Have you thought about a 530a for your kids? (Convert to IRA then to Roth IRA at age 24)

Have you thought about a 530A for your kids? The idea is to contribute while they’re young, then convert the account to an IRA and eventually a Roth IRA around age 24, giving them a strong head start on tax-free retirement growth. There’s also discussion that 530A contributions could potentially become pre-tax in the future, which could make the strategy even more attractive. It could be a powerful way to build long-term wealth for your kids.

5k from ages 0-18 is about 12 million tax free (in a roth) by the time they're 65. (Assuming S&P continues its average rate over the long run).

CNBC is reporting that 530A will have option to contribute pre-tax direct from paycheck. Thoughts?

Is this real? Will it happen? pretax contributions? https://www.cnbc.com/2026/08/11/trump-accounts-employer-match-paycheck-contributions-treasury.html

This is a pretty meaningful upgrade to 530A accounts. If parents can contribute pre-tax directly through payroll t starts looking much more like a child's 401k. The big question for me is whether employers actually adopt it at scale and how the final rules treat the pre-tax contribution limits. With roth conversions at 24, and the ability to use roths in a limited way for housing down payments, weddings, education etc it's interesting.

EDIT: this subreddit is ridiculous. please stop the diatribes on social security and trump. does anyone know anything about whether the content in this article is true, and when and how it will be rolled out, or how it ranks in investing accounts? the biggest downside seems to be trusting a 18 year old with hundreds of thousands, but notwithstanding that this beats a 529 in my view. if you're in the 33% income bracket the 5k year contribution is more like 3.5k. use the other 1.5k and put it into your 529 if you want. then us the 530a for college and/or convert to roth at age 24 and when your child is in a low tax bracket. when 401ks were first introduced did it takes years and years for employers to offer them? when will employers start offering 530a options?

You'll think I'm crazy but how do I keep the moss (and kill everything else)?

Do you have a "fun money" portion of your portfolio that you use for non-index funds? If so, why and what percentage?

I'm a long-term investor and the vast majority of my investments are in low-cost index funds. But I'm considering carving out a small percentage of my portfolio (maybe 2–10%) for things like individual stocks, sector ETFs, leveraged ETFs, or other higher-conviction ideas.

For those of you who do something similar:

What percentage of your portfolio is your "fun money" allocation? What kinds of investments do you put in it? Has it actually improved your returns over time, or is it mostly for entertainment/learning? Do you rebalance it back to your target allocation, or let it grow/shrink naturally?

I'm curious whether having a small "play money" allocation helps satisfy the urge to stock pick while keeping the bulk of a portfolio invested in broad index funds—or whether you've found it's better to stay 100% indexed.

Cany someone help me understand the difference between Blue Resilience, Resilience II, and Tuff Turf?

What's the main difference in terms of shade tolerance and durability for kids? This is for a annual fall overseed after aerating.

North Shore MA. North facing with 3 sections (one that's morning sun, and afternoon mix, one that's late morning sun until night, and one that's afternoon sun but with some deciduous trees).

I took the TC Quiz and it says BR anr TT, but this entire time I thought I needed R2.

Any basic beginner tips on how to add a steering console on a 14 ft aluminum v-hull (LUND)?

It doesn't have to be very nice and I'm looking for the most simple and affordable option that's safe. Just for fishing on some tidal inlets, bays, and rivers with little current. Should I hire someone for the whole thing? Just for the instal or welding? I know very basic welding but this is somewhat advanced. Bought the bough for 1.6k (pretty much brand new) FB marketplace. I regret not getting something while a steering wheel already in there, but I'm trying to do the best for what I've got. Any way to do this for like less than $500 or is that super unrealistic?

Would love to eat outside with family. What are the downsides of a simple wooden table and chairs in the middle of your lawn?

What we want is a simple wooden table for 10-15 evening dinners over the summer, and also a place to sit 2-3 times a week with a laptop or book. Not very often.

Bought the house two years ago. I've done a ton of landscaping (including cutting asphalt, reseeding lawn) and so I am a big DIY-er. But I'm reaching my limit in terms of time.

Can I just do the following?

  • Pick a spot in the center of our lawn that seems pretty level.

  • Maybe in the fall before I overseed again, throw down some soil and maybe a bit of sand, and really level off that part of the lawn before I overseed it.

  • Throw down a wooden table and chairs. Something light enough to move each tie I mow.

  • Mow that area weekly and perhaps slightly shorter than surrounding.

Questions:

  • What are the downsides? Do the legs rot? I don't have an irrigation system but will water weekly in the height of summer.

  • It it a way better idea to get stone pavers? I don't think I have it in me to make a walkway to those pavers, so wouldn't it look silly with a connecting pathway? Just a concrete paver island?

  • Anyone done this and have advice?

Choosing VTI over VOO has cost me about $44,000.00 over the past 6 years

This is rough estimate taking into the account that investing was done over those 6 years (thank you AI).

It is a tough pill to swallow, but I just ran the numbers and sticking with VTI instead of VOO cost me so much in lost gains over the last six years. It really goes to show how much of a drag those extended mid-cap and small-cap periods can be on a portfolio compared to the S&P 500. Has anyone else looked back at their own allocation and realized they missed out on major mega-cap tech growth by betting on the total market?

The point isn't that we KNOW that VOO will continue to outperform. The point is that it DOES make a difference, despite what everyone says.

It was the first one of these I've ever sent. Mid 30s. I know this is silly but we get along in person (and I've helped babysit) and it's discouraged me from ever texting again or thinking that he wants any sort of contact outside regular family gatherings. Am I reading this at all right? Should I try again in a few months and see? And by 2 weeks I mean 15 days (not 8 or something).
