Semi new to pixel art could use some tips

I've been making pixel art on and off for about a year or two, it's the only thing I'm semi good at and the only hobby I haven't completely dropped after a few months, I've gotten to a point where I feel I'm pretty good but could definitely majorly improve

As an example this is a Sprite of a long neck dinosaur enemy I made up, supposed to be in the like Mario world SNES art style And I'm pretty happy with it but I wanted to animate it so he would open his mouth and maybe shoot a fireball or something, making a Sprite with his mouth open seemed very simple but for some reason was actually very difficult no matter how I drew it it just looked off, I would love and appreciate some tips on how I could solve this problem, and tips on how I can improve in general, as I said this is my only hobby that has stuck and I actually feel passionate about, thanks!
