Too Good to be True?

Forecast has 80s for con this year. Seems like it's always in the 90s. What do yall think will actually happen?

Can we ban license plate posts?

We get it. Some people don't like the new ones. That's ok. Do we really need multiple posts a day on the same issue? Maybe a megathread?

WW2 Destroyers Repurposed as Anti Drone Escorts?

Someone posted a pic of an old Fletcher earlier, which caused me to check Wikipedia where I saw they stayed in service until 2001 with the Mexican navy. If other ancient destroyers were lying around somewhere today, could they be modified for use as anti drone escorts for cargo ships? I'm thinking you replace the 5" guns with modern 40mm Bofors, add a couple of phalanxes (so no need to install new radar as they have their own, and use the older versions that are presumably kept in storage somewhere), modern 20 or 25mm autocannons in place of the smaller AAA. No torpedoes or depth charges. MANPADS like RBS-70NG or Mistral 3 could be fitted somewhere to add even more defense against cruise missiles and the unlikely jet aircraft.

If an oil tanker were flanked by a pair of these, it should be quite safe from drones/small boats and decently protected from AShMs right? They'd need to stay very close but that's doable. I'm thinking, why send modern warships with 200+ sailors on this mission when you could send an obsolete destroyer with a smaller crew? You get protection at much lower cost/risk. Yes, I'm ignoring the mines.

Should my Daughter go to the Bunny Hutch?

She's a little shy. How do you think she'll be received at the Bunny Hutch? She's free roam and has never been kept in a hutch but I'm pretty sure she'd be the most beautiful of all the bunnies! /S

Flu/Covid availability

Hi!

I started taking Cosentyx this spring, so I'm now at higher risk of infection/more severe symptoms. I'm 38 and otherwise healthy. I go to a convention with friends in Atlanta every year on Labor Day weekend and have no plans to change that, but being around 75,000 or so people in relatively confined spaces presents risks. My one experience with Covid came from this event a few years ago.

I always try to get vaccinated beforehand but the new vaccines aren't always available in time. I've heard it can take a few weeks for protection to develop after vaccination.

If I can't find new flu/covid shots, is there any value in getting last year's versions? Will a pharmacy let me have the quadrivalent/senior version (protects from more flu strains) instead of the standard version? Has anyone heard when new flu and covid shots are expected to be released in the US? I've checked and can't find anything on the CDC website (no surprise these days I guess). I got flu and covid boosters last September, shortly after my trip (that's when they were avaliable), but was less concerned since my immune system wasn't compromised at that time. Is it safe to get vaccinated less than a year after the previous one?

I plan to wear a mask during the con but honestly it's gonna be a surgical mask, not an N95. The heat/humidity in Atlanta is unbearable as it is and I'm choosing to balance protection with comfort.

Pat Tallman Fear Workshop?

Should I pay $40 for a 45 minute workshop with Patricia Tallman where she teaches people how to overcome fear using her professional experiences? She's doing this at Dragon Con this year.

Do I Have Thrush?

Photos

38m, smoker (trying to quit), coffee drinker. I noticed this almost two months ago and at that time the color was more whitish. My mom said it was probably thrush (she's had it before) and that I should get it looked at. I take Cosentyx and at the time was also taking Doxycycline twice a day (treatment for HS) so both of those put me at risk for thrush. I brush, use mouthwash, and floss (both regular and water flossing). I use a CPAP. I wear a bite splint at night because of clenching and jaw pain. I've had two root canals on lower teeth.

I've tried wiping my tongue with a paper towel and using a flosser to see if I can scrape anything off, nothing really comes off. Nothing like cottage cheese, no irritation/bleeding. So that doesn't fit the descriptions I've read of thrush. No unusual taste, no pain. It might be hard to see in the pictures but the discoloration went back as far as I could see but only on my tongue, no other parts of my mouth.

Urgent care PA said it was definitely thrush and gave me 2 days of Diflucan, which didn't do anything. I already had an appointment with my dermatology PA the next week so I asked him about it, he also said it was thrush and gave me Nystatin rinse which I used for a month. I couldn't really notice a difference. Dermatology PA looked in my throat and said everything beyond the tongue looked normal. He said thrush is a common side effect from Cosentyx and that it typically resolves quickly with treatment and doesn't usually recur. He checked my entire mouth for leukoplakia or other abnormalities and said he didn't see anything.

I don't have a sore throat or other symptoms and I honestly don't want to bother my primary doctor with this because it'll take 2 or 3 more months just to get an appointment with him and I already have one for early August anyway. I have an appointment with my dentist for a cleaning next month too.

I think this is just staining from smoking and drinking lots of coffee. It does seem to change color somewhat though. When I first wake up, the color is whitish. After I've had coffee, the color is darker like in the photos. It gets lighter and darker throughout the day. Sometimes my tongue is its normal color! This more than anything is what makes me think it's not thrush and that the two PAs were too quick to jump to that conclusion. What do you think?

Documents for Real ID?

Going to the DMV soon to renew my license, which is a Real ID. Since I already gave them my birth certificate before do I need to take it with me for the renewal? I'd assume they keep copies of everything.... But this is South Carolina. I had trouble finding a clear answer on the website.
