SD High School -horrific assault

This clip was posted over on r/soccer and thought it should be here too (Mods, hope you let this video get through).

https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/s/34rTZtuJxx

It’s pretty horrific, easily the most brutality I’ve ever seen in a high school match… maybe any match, anywhere. Kicking an opponent on the ground in the head is bad enough, but them jumping on him and planting several punches… uff.

So, one question folks are asking: as a referee, can you do anything here? If you see one kid actively assaulting another, what’s the best course of action? Luckily other people stepped up and stopped him, but… ugg…

ALSO, just a rant: this is one reason why I hate the clock in HS games. In USSF when a player commits VC/RC, the guidance is to not add time if it’s the losing team committing VC. They’re degrading the game and adding time only rewards bad behavior. Let the clock run out and end the game. BUT in high school, the clock is stopped. Assuming white is losing, they’re now rewarded by their teammates horrific actions with more playing time, which is opportunity for them to come back and score (at least in theory). Aside from playing down, there’s no consequence for this, they still have 3 minutes remaining. It infuriates and frustrates me. Get with it, NFHS!

EDIT: David Gershon post this on RefsNeedLoveToo, and among the comments someone said this took place in the FIRST HALF! So not three minutes left in the game, but in the first half!

Dog proof/friendly car camping mattress

I’m struggling to find a good solution to our car camping adventures. We have a SUV. We need a mattress for the back. We also have a 70lb dog. We need a mattress that the dog won’t puncture when stepping on.

“Traditional” air mattresses -both the camping kind and the kind that replace a bed- are out, as from all experiences with them result in them getting punctured at some point.

A regular bed mattress (like in your home) don’t fit the form of the car.

A foam-only mattress, like a mattress topper, is too soft and doesn’t have enough support.

That leaves two possible solutions:

1- The big question is newer self-inflating air/foam combo mattresses built specifically for these vehicles. We don’t want to spend $400-500 on something that might get punctured (let alone the price).

2- Finally, after some deep digging I found a ‘human sized dog bed’ that fits the car and is big enough for us (72in x 41in). It’s not built to the form of the back, but it might be close enough.

What do you recommend for dog friendly mattresses?

And/or, do you have experience with any of these combo foam/air mattresses and will they survive our pup stepping on it?

Thanks!

Floating 102

I’m still a novice floater, but I’ve done the Milltown-Downtown Clark fork run too many times. Sure, it convenient, but I want something new.

What’s the next step up in the local floating scene?

Thanks!

Alternate routes from Ellensburg across the Columbia?

I had to drive from Spokane to Ellensburg for the weekend in coming over notice the huge long line to cross the Columbia advantage. Does anyone know if there is an ultimate route that is quicker and cuts by all the traffic? Is there a frontage road or something? Or is the only other way pretty long detour through Yakima and/or Wenatchee?

Lane assist: suddenly turning off and failure rates

Greetings from my fifth long distance (over 500mi) road trip in my 2024 llr that I got in May.

From a boring, hot, and long drive in eastern WA, these questions come to mind: a few times, lane assist has suddenly and quietly turned off for no reason. So far, we’ve noticed it right away, but what if we didn’t? Which leads to the next question: why does this happened, and how often does this lead to catastrophic failure (ie a crash)? 💥 s there some sort of guarantee that lane assist will never turn off during long, boring drives and careen the car into traffic?

Minding the gap (between the middle seats)

Two months after getting a 2024 Kia EV9 LLR, I’m getting ready for try some car camping. While looking at mattresses, I realize that some -but not all- will fall through the gap between the second row seats.

Does anyone have recommendations on how to bridge that gap? Is there something that will cover that space? Bonus points for something that will also cover the space made by moving the middle seats forward.

I’ve skimmed past posts regarding camping but haven’t found any solid solutions to this, and I fear setting on a mattress that isn’t firm enough and will fall through.

What have you done?

Thanks!

Missing MisCon so looking for artists here instead!

MisCon is in 10 day but so are a dozen other things and I’ll sadly be out of town. I’m bummed cause I wanted to try networking with local artists on a comic book idea I have, so now I’m turning to Reddit.

R/Missoula, any aspiring artists/comic book/graphic novels illustrators looking for commissioned work?

WA SummerCon, illustrators and networking?

WA SummerCon is coming up in 10 days and I’m debating going. Have you here been? What can you say about it? It’s in Puyallup, which is a long haul for me. My objective would be to network with artists for a graphic novel I’m working on, but I’m having doubts about this being the best way to do that, so double points if you’re an artist/illustrator and can talk to the merits of networking there, or if you have better ideas. Thanks!

Removing the console

As a new owner of a 2024 Kia EV9, I gotta say I’m pretty content with the purchase! My biggest complaint so far: the center console. It seems to be a big piece of plastic whose main purpose is to take up space. In my first few weeks of owning it, I’ve never used any of the buttons or charging pad.

So can it be temporarily removed? Since I’m planning some car camping in it, I’d really like easier access to the back. Is it possible to unplug it and take it out?

Those “anti-Reilly” fliers are actually a trap!

There’s been a lot of discussion about this over at r/MontanaPolitics so I’ll try to summarize here: general consensus is that the mailers you’re getting saying “Reilly wants to impeach Trump” are actually a ploy by Republicans. They want you to vote for her because they see her as the weaker candidate and if she wins the primary, then the Republican has a stronger chance of winning in the general.

Don’t fall for it!

