JUG FACE (2013)

JUG FACE (2013)

On Prime, Pluto, Hoopla, JustWatch

When she learns the supernatural pit worshipped by her remote community in the woods has demanded her as a blood sacrifice, Ada struggles to find a way to survive, while the pit lashes out in anger.

While not overly scary, gory, or intense, this was an interesting folk horror movie with a pretty unique story. Worth a watch as it’s also on the shorter side at 81min.

WE GO ON (2016)

~Tubi, Fawesome, Roku, Fandango, Cineverse, BloodStream, Chilling, Filmzie~

Paralyzed by his fear of dying, Miles Grissom takes out an advert offering $30,000 in reward money to the first person who can show him evidence of an angel, a demon, or prove that ghosts exist - anything to prove to him that we go on after our deaths. He narrows the responses down to three viable candidates - a scientist, a medium, and a worldly entrepreneur. Along with his protective mother, he embarks on an adventure through Los Angeles that will spiral into an unthinkable nightmare.

Interesting concept and a pretty entertaining movie. I’d say it’s more of a supernatural thriller/drama with some horror themes. The main character gets a little whiny at times, but it’s got some good twists, some tense scenes, and one of the best movie mothers ever in Annette O’Toole.

AMERICAN MARY

On ScreamBox, Fawesome, Sling, Plex, Pluto, Roku, Tubi, Xumo, Hoopla, Kanopy.

The allure of easy , money sends Mary Mason, a medical student, into the world of underground surgeries which ends up leaving more marks on her than her so called 'freakish' clients.

Now that was a fun (and a little bizarre/quirky) movie. I was half thinking it was going to be like a gender role reversal “American Psycho”, but the story is much different with the lead character. Katherine Isabelle was awesome as Mary.

A bloody good time!

GAIA (2021)

On Tubi and Kanopy

An injured forest ranger on a routine mission is saved by two off-the-grid survivalists. What is initially a welcome rescue grows more suspicious as the son and his renegade father reveal a cultish devotion to the forest.

What a pretty wild, folk/eco-horror movie. It’s got similar concept to a popular series (no spoilers) but this movie is more grounded in nature than survival. Maybe some Midsommar vibes too. Definitely caught me off guard as creepy, trippy, and entertaining as it was.

THE STICKMAN’S HOLLOW (2024)

On Fawesome and Plex

A series of mysterious and savage murders plague an area of remote wilderness known for its insidious past.

Pretty solid FF folk horror. The content is not really anything new (it’s a bit “Blair Witch”y), but the presentation of the story is pretty unique and segmented into intertwining chapters. Worth a watch.

DON’T BREATHE

~Netflix, Tubi~

Three delinquents break into the house of a war veteran who is blind to steal his money. However, they discover that the man is not as defenseless as he seems.

Very intense, suspenseful, and downright brutal. The lines of protagonist vs. antagonist certainly gets skewed throughout the film. Great watch!

THE TOLL (2020)

~Streaming on MovieSphere and US Rental on Prime, AppleTV+ and Fandango~

A socially awkward ride-share driver and a weary passenger try to make it to their destination while being haunted by a supernatural threat.

Pretty solid indie horror! The leads worked well together, the atmosphere suspenseful, the environment was creepy, and it’s a crisp 80min that’s paced well. The ending might be a bit divisive, but it’s overall an enjoyable watch.

It’s got some similarities to stranded/stuck movies like “Dead End”, “Drive Back”, “Wind Chill” and “Brightwood”, which are all movies I enjoyed.

EXIT 8 (2025)

~In Theaters or US Rental on: Prime, AppleTV+, Plex, YouTubeTV, and Fandango~

Filmed in Japanese (used English subtitles)

A man trapped in an endless sterile subway passageway sets out to find Exit 8. The rules of his quest are simple: do not overlook anything out of the ordinary. If you discover an anomaly, turn back immediately. If you don't, carry on. Then leave from Exit 8. But even a single oversight will send him back to the beginning. Will he ever reach his goal and escape this infinite corridor? Based on the hit video game.

