Nikkah dress

I’m not sure which dress to go with for my car. The ceremony will be very small, just immediate family present so about 10 to 12 people in total. It will be held in the mosque however not in the main prayer hall. The vibe for the day is fairly low-key. We will likely just go out for dinner afterwards with family take some nice photos, et cetera but we don’t have a professional photographer for the day. We will be having a bigger reception with more family and friends two days later and I have another dress for that. Click on the photos to see them properly!

I’m not sure which dress to go for!

The first dress is satin and is very sleek, there’s with little alterations needed and I like the overall look. I also like that I don’t have to do anything to it to make it that modest. However, it’s more than I wanted to pay, especially considering it’s such a simple dress. I would be wearing quite an embellished veil with it too (something like in the picture) so that will be an extra few hundred on top of the cost of the dress. I found a tailor who can do the alterations for very cheap and I trust him, he’s done other work for me before and I’ve shown him photos of this dress already. The main thing holding me back with this dress is the price.

The second dress with the cape is significantly cheaper, but I’m worried that it looks a little too cheap? I’ve ironed it and steamed it and I’m wearing a white slip under it which I feel helps, I also added the lace sleeves. Again, it fits the low-key vibe and I would also wear a lace trimmed veil with this. It feels very flowy and quite elegant. The first dress also feels quite elegant but this one is almost 10 times cheaper! I’d probably wear a lace trimmed veil with this one to match the sleeves.

Overall I want to feel elegant and put together on on the day. It is also very hard where I live to find something truly modest, I feel these are two of the best options I found. I don’t have a whole lot of time left so I need to make a decision relatively quickly!

Nikkah dress options!

I don’t know which to go with!

The first long sleeve satin trumpet dress has been on my mind ever since I tried it on! The only thing holding me back is the price. It’s not super expensive but definitely more than I wanted to pay especially for such a simple dress with no embellishment etc. It would need some alterations but I found a tailor who can do it for a very very reasonable price! But it’s sleek and I feel put together in it, and there are multiple veil/hijab options that will work with it. P.S there is no zipper on the front of the dress- it’s the charm hanging down from my phone! Some people think it’s a random zipper?!

The second dress is floaty and easy to wear, it’s from an online retailer and is about 10% of the cost of the first one! I added a lace bolero underneath to add a little more coverage to the arms. The shoes are just for the photo, I don’t think I’d wear these exact ones but maybe something similar without a bow. Obviously it needs to be ironed but, I really like it overall but I’m worried it maybe looks a little cheap? I think I’m used to trying proper wedding dresses on that have more structure and weight and so I’m not sure whether it’s that or whether the dress just looks more like a nice dress rather than bridal and like a proper wedding dress?

For background, my Nikkah is going to be super small, just immediate family present so maybe 10-12 people. We will probably go for a nice meal after and take some photos but don’t have a professional photographer. We are having a proper wedding reception a couple of days later with more friends and family. I have a separate dress for that. So for my Nikkah I’m happy with something more low key because it’ll fit the vibe more and it’s not going to be some big all day long event.

Musical performance timings

Musical performance timings

I need help deciding different musicians play during my wedding reception.

My wedding ceremony will be completely separate with just immediate family and will be held two days before my wedding, so my conundrum is just for the reception.

The reception is in a stately home/spa hotel. There will be about 80 guests and will begin in the afternoon with a cocktail hour to welcome everyone and allow guests to gather, followed by our grand entrance in the dining hall and then a sitdown three course meal. We will have a DJ play in the evening.

Initially. I had a string Quartet planned for the cocktail hour with a harpist for our ground entrance, and to play for the first hour or so in the dining hall. But now we are thinking of having a traditional Middle eastern musical entrance called Zaffa for our grand entrance. So now I’m not sure what to do about the harpist that I had initially planned for this time. I could extend her hours and have her play as people are eating, so it will be about two hours, and then the DJ will come on. Or, I could swap the string Quartet and have them play during the dinner and have the harpist for just one hour during the welcome reception. I guess it doesn’t really matter but I also don’t want the music to be super loud whilst people are eating if they want to be able to talk to each other, but I still want to have ambience music in the background and it might be nicer to have live music rather than just playing music through the DJ system. I haven’t experienced either whilst eating dinner at a wedding so I’m not sure which would work best.