Alas there isn’t general consensus on who to vote for instead. Personally I’m leaning toward Alani, but the real question is will the dem nominee drop out so Bodnar can win, as he has a real shot (no Dem has a chance of winning).

Traveling Referee

I just realized I have to do a long cross-country road trip from SE USA to the NW within the next week or so. I don’t want to “just drive” the whole time, so I thought I’d see if anyone has any soccer/refereeing opportunities along the way. It’s a long shot, but are there any tournaments or even just good/interesting games along the way? I’m even down with just observing or reffing a rec game of crank old O50 men in Omaha.

Reddit, what do you have for me?

Cross-country (US) road trip

I posted this on r/kiaev9 but though I’d post it here too.

A few weeks ago, after weeks of research, I found a deal of a 2024 KIA EV9 LLR in GA and bought it. The plan was to have it shipped to me in MT, but due to a little war in Iran making gas price to skyrocket, apparently no transporter in GA wants to ship it for the agreed price of $1500. So it looks like I’m going to fly to GA and drive the EV9 -my first EV- 2000 miles back home to MT.

I have ABRP and am double-checking what adapters the car comes with, as well as any other perks it might have.

I like last minute, spur of the moment adventures, but given this is new technology I’m not too familiar with, it has me a little nervous! Anyone have pointers for the drive? (I don’t know how many hours a day I can drive, but I plan to sleep in the car along the way)

Thanks!

Quote request: Lagrange, GA to Missoula, MT

Hello we’re looking for quotes to ship a 2024 Kia EV9 from Lagrange GA to Missoula MT, ideally before Memorial Day weekend (less than 2 wks). The dealer in GA is having trouble so I thought I’d try here. What do you say?

Week 8 buying an EV9, now with unexpected cross-country road trip!

The good news: two weeks ago, after 4 weeks of researching and looking at the options, I pulled the trigger and bought an EV9LLR. I found it on Carfax and seemed the best of many worlds: a former dealer fleet vehicle, low miles, no damage/accidents, no recalls.

The catch? It’s in GA. 2000 miles away.

Initially I told them it was too much, then they dropped the price to $35k and I couldn’t resist. All other options were either buy-backs/lemon titles or had 4-5 times the miles. “Can you ship it to MT?” I asked. “No problem”, they said, for $1500 extra.

Now personally, I’ve had horrible experience with auto transportation companies -they are notoriously shady in general, or so I’ve been told. I thought a Kia dealer in GA would have better connections. I also foolishly didn’t realize that this little war going on would cause oil prices to skyrocket, and keep skyrocketing. Y’know, the reason that finally got me to buy an EV.

At closing I asked about Shipping. “It’ll be picked up in a few days” they said. A few days passed and I followed-up. “Not here yet, should be tomorrow”. I followed up and… I should add the main guy I’m dealing with is very friendly and reasonable. We talked and he was clearly frustrated. “The first company we found ghosted us. So we found another company. They said I’m next in line. Should only be a few days.”

We’re now into week 7. I’m a patient guy. The weekend comes and goes. “Any updates?” Long story short, I made the suggestion: refund me the $1500 and I’ll fly down and drive it back.

Now initially, I was find with buying a vehicle blind, having it shipped to me in MT, and learning about it slowly at home with a few short trips here and there.

This morning the dealer called and said “we’ll refund your $1500 and you can pick it up. Diesel is going through the roof and no transportation company wants to drive this all the way to MT”.

So now I’m “stuck” with the prospect of flying down to GA and driving this all the way back, 2000 miles. My first EV.

I’m an adventurous type but this is pushing my comfort level! For a few thousand more I could’ve bought something almost as good but less than half as far away.

So, note to others looking to buy: be aware that the war with Iran and fuel spike is causing transportation companies to reconsider their business!

Any suggestions? Ideas? Words of wisdom and/or inspiration for me? Or am I a fool embarking on a fool’s endeavor?

▲ 1 r/Sauna

I’m considering getting a custom-built sauna for an outdoor pop up sauna business. I found a good builder, but his saunas have an 8ft interior; he said anything longer and the staves start to bow. I was hoping for something with ‘maximum’ interior to fit more people, and he said they could experiment and build one out of spruce. This would give me an larger interior. He said the only advantage of cedar is the smell, but spruce is standard wood for saunas in Finland.

So what do you think? Should I go standard cedar cause it smells good, or spruce because its larger and fits more people?

Thoughts?

Thanks!

In one of the several posts today about #SaveTheCaps, someone pointed out that Vancouver’s favourite son already owns one (or two?) football teams, so why not get him a third?

Seriously, as a GenXer I have no idea how this viral marketing stuff works, but if we -MLS supporters and Caps supporters (be it on the pitch, or at least to keep them in their home city) need to do one thing, it’s somehow get Ryan Reynolds involved/contacted/lobbied/asked if he and/or people he knows -and he knows a LOT of wealthy people- if they can save the Whitecaps.

Instead of commenting on this on every post about #SaveTheCaps today, I thought I’d start a new post dedicated to the subject.

Who’s on board? Who knows how to launch a viral campaign, like #HelpUsRyanReynoldsYoureOurOnlyHope or #RyanReynoldsSaveTheCaps or something else? Who can bring this to X and IG and FB and all the other social media?

What do y’all think?

(Speculation on Reynolds’ own personal wealth or whether he, personally, can actually do this are besides the point. We need to at least ask him, because if there’s anything Wrexham has taught us, if there’s a will, there’s a way. We just got to get Ryan the will, let him figure out the way).