Having never played the game (my daughter has and raves about it) this was a very entertaining, and often FRUSTRATING, Liminal space thriller/psychological/horror film. I wasn’t sure how they would pull off a 95min movie with such a simple premise and space, but it worked as it was very intriguing to see what happened (or didn’t) next during the journey. There’s a deeper meaning and themes to the story beyond its liminal space elements, but overall pretty entertaining…and frustrating! (But that’s kinda the point).

CIRCUS OF THE DEAD (2014)

~Tubi, Prime, Roku, Fawesome, Fubo, Plex, Pluto, Xumo, Fandango~

A sadistic group of clowns kidnap an unsuspecting man and his daughters, forcing him to play a deadly game in order to save his family.

Gritty, Brutal, Sadistic, Nihilistic, and leaves you hopeless and full of dread. Definitely a good horror movie for hard core fans, but it’s certainly not an easy watch. I did like the cast of clowns 🤡.

The movie gave me some House of 1000 Corpses vibes which I am a fan of. And stay for the post credit scene!

Part 2 stuck in development?

WHO’S WATCHING OLIVER

~Tubi, Roku, Fandango~

Who's watching Oliver tells the story of a mentally unstable loner lost in a life forced upon him. By night Oliver aimlessly wanders the streets and bars on what can only be described as a truly shocking and humiliating killing spree. His only savior and possible way out of a life he is desperate to escape comes in the form of the beautiful Sophia with her sweet eccentricity and naivety to the danger she has put herself in.

I like to watch themed horror movies around their specific holiday, so I gave this a shot as it’s on a Mother’s Day horror list I saw and I’ve heard it’s messed up…

… and it so is! Oliver feels like the disturbing hybrid of Forrest Gump and Patrick Bateman (and maybe some Norman Bates) and he takes us on a dark ride of murder, mayhem, and insanity. His mother is downright a monster (and a whiny pervert!).

**Caution as there are lots of graphic scenes of violence on women.**

MKII was a love letter to us OG gamers and fans

Those who know me know I am an OG Mortal Kombat nerd…this movie nailed it! MKII was a love letter for us late GenXers/Xennials/Elder Millennials gamers that spent countless hours (and quarters) playing the original games in the 90s in the arcade and on numerous platforms. Lore, Fatalities, Characters, Areas, Quotes, Campiness, Easter Eggs, and of course Johnny “F’n” Cage. As much as I love the original 1995 movie, this movie tops it. They really delivered for us MK fans and the most fun I’ve had a a theater in a long time.

WHISTLE (2025)

A misfit group of unwitting high school students stumble upon a cursed object, an ancient Aztec Death Whistle. They discover that blowing the whistle and the terrifying sound it emits will summon their future deaths to hunt them down.

Released today on Shudder, it’s not a bad “death comes for you” teen horror similar to the Final Destination (and Smile) series. Nothing overly new here but entertaining enough and a few of the deaths were truly gnarly. There’s a mid-credits scene also.

THE BELDHAM (2025)

On Paramount+ and Prime (US Rental)

A struggling new mother fights a generations-old presence lurking within her family home, threatening her safety, her sanity, and the life of her infant child.

Pretty good dark family drama with some horror elements. The ending really hit me hard! 😭

Shudder, AMC+, Philo

While searching for Nazi documents in an Austrian farmhouse, a team of experts uncovers a hidden secret buried in its bowels. American expatriate Gunner S. Holbrook becomes obsessed with solving the mystery, and as his sanity wanes, he must confront an insatiable evil.

The easiest way to explain it for potential viewers is this: If you liked the experience of “The Outwaters” then you may like this movie. If you hated “The Outwaters” then you may hate this movie. It left me with a very similar experience IMO. (Luckily no-pinhole flash light views thou). There is a few tough to watch scenes…especially for us men! 😳
