphin.

Im sure this may also help with things like Moonlight Game Streaming in Stereo 3D which I haven't got around to yet.

Stereo3D Gaming on Android

Devices are Rokid Max and Retroid Pocket Nova

Been tinkering and found that Dolphin on Android actually supports Stereo 3D. You can even adjust the strength of the 3D.

Many GameCube and Wii games look and feel like they were made for Stereo 3D. And with the glasses because each eye has its own screen there is zero cross talk.

The only issue is with Dolphin you can only do half side by side resolution (SBS). As Dolphin doesnt support full SBS. This makes the picture less crisp. Apparently on PC handhelds this isnt an issue so I wish someone would create a Dolphin fork or Dolphin devs add full SBS support. Does anyone here have a solution to get Dolphin to output full SBS?

I haven't even got into Citra for 3DS emulation but apparently it supports full SBS on Android

Is there a list of Android emulators and games and what supports Stereo 3D?

Retroid Pocket Nova is more pocketable than I initially thought

So I have owned a Retroid Pocket Nova for a while. I immediately change the sticks to low profile sticks. I have been taking my Nova out more than I do compared to previous devices I have owned. No case just a glass screen protector.

I initially thought because it has stack triggers and sticks that are not recessed enough, it wouldnt compare to a clamshell when it comes to pocketability.

However I took out my DSi XL and came to realise the Nova is way more pocketable and the DSi XL bothered me where I noticed it too much. I had the same issue with the RG477M. I came to the conclusion there are 2 key things that I find makes a device matter for pocketability. That is weight and thickness.

I have listed the weight of some popular devices below. As you can see the Nova is very light in comparison to many similar sized devices. I have also uploaded a picture (number 2) comparing the size to Xbox Ally X, Switch 2, DSi XL and New 3DS, best way to describe the size is its similar to a PSP. Finally I uploaded a thickness comparison compared to a DSi XL (picture number 3).

New 3DS - 253g

Retroid Pocket Nova - 255g

Vita OLED WiFi - 260g

RG405M - 260g

PSP 1000 - 280g

RG476H - 290g

Retroid Pocket Flip 2 - 306g

DSi XL - 314g

New 3DS XL - 329g

RG477M- 354g

Ayn Thor - 380g

My all black collection

Xbox Ally X for PC gaming, 360 and PS3 emulatuon because for me its the most comfortable to hold PC handheld and can dual boot Steam OS.

Switch 2 for Switch 1 and 2 exclusives (I also own a hacked OLED Switch not pictured here).

Retroid Pocket Nova for a pocketable device that plays all retro games pre HD era upto Xbox, Wii and PS2. With some older 4:3 PC games emulated. PSP is also played here because even with black bars you still get close to original PSP screen size.

DSi XL for DS games as original hardware has the least input lag and resisitive touchscreen with stylus and has scaling issues playing on 3DS hardware. DSi XL has the IPS screen and is the best DS model, other DS models have weird ghosting issues. I use this with a DSOne flashcart which supports save states.

New 3DS as I quite enjoy the stereo 3D effect as well as least input lag on original hardware. I find New 3DS XL build quality not as good (peeling issue with the plastic). My New 3DS is hacked.

Retroid Pocket Nova is my endgame - My impressions

Everyone's use cases for a retro handhelds is different. For some its imitating Gameboy form factor for nostalgia. For some its having a large screen and can emulate modern systems like Switch and PC games.

But for me its being able to emulate all pre HD era systems in a pocketable form factor with the largest screen possible while being comfortable.

Ive been part of this hobby since 2023 and I can say for certain I have found my endgame retro handheld. I know endgame gets tossed around a lot but I genuinely cant think of anything major that can be improved. Im not into clamshell form factor as its heavier, less comfortable due to being boxy, and potential hinge issues. Verticals with a 4.5 inch screen would be too large and very uncomfortable for stick gaming. Dual screen and 16:9 I dont want as I prefer playing Switch, 3DS, PC games on original hardware for better input latency, resistive touch screen, stereo 3D etc. I also feel for HD era games i need a 7inch screen minimum which would kill the pocketability factor. HD era systems also lack save states and drain battery and have fan noise. Additional power would also not be necessary past SDG2 as I'm only targeting upto PS2. So as I've said I genuinely cant see how else they can improve on this. The only thing id change is make the sticks more flush so it helps with pocketability. I installed low profile sticks which help with this but it isn't the same as something as flush as the sticks are on a RG405M.

The combination of a large 4:3 screen, very low input lag thanks to landscape screen, 120hz which gives the option of CRT beam, SDG2 chip which allows you to use runahead, any shader, BFI etc as well as emulate anything on Wii PS2 without a sweat all while being very compact, slim, lightweight and pocketable with enough curves to make it comfortable to hold. All with things like additional M1 and M2 macro buttons for rewind and fast forward hotkeys, front firing speakers, OLED blacks. This device is going to make me quit the hobby.