After the dinner we will cut the cake, a very short speech, I’m still not sure whether we’ll do a first dance or not, but if we do this is when we will do it. The DJ will come on properly later in the evening after the start.

Any advice on which would be best to pay during the year would be really appreciated!

Torn between 2 dresses for ceremony

Torn between 2 more dresses- this time for my ceremony

…I need another dress for my ceremony ( I have reception dress sorted) which will be a religious ceremony (Nikkah- an Islamic wedding) with very few people, just immediate family. It will take place in a function room in a mosque, so I need to be more covered. I don’t normally wear a hijab but I will have my hair semi covered with a veil for the ceremony. Afterwards we’ll have some photographs and a meal with family. It’s all pretty low key and the reception will be two days later with all our friends and family- that’s where I’ll wear my other dress!

Anywho, I’m now stuck between these two options! It’s hard to find something that is truly modest but I feel both of these tick a lot of boxes but they are very different!

Dress 1; this dress made me feel like a fairy, it had so much lace, which was gorgeous! It was very comfortable to wear, it needs some minor alterations but nothing significant. It ticks a lot of the boxes in general, however is more full than I had imagined wearing for the ceremony. Because the ceremony is more low-key and the dress needs to be more covered, I was thinking of a more sleek silhouette to balance it so that things don’t become too fussy. Is it a bit toooo lacey? I’m also not sure it works for an October wedding?!

Dress 2; …that brings me to the second dress which is definitely more sleek! Again, this dress doesn’t need much alteration. She just pinned the dress behind me for the photograph, so it is not exactly how it will be, I’d want it a littleeee looser on the stomach! I definitely felt very elegant in it though. She paired it with some beaded and embellished veils which really did add more interest to the look and in general it’s more what I had in mind. Overall, I really liked it, but is it a bit too simple or plain? Does it look a bit…matronly? Or does it look elegant and chic?

Torn between 2 more dresses- this time for my ceremony

I previously posted about 3 dresses I was torn between and I was so overwhelmed with all the lovely responses- I don’t know how to update the original post but thank you to anyone who commented! It was also super helpful to hear others perspectives and in the end I feel so much calmer about my choice (dress 1!). I don’t have family or many close friends where I live at the moment so it can be hard to choose between so many beautiful dresses! And that leads me to my next conundrum…I need another dress for my ceremony, which will be a religious ceremony (Nikkah- an Islamic wedding) with very few people, just immediate family. (More) Nikkah dress options!

Torn between nikkah dresses!

Torn between these three dresses for my Nikkah. The ceremony will be very small, with just immediate family. We will then have a nice dinner afterwards, take some photographs, etc but the vibe is overall pretty low-key. We will be having a bigger reception with about 80 friends and family two days later. I have a separate dress for that. The nikkah will be in the mosque, but not in the prayer hall, just in a function room in the building, but I feel the dress still needs to be modest. I don’t usually wear hijab, but my hair will be more covered for the ceremony. The first two dresses were only tried down in the shop, so they would need some minor alterations. The third is when I saw online. I really like them all but they are all quite different so I’m not sure which to go for!

Dress 1; this dress made me feel like a fairy, it had so much lace, which was gorgeous! It was very comfortable to wear, it needs some minor alterations but nothing significant. Dress 3: this is from a brand called Murlongcress which I’ve seen online a lot, but I’ve never actually ordered from them so I don’t know what their dresses are like. Again this dress ticks a lot of boxes in terms of being modest. However, I’m worried it is more of just a dress rather than a bridal gown, and may not have the same quality to the fabric or tailoring that I might expect, which could come across in photographs. I’m also on the taller side and will be wearing heels, so I’m worried it might be a little short or not flow as much onto the floor as I’d like. The bonus is I could always return it!

