CMV: It is perfectly reasonable for airlines to charge for extra seats when you don’t fit in one seat.

This applies to everyone, from body builders to obese people. I’ve been on just about every side of the spectrum so I’m not just hating something I don’t know anything about.

If you take up more room than you paid for it is totally reasonable to charge more for the extra room. I don’t think that should be controversial. It really sucks to sit next to someone like that. If I have to pay extra for my kid to have a seat, and pay even more for my kid to sit next to me, then why does someone get a free extra seat just because they’re too big? They made the choices that got them to that size, they can handle the consequences.

Identifying 98 vs 95 6bt

I have a truck with a blown gas engine. It’s a 97. I found a 6bt on marketplace but the seller is claiming it’s a 98 engine despite it coming out of a 95 ram.

In my state I can’t put an engine in a vehicle that is newer than the engine. Is there any way to identify that the engine is actually a 98? Casting numbers or something? Honestly, while I would probably pay more for a 98, if I can convince the dmv that it’s a 98 then that’s good enough for me. I just don’t want to do the swap and find out it’s a 95 and I can’t get it registered.

Require all movies producers to make an audio play corresponding to the movie for blind people.

Basically they make an audio version of the movie kinda like an audio book of the script. They will be required to use the same actors as in the movie and hire a narrator.

How did Lupin know how the veil works?

In the department of mysteries, when Sirius dies he is killed by a killing curse as far as we know. Whatever he is hit with pushes him through the veil. Up until this point nobody seems to know how the arch works. But Lupin sees what happens and stops harry from going in after Sirius. He knows both that Sirius is dead and that harry will die if he goes in too. So even if he thought Sirius was killed by the curse he still knows it’s not safe for harry to go through the veil.

But how did he know? I feel like it’s a stretch for them to discuss every room in the department of mysteries in Order of the Phoenix meetings. How else could he have known?

Is Snape responsible for the lack of students becoming aurors?

In Order of the Phoenix, during Harry’s career counseling, Professor McGonagall said she doesn’t think anyone had been accepted to be an auror in a few years. She also says Snape only accepts students with outstanding OWLs into his NEWT classes.

Is that why so few students go on to be aurors? Obviously it is an extremely challenging career and I’m sure not many make it because of that. But I have to assume Snape creates a bottleneck for students. He is very biased and definitely plays favorites. I have to assume that because he was a death eater and obsessed with the dark arts he would probably be biased against the type of students who would be interested in a career as an auror.

It might not be an intentional thing but I feel like he has had a significant impact on it.

What will/should be the most trending song when it finally happens?

When Margret thatcher died the number one song in the uk was ding dong the which is dead. When it happens I think Red Jumpsuit Apparatus’ Face Down should be number one.

What suggestions do you have?

Airlines send a notification when you land to tell you what mpg your car would need to drive between airports instead of flying.

It basically uses how much fuel the plane used, the number of passengers, and the distance a vehicle would have to drive between airports to calculate the mpg your car would need to drive that distance. It can also factor in the number of people traveling with you. If it’s an overseas flight then it uses straight line distance.

It can also calculate the difference in carbon footprint if you want to know that.

For example, if I fly in a 737 with 150 passengers from Seattle to Los Angeles it would use around 2500 gallons of fuel. That’s 16.7 gallons per passenger. In order to drive from SEA-TAC to LAX you would need to drive 1135 miles. You would need a vehicle that can get more than 68 mpg to make that drive using the same amount of fuel per person. But if you have 4 people it would be about 17mpg.

Are there a/c systems that use condensation from the heat exchanger to cool the condenser? If not, why?

Watching Technology Connections on YouTube (highly recommend) about dehumidifiers and it got me thinking, every ac I have worked on just has a drain for condensation coming off the heat exchanger. It takes a lot of energy to condense vapor to water, which lessens the efficiency of your ac because it’s taking energy out of the water, but not cooling the room or whatever. Wouldn’t it make sense to collect that water and use it to cool the condenser? It would make the system more efficient for the cost of maybe a small water pump.

For what it’s worth, I work in the automotive industry and I currently live in a dry climate but I’m planning to move to a more humid climate for work in the near future.

I ran my car for about 5 minutes as a test and collected about 200ml of water and the humidity was just 25% @ 82°. I feel like that’s a significant amount. If it was Florida or something that would be significantly more.

ETA: if you’ve never heard of latent heat please don’t respond to this post pretending to be an engineer who worked in the ac industry for decades. It’s really just sad.