I will return to the hobby once we get a pocketable clamshell like Thor that comes with Steam OS and we are at a point where PS3, 360, Xbox, Wii U, PC games can be emulated with great performance with no tinkering required. But in terms of endgame 4:3 for all pre HD systems Nova cannot be improved.

Casual player who enjoys Street Fighter but hates MvC will Ilike this?

As someone who enjoyed Street Fighter 5 and 6 but didnt enjoy the Marvel VS Capcom series because Street Fighter isnt too combo heavy and more about positioning and countering. MvC games felt too floaty and fast paced. I didnt like super jumps, long combos and massive beams with so much stuff going on. I am a Marvel IP fan so it would be nice to have a Marvel fighting game that feels more grounded rather thab over the top like MvC.

RP Dual Screen Add On likely has input lag with Retroid Pocket Nova

Seen a YouTube video of someonee using the Dual Screen add on. In Mario 3D Land at the end of a stage a yellow screen gets filled right to left. Both top and bottom should be aligned. I quickly pressed pause and its obviously the top screen is slightly behind from the bottom. Maybe the bottom screen is set to 120hz in the video but who knows.

Im not sure if the lag is similar on RP5. I remember initially it was really bad and got improved with a firmware update but I bet the firmware update wasnt enough to fully eliminate input lag where its the same as the bottom screen. Also I remember there was considerable increase in battery drain when connected.

Finally we can see the new Nova screen has a different color temp. In my opinion the top screen color temp looks better. Hopefully we can adjust the color temp and its not a screen issue.

Just my few observations watching recent footage of the Nova.

A look back at emulation handhelds and what the future will be like

I was just thinking we have come so far when it comes to retro handhelds and Android emulation. So i decided to take a quick look back how far we have come.

Early Era - Most were still using hacked PSPs for retro emulation on handhelds. GP32 the OG of retro handhelds had a few successors such as Dingo A320 before 2013 but nothing was as popular as a hacked PSP before 2013. We also had emulation tinkering in Symbian devices like NGage and Nokia N95 alot of the emulation work on those devices were actually ported to Android. Smarphones basically fully took over around 2012-2013 although around 2009/2010 early adopters of Smartphones were emulating SNES etc.

2013 - This is the year we got the Snapdragon 800 series which put Snapdragon on the map when it comes to ARM chipsets. I had a Galaxy Note 3 at the time. It was when I first got into tinkering on a smartphone. This phone i kept for such a long time as many later generation stopped having replaceable battery and the newer 810 Snapdragon chips had heating issues. That same year we got Drastic emulator for DS emulation. PSP Emulation got better with JIT. We also got the Nvidia Shield portable which was the most powerful handheld at the time.

2016/2017 - Fast forward to these years we started seeing the first retro handhelds that took inspiration from the gameboy form factor (Bittboy, RS90). Vulcan was starting to get used on the Android side which immensely improved PSP Emulation where you got fullspeed at higher resolutions. We also got the Snapdragon 825/835 chipsets on more devices which was a recovery from the overheating 810 chipsets. We also got the first decent Android handheld with built in controls with the GPD XD as well as the first handheld PC with GPD Win. While they were not as mainstream as Deck and Retroid Pocket devices GPD were one of the originators of these form factors.

2019 - This was the year Anbernic made a splash with RG350 and we started getting Youtube channels focusing on Retro handhelds such as the famous RetroGameCorps. In the Android space the Snapdragon 855 was a very efficient and powerful chip. Galaxy S10 was considered a emulation powerhouse. Android spacs got substantially better this year with fullspeed emulation for N64 and Dreamcast (Redream). Retroarch was popularised on Android this year thanks to UI improvements such as Ozone, as well as 64 bit support. With things like runahead and shaders being supported this year.

2020/2021 - These were the years where Retro handhelds devices really exploded with more options and form factors. We had Powkiddy V90, RG280v, Miyoo Mini, RG351M, Funkey. This matured with nicer UIs and game art with Emulation Statuon front ends. We also had Retroid Pocket 2 which used Android and made the company popular. Speaking of Android in the phone space things got really good. We got the Razor Kishi which made controllers on phones popular. You could get flagship performance on a budget with things like Samsung S20 FE and Poco X3 Pro. Gamecube emulation finally reached near fullspeed for most games thanks to the MMJR fork.

2022 - Retro handhelds hit mainstream here where we got Onion and Garlic OS which help popularised Miyoo Mini Plus and RG35XX. High end retro handhelds that went passed the PS1 limit started gaining more ground with RP3+, Ayn Odin, RG405M. We basically got perfect PSP, N64, Dreamcast emulation in these higher end retro handhelds. AetherSX2 launched around this time which was a huge boom for high end Android emulation where we finally get PS2 games on our phones. This was also the year Steam Deck released which popularised PC handhelds.

2023 - Retro handhelds went even more mainstream this year thanks to R36 being so cheap on tiktok shops. This was the year of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 which is still to this day considered the endgame chipset for upto PS2 and Dolphin. The 888 and Gen 1 chipsets were a dissapointment from the prior years compared to 865 due to heating issues. Odin 2 made huge waves thanks to having this chipset and to this day new devices still use this chipset. Because this chipset was so good 3DS and PS2 emulation were basically perfected with high resolution fullspeed emulation and even Switch emulation late in the year was decent. This was the year ROG Ally released which popularised Windows handhelds and the Z1E has been the perfomance king where we havent seen enough perfomance gains since in the PC handhelds space until the MSI Claw EX this year.