Torn between 3 dresses

Torn between 3 dresses

I’m torn between these three dresses. All are only lightly pinned in store so would need to be altered, mainly brought in at the waist and up at the shoulders to overall be more snatched. My wedding is in October and with 80 guests, nothing too extravagant but overall going for an elegant vibe with a bit of fun.

Dress 1: Boat neck sleeveless A Line- this one surprised me as I hadn’t imagined sleeveless but I loved it when I put it on! My reservation is showing my arms, I don’t hate them but I don’t love them and it’s just not what I had in mind so I’m worried I may regret it. But I can see the vision with this dress especially with hair up in a bun or maybe a half up half down. I feel it also suits my venue.

Dress 2: I’d have the sleeves made full length (they have the same fabric so this would be possible) and an underskirt added for more oompf. I love the neckline of this one and like that it’s a bit more covered. In general I want something on the more modest side. Overall I just really like it and felt comfortable in it.

Dress 3: okay this one made me think wow, and is probably closest to what I had in mind before ever trying on dresses but I’m worried it’s maybe a bit too fussy? The French lace top is gorgeous and the sleeves flare over the hands slightly which I love but is it bordering on too much? Click on photo to see top of neck. I’d actually get it altered so the neckline is more like the second dress instead.

Any thoughts or direction appreciated!

Nikkah decor

I’m having my Nikkah soon but I’ve never been to one before so I’m not sure what is standard in terms of decoration and food. My Nikkah will be super small, just immediate family members present so probably fewer than 12 people total. It will be held in a function room in the mosque, not the main prayer hall. I see a lot of decor set ups with a flower partition between bridge and groom and fancy seats for the imam, and two witnesses. I’ve also seen other set ups without the partition but the bride and groom sit on opposite sides if the couch beside their witnesses. Is this just personal preference or is the partition expected? Also, is having some refreshments necessary if it will be so small? We will be going for a nice meal after to celebrate with family and then two days later will have a reception with friends and family!

Beading placement on wedding dress

I got this beautiful dress for my religious wedding ceremony but the more I think about the beading down the back the more I’m worried it might be a bit inappropriate? It goes down pretty low!

The dress is high neck and long sleeves and I’m getting lining added behind the mesh beadwork you see on the back so it won’t be see through at all. It’s also a little tight on me so will have it let out slightly but it will still be this general silhouette. But I’m wondering should I also get the beading altered so that it ends higher up, like in photos 2 or 3? Or would just putting the lining behind be enough? I’m just worried there’s literally beading on my bum!

Negotiating notice period for new job

What’s the advice for negotiating a notice period for a new job? Acceptable or not after I’ve already accepted the offer in principle? I don’t want to create any red flags or give a difficult first impression before I’ve even started the role but also need to think about my future position.

I’ve recently received a contact, the notice period is 3 months. Given the seniority of the role (I.e not senior) and fact it is already a step back in terms of salary, title and benefits for me from my last position (they are aware of this and have compromised on salary given and have come up- the job market is abysmal so I am prepared to compromise and need a job, overall I’m happy with the package) the notice period feels too long. I’d like to ask them if there is any flexibility. I understand it may be company position but figured I’d ask.

Is this acceptable during this stage? I have yet to sign the contract.

For a little context the contract feels very defensive and not the most employee friendly, which is to be expected but there are some other clauses in there that are quite restrictive and not things I’ve come across before, but materially will likely not be enforceable and have little impact on me. A notice period however does have a tangible impact. 3 months is not the end of the world but ideally I’d like 1 or maybe 2.

Suitable dress for Nikkah?

The nikkah will either be in the masjid itself or a meeting room in the mosque- this is TBD. I am having the dress altered so there will be solid lining added behind the beadwork on the back so there will be nothing see through at all. It is also a little tight right now so it will be let out and will likely be less figure hugging on me compared to the model. I will also wear a long veil with my hair back in a bun but covered by a hijab cap (I don’t normally wear a hijab).
