The body size of the Bengal Tiger

The body size of the Bengal Tiger

I’m making this to put to bed the constant, never ending skirmishes in this sub about tiger size. Are there other charts floating around? Yes. Do they have a higher average? Yes. Are they reliable? Maybe-maybe not, that’s up to you to decide.

This is not gonna be a long post because quite frankly I cannot be bothered getting into another toxic debate regarding big cat (particularly Lion and Tiger) sizes. It is common knowledge that the average Bengal Tiger weighs around 200kg, give or take. Averages are not set values, depending on new weights added, they will either go up or go down.

TLDR; Bengal Tigers do not average 20-30kg more than Lions. Data compiled by GauteGojira through written, peer reviewed scientific sources put male Bengals at 196-210kg or so, depending on the sample size.

I will also show why Gaute’s data is not simply biased to favor larger individuals below. He removes data he deems unreliable, even if it will consequently lower the average, so simply put he is not a biased individual.

January 2022

His sample size of 31 male Bengals weighed by scientists in the Indian subcontinent, confirmed and published found 214kg. See below:

However, his much larger dataset, puts male Bengals at a 201kg average from 182 individuals:

Also, notice he has 34 male Amur tigers weighing at 200kg (this likely involves weights that were not completely verified) however his most recent dataset as of December 2025, has them weighing 190kg. Again, if information on a weight is not deemed reliable, he removes it.

April 2022

Upon more finds of weights that have been confirmed and published, he calculated a 199.7kg including Sundarbans, from a sample size of 198 tigers. Without the Sundarban tigers, the average was found to be 202.1kg from 192 tigers. This is his most recent dataset on Bengal Tigers. See below:

I have already explained by Gaute’s data does not rely on personal communication, but only published and verified weights of Tigers in my post “Body size of the Amur Tiger” on r/TigersoftheWorld.

All in all, it’s generally accepted that male Bengal Tigers average around 200kg and females average around 130kg.

The body size of the Amur Tiger

BODY SIZE OF THE AMUR TIGER

There is a lot of misinformation on the internet about Amur Tigers especially, which is why I’ll be addressing them in this post. Many people who are misinformed often quote weights of 300-400kg. It should be noted that these weights are captive, obese individuals and are not a healthy representative of wild specimens. There is no environment on the planet today to sustain a 300-400kg cat, ESPECIALLY amur tigers. Sadly, their prey base has been pretty much wiped out. Moose populations in the far east has plummeted, and only the smallest type of moose “Manchurian Moose” coexist with Amur tigers today in very small numbers, granted they’re still 280-350kg. Furthermore, Ussuri Wild Boar and Wapiti populations, their main prey items have also been declining. All in all, Amur Tigers get nowhere near 300-400kg.

ADDRESSING THE 176KG AVERAGE

On the other hand, I’ve seen certain people spamming the 176kg (Slaght et al. 2005) dataset from the Siberian Tiger Project. This table also has a bit of errors, particularly for the males. First of all, the sample size isn’t 18 but it’s in fact less than that. That referred to the number of times tigers were weighed, this DOES NOT mean 18 individual tigers were weighed. There is a difference. For example, there are a couple males that have been captured multiple times and weighed. The male “M20/PT20” was captured 3 times and ranged from 170-205kg.

Furthermore, for all the incredible work the Siberian Tiger Project has done, they weren’t without flaws. They have used pretty inhumane methods to capture and weigh their tigers, included sub adults and unhealthy, sickly individuals in that dataset. Hence, this is NOT a good representative for HEALTHY, ADULT Amur Tigers.

THE “TRUE” AVERAGE

Again, the Siberian Tiger Project only weighed Tigers from one area; Sikhote-Alin. They did not weigh Tigers from Primorsky or Khabarovsk Krai, nor from China. Logically, how can one say this represents the weight of Amur tigers throughout all their range when the dataset happens to involve sick, unhealthy tigers as well as sub adults, all from ONE LOCATION.

That being said, here is what reliable big cat enthusiast “GauteGojira” found when using only healthy males over 3 years of age as of December 2025:

A sample size of over 20 males, all over 3 years of age he found a 190.3kg avg. Credit to Raul Valvert aka \"GauteGojira\".

190kg for males weighed from 1992-2023. Moreover, his dataset includes males from the Amur Tiger Project as well as males whose weights have been confirmed and published ALL THROUGHOUT Russia and China. His dataset also doesn’t count “personal communication”, just published weights. You can see the references right there in his chart, it cannot be manipulated or altered to twist a false narrative.

Here is the table for amur tigresses:

The male \"Dima\" being weighed by researchers of the Siberian Tiger Project. One can see the methods they used; snares, this resulted in some males injuring themselves while trying to get out. Dima weighed 193kg.

All in all, Amur Tigers definitely do not weigh 300-400kg nor do they (healthy adults) weigh as little as 176kg.