For those who do know what latent heat is, the latent heat of water at room temperature is about 2450J/g, the specific heat is about 4.184J/(g°C). It takes as much energy to vaporize water as it does to heat water 585°C. (Calculations based on 20°C)

I do understand the corrosion concern which I would guess is the primary factor why it’s only seen in smaller applications like window units. So thank you for those responses.

AITAH For upstaging my BIL and his Jeep?

I (33 female) am a car nerd. I have several vehicles, including a Jeep CJ5. It is a pretty hard core rock crawler and just barely qualifies as street legal just so I can drive it to the trails near my house. It is pretty impressive in Jeep/off-road communities but it’s not exactly a comfortable daily driver. For this reason many people in my life don’t even know about it. I don’t keep it secret but my wife says I can come off as obnoxious when I talk about cars to people who don’t like cars so it doesn’t come up a lot.

My brother in law (BIL, 45m, my wife’s sister’s husband) has a Jeep Gladiator. He had a shop install a lift and tires and is extremely proud of it. He constantly brags about it, I don’t think I’ve ever had a conversation with him that it didn’t come up at some point. It can be a bit obnoxious but that helps remind me that my wife is right because I sound similar when I talk about my cars.

The jeep doesn’t really impress me. I know it’s snobbish but he didn’t do any of the work and it’s honestly really basic. I don’t insult him for it, it’s something he enjoys and we have a poor relationship anyway so I just let him have his little toy.

My wife’s family wanted to go camping last weekend since her parents recently bought a motorhome and wanted to “break it in”. I love her parents so I quickly accepted their invitation. BIL was also invited and suggested a camping spot at a popular off-road area. It was nice, and we found a comfortable spot away from too many off road vehicles so it wasn’t too noisy.

My BIL brought his Jeep towing a camper and I got to take out my Jeep on my truck and my own camper. Since I had to leave from work everyone was already there when I arrived. I can’t describe the look on my BILs face when I showed up driving a flat bed truck hauling a custom built Jeep and towing a custom built camper with a nearly full workshop built in. To say he was jealous is an understatement.

BIL was in a mood the whole weekend. He kept challenging me to weird and ridiculous things, many involving our Jeeps. It seemed clear he was having some kind of crisis of confidence with his Jeep and needed to prove his was better. He always did this challenge thing either everyone, something we all agreed was annoying but this time it was almost exclusively directed at me.

I may have thrown some fuel on the fire because I would usually just say things like “I’m not really competitive like that” or “I have nothing to prove here” when he challenged me. I have always responded to this way but I know it always bothered him.

Things really came to a head when we met some other off-roaders and agreed to go on a trail ride. There were 5 rigs in total, all except BILs were varying levels of serious off-road vehicles. We gathered up and pretty quickly agreed BIL should lead. For those who don’t know, the least capable vehicles are typically up front. You don’t want the hard core competition rock bouncer in front and just running away from everyone.

Normally it’s just a humility thing, you accept your position and try to have fun. BIL is not known for his humility. He had a fit and some of the others considered just not joining but he eventually calmed down. For what it’s worth, I voted but didn’t really participate in the discussion that led to BIL being in front.

BIL was in an even worse mood the rest of the weekend. He texted me today and said I embarrassed him and that I should have given him a heads up about my Jeep. I feel like he really embarrassed himself and if he had just a tiny bit of humility he would be fine. But now my wife is saying to apologize just to keep the peace and BIL is spreading rumors like I had some years long evil plan to humiliate him. So AITAH?

My coworker was in an accident last week and brought in the dash cam footage to show us.

Coworker was making a left turn from a stop sign, cross traffic doesn’t have a stop sign. When a narrow gap was available coworker floored it. The driver approaching from coworkers left got scared and swerved to their left, seemingly without braking. They hit coworkers rear end as they were halfway between the median lane and the far lane. It seems pretty clear from the footage that there wouldn’t have been an accident if the other driver hadn’t swerved, even if they didn’t brake.

Coworker says it’s the other driver’s fault because they shouldn’t have swerved and if they thought there would be an accident they should have braked. The officer said it was coworkers fault because they didn’t have the right of way. I feel like my coworker is right, the other driver basically swerved into oncoming traffic and is lucky they didn’t get in a head on collision.

Picture is a random intersection because I don’t want to show where I live. Blue is coworker, orange is other driver, red x is where they hit.
