What if beauty became a way of refusing to see?

Hi everyone,
I'm an independent filmmaker, and my short film Belladonna is currently competing for the Sofia Coppola Award on Decentralized Pictures.
Belladonna is a pseudo-historical short set during the Hundred Years' War. It follows two aristocratic women who deliberately put belladonna into their eyes in pursuit of beauty, gradually blinding themselves. The film uses this fictional premise to explore privilege, perception, and the things people choose not to see.
Public voting is part of the selection process, so if you'd like to support the project, I'd really appreciate it if you could:
• Create a free account
• Vote for Belladonna
• Share the link if you know someone who might be interested
It only takes a couple of minutes, and every vote genuinely helps independent filmmakers.
Thank you.

Belladonna

I'm an independent filmmaker currently developing a short film called Belladonna.
Logline:
During the Hundred Years' War, two aristocratic women deliberately blind themselves with belladonna in pursuit of beauty, embodying Pascal's idea of diversion as their world of spectacle and privilege shields them from the suffering their class chooses not to see.
The project is currently competing for the Sofia Coppola Award, and we've reached 38 votes so far.
I'm genuinely curious: does this premise resonate with you? Is this a film you'd want to see?
If you like the concept and would like to help bring the film to life, I'd be incredibly grateful for your vote:

And I'd love to hear your thoughts on the idea itself.

Belladonna: a Sofia Coppola Award candidate about women who choose blindness

I'm an independent filmmaker currently developing a short film called Belladonna.
The story is set during the Hundred Years' War and follows two aristocratic women who deliberately put belladonna into their eyes to achieve the beauty standards of their time, gradually blinding themselves in the process.
What interests me isn't the historical detail itself, but the question behind it:
What happens when someone knows the truth, but chooses not to see it because comfort, beauty, or pleasure feel more important?
The film is inspired by Blaise Pascal's idea of diversion — the ways we distract ourselves from suffering and reality.
The project was recently selected as a candidate for the Sofia Coppola Award on Decentralized Pictures, and public voting is currently open.
I'd genuinely love to hear your thoughts on the concept itself. Does the premise resonate with you? What does voluntary blindness mean in today's world?

Coming soon

BELLADONNA
Two aristocratic women of the French nobility blind themselves with belladonna in pursuit of beauty.
A film inspired by Blaise Pascal’s idea of “diversion” — the human tendency to escape reality through distraction.
A gap between nobility and reality.
Privilege as a frame that produces blindness.
Beauty as denial.
BELLADONNA is about what happens when seeing becomes unbearable.

🎬 Looking for a Producer / Co-Producer

I am currently developing \*Belladonna\*, an experimental short film exploring social blindness, privilege, and the mechanisms of distraction.

Inspired by the historical use of belladonna—a substance once used to enlarge the pupils while gradually impairing vision—the film examines how beauty, spectacle, and entertainment can become ways of avoiding uncomfortable realities.

The project combines experimental cinema, performance art, and a visually rich symbolic language to reflect on contemporary social and political questions.

I am looking to connect with producers interested in:
• Experimental and arthouse cinema
• Artist moving image
• International co-productions
• Festival-oriented short films

About me:
I am Mary Sabalo Vladyshevskaya, an Angolan film director and multidisciplinary artist. My practice explores identity, memory, migration, and the relationship between personal and collective narratives.
