How to save time shopping for anime/TCG/figures/plushes in Japan
Hi everyone, I know this is old news but I often see posts looking for recommendations where to buy certain merch in Japan. The usual answers are Mandarake, AmiAmi, Suruga-ya, BookOff, K-Books, stores in Nakano Broadway and so on...
While all of these are true, I would like to once again give advice how to considerably save time if you are looking for a specific product. I am writing this as an experienced Japan traveler, and also an avid collector of Japanese merch and memorabilia. I live in EU so while visiting Japan I always prioritize buying certain stuff in person tif I can find it instead of shipping it to my country (shipping + tariffs cost are getting ridiculously high).
The problem with buying in person is of course you are wasting your precious time browsing stores. It may be fun for a while and if you really like browsing stores this does not probably apply to you. But for a lot of other people who don't want to waste time going to random stores and blindly looking for a product and then not finding it at all, there is a better way: Proxy shopping service.
I use FromJapan but there are others (Zenmarket, Buyee, Neokyo). On those sites you can find detailed instructions how it works but in short: you find the product sold in Japan, you pay and FromJapan agent buys it for you, the item gets shipped to a location IN JAPAN and this is considered your warehouse, then you can choose to make your own parcel with your items and to ship them to your country. Every order has a 500 JPY flat fee for handling your item but that is actually very cheap service.
So we get to the most important thing, if you buy merch this way, you can buy stuff from Mercari, and Mercari is a second hand shopping platform, If you feel discouraged by the word second-hand, don't be. Because Japanese people are famous for their careful handling and descriptions and I have never been disappointed. I assure you you can prrobably find everything you are looking for but the challenge is searching for stuff. I recommend searching in japanese language string. You basically have to translate the product to japanese or ask chatgpt how would a japanese resident search for that porduct on that platform - works for me every time.
So other that the availability of products, prices tend to be significantly lower than in person stores since you are buying from private sellers. So what you do is following:
- you buy everything you want to and ship it to your warehouse
- you contact your hotel about 30 days before arriving in japan asking if it is possible for them to receive your parcel for you and save it until you arrive (99% hotels do this)
- 7-10 days before your arrival in hotel you instruct shipping to the hotel you are staying in japan (the shipping prices are notoriously low), the parcel usually arrives in 2-3 days but i put 7-10 just to be sure
- you arrive in hotel and pickup your parcel and now you basically have everything you wished to find there without wasting time, of course you can still go browse the stores but there will be no disappointment of not finding what you were looking for and you got it for a whole lot cheaper because it was at lower price on average and no shipping outside Japan
I apologize for a long post but I see posts from time to time asking where to go shopping so this may help some of you.