2024/2025 - PC emulation on Android gained more traction. We had winlator before but Gamehub made things much simpler. Of course the first dual screen retro handheld released with the Ayn Thor and was a hit instantly. We started seeing more smaller form factor PS2 capable retro handhelds with RP5, Flip 2, RP Mini and RG477M. We pretty much reached endgame when it came to upto PS2 emulation.

Future - So I look at Switch and PC emulation still in its early phase. I think we will get Steam OS thats good on ARM (Steam Frame should help push things forward). And enough compatability and performance that can match Steam Deck Perfomance at 720p. So im predicting the perfect timing for this will be the Odin 4 which hopefully releases at fall 2027. I just see things all aligning together for a golden era for PC gaming on ARM. When I mean things aligning I mean Steam OS from Steam Frame, SD8 Elite Gen 6 using 2nm chipset. Things like Cluster Tune that helps with heating and battery life. Oryon drivers maturing etc. We will be at a point where we will finally get pocketable PC gaming device that matches Steam Deck performance and compatability. 2027/2028 will be the true golden era of emulation handhelds if i had to guess thanks to PC emulation (and maybe Switch emulation). I even think we might get an official Steam Deck mini on ARM from Valve by 2027/2028.

I figured why Sony are not doing physical games

Its because of backwards compatibility and old games competing with new games.

I remember when PS3 came out or even when PS4 came out. Because the graphics and gameplay jump was quite substantial no one cared to play old games. There was no such thing as a backlog as you start a fresh. No one wanted to go back to old looking games once the new thing was out. It also helped that PS3 didn't play PS2 games (well most models) and PS4 didnt play PS3 games.

Since the PS5 has come out I have been noticing people dont mind playing older PS4 games. That is because the graphics and gameplay improvements have not been significant. To this day Red Dead Redemption 2 can compete with current gen games. We have hit a point where people cant tell the difference anymore. Now people are being more patient. I have yet to even play God of War Ragnarok or Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and these are 2 franchises I really like. The other day I just finished Uncharted 4 which I bought for dirt cheap used. Because digital needs to compete with physical where you can buy used, they tend to have massive sales. So Uncharted 4 goes on sale in PSN for a good price too. In the all digital future I can see publishers not having to cut prices of old games as much anymore as there is no competition. So that person who is satisfied playing old games for dirt cheap might not get that option anymore or the sales price is a measly 10 percent. This wont happen overnight in 2028 but things will slowly shift where the sale prices get worse and worse by 2032 it will be normal to not have good sales.

Nova is a side grade to the RG477M

This has the metal chasis. Its not for everyone but it feels premium as hell

Its a tank I have dropped in numerous time and only dot a tiny dent on the air vent which you cant tell until you look closely. My last plastic handheld was a RG35XXH which the screen instantly shattered after a drop

The in line shoulders make this more slimmer. Yes it restricts you from playing games that require analogue input but there are many out there that dont care for these types of games.

The D Pad and buttons are mushy. There are people who prefer the classic Anbernic mushy buttons over clicky Retroid buttons

The screen is 0.2 inches bigger than the Nova screen. Although its not a OLED its a quality LPTS 120hz screen. No need to worry about weird issues like temporary burn in, PWM flicker or pentile sub pixel layout.

It has Gamma OS which allows thebuse of shaders and BFI for standalone emulators like Dolphin and PS2.

To this day there has been no widespread QC issues reported, e.g screen failures, buttons not working etc

Opted on using my old M6 HD on Switch 2 and here's why

So I have been looking at impressions for the Mobapad M12 Switch 2 Joycons and there are mixed impressions. Unlike the first M6 Mobapads for Switch 1 the impressions on comfort vary. On M6 nearly everyone said it was comfortable.

The more I thought about it I realised it could be due to the height of the device. I had the same issues with many PC handhelds including the Steam Deck. The taller a device is the more uncomfortable it is to hold. Of course with a 8inch screen its difficult to decrease the height of the Joycons. So I decided to get some 3rd party Switch 1 Joycon adapters. There are some adapter that have the screen more centre but I went for the ones where the bottom is flush and screen is not centre which makes more sense to me when it comes to comfort. I just tried it now and its very comfortable.

I want to know if there is anyone out there with both M12 and M6 and tried both solutions. I only tried M6 with adapter and never tried M12 so I cant compare but my gut feeling is this is better option

Update If anyone cared to follow this post just played a bit of Street Fighter 6, Rocket League and Zelda BotW and I can confidently say this is a extremely comfortable setup

Lack of training stages

One of the biggest appeals of the original Wii Spirts was the training stages. I have great memories of playing Target practise on tennis. I wish each sport had lots of sub games and training games. But judging by the trailer it seems like we will likely not get this which is a shame.
