I finally tackled my chronic lateness after years of excuses
For as long as I can remember I’ve been late for everything. Not just a few minutes but consistently 10-15 minutes behind schedule. It drove my friends crazy. My family made jokes about it. I even missed parts of movies I actually paid to see. I always had some excuse. Traffic. My alarm didn't go off. I just needed five more minutes. But deep down I knew it was a habit I needed to break.
It felt like a small thing but it was eating away at my relationships and my own self-respect. I would stress out before every appointment or social gathering. The panic of running behind became a constant companion. I’d arrive flustered and apologetic which just made me feel worse.
I tried all the usual tricks. Setting my clock forward. Leaving earlier. None of it stuck. My brain just found new ways to procrastinate getting ready. I’d find myself suddenly needing to reorganise a drawer or check one last email. The five extra minutes I gave myself would vanish.
Here’s what finally started to make a difference.
I stopped focusing on the arrival time. Instead I started focusing on the 'ready to leave' time. I figured out how long it *actually* takes me to get ready for something. Not how long I *think* it should take. Then I added a mandatory 15-minute buffer to that. This buffer was non-negotiable.
So if I needed to leave at 7 PM to be on time somewhere I would plan to be ready by 6:45 PM. During that 15 minutes I wasn’t allowed to start anything new. I couldn’t check my phone. I couldn’t wander off. I just had to be physically ready to walk out the door. My keys wallet and phone had to be by the door. Shoes on. Coat on. Everything.
This buffer time felt awkward at first. Sometimes I’d just stand there or sit down. But it took the pressure off. There was no mad rush at the last minute. The stress melted away. When the real leaving time arrived I was already prepared. Just walked out.
It sounds incredibly simple but it broke the loop. The
