What’s with the hotel rates this summer?

We usually go for a couple nights every summer and get a room on Thames or the Wharf area for a few reasonable rate. This summer and for fall I’ve looked up rates and there’s nothing less than $600/night - even for a random weeknight in Sept / Oct. What gives? Any events I haven’t heard about?

“Multiple” SIs?

My HIMS AME said my medical history may warrant “multiple special issuances.”

I thought there’s only one special issuance per airman/medical history? Never heard of multiple before in this context.

(Going for Third Class.)

Buying a North Face product puts you on a SPAM list you can't unsubscribe from unless you jump through several hoops.

Made the mistake of giving my email at the register. Got spammed immediately. Can you unsubcribe? NO. They turn your opt-in into a club "membership" which require you to read the "club" T&C's... which lead to a phone number you need to call... which is a chat bot... which tells you you can only unsubscribe via logging into your club dashboard... which in turn obligates you to signing up for the club's website.

F*CK YOU, TNF.

EDIT: NO there was no “opt in” or anything at the register/point of purchase. It was just a blank customer facing iPad that made you enter your email address with nothing else on the screen except a blank and a keyboard. So I’m giving them too much credit by saying that there was potentially an “opt in“ to begin with. Cashier made me enter the email before paying

What tires are we liking these days?

Just brought home my new (used!) 2019 Outback yesterday. Probably could use some new tires. Aside from Michelins, are there any favorites of yours?

Edit/update: I’m in NY metro area (not NYC though)- winters, poorly-maintained roads, mix of suburban and hwy driving.

Looking at used Outbacks

Shopping for an Outback today. Looking at a couple from years 2018 -2020. What should I look out for aside from CVT maintenance?

Owned a Forrester many years ago so not a stranger to Subies. Now need something quickly to tide me over for the next year or so —so seeing Outbacks with high mileage with budget under $15K.

Any advice appreciated!

A tip for choosing a HIMS AME.

I've had to go through two HIMS AMEs in the past 3 years. Here's a common denominator I've found to be a hindrance. Don't know if this is true nationwide but maybe something to consider.

The HIMS AMEs seem to have a "day job" of Addiction Treatment Specialists. Rightly so. But the ones I used (not naming names) seemed to do FAA work as their "side hustle." So they can become overloaded and you're prioritized differently in their workflow that includes their addiction patients.

If I had to choose another HIMS AME (I will quit this dream before I have to again) I would look at what their specialty is, and what percentage of caseload are regular addiction patients* and which are FAA-related.

Don't know if there are HIMS AMEs handling only FAA caseloads but that would be optimal.

*I am not an addiction-related FAA case myself.

Redditors who answer simple opinion questions with a whole list

Typical post Eg: “Name a song about a historical event.”

Everyone lists one answer…but there’s always the commentor that feels they MUST post an AI list of every single possible answer in the world. Buzzkill for everyone enjoying the thread.

Considering an Aussie pup - some questions

I’m on the verge of adopting an Aussie mix rescue - aboit 3-4 mos old. I’ve had a young dog before but have some questions before finalizing the decision:

- Is a crate a must for early stages?

- Is it okay to have them sleep in your ned with you that young?

- Do Aussies like to play fetch or do they usually have another game of choice?

- Do they tend to be highly vocal?

- What food type are yours usually favoring? (Beef, lamb, chicken etc.)

Any advice appreciated!

Rich Friend: “You shouldn’t buy that. You should buy THIS!” (Suggests thing you can never afford.)

Hate when people close to you overlook the fact that certain things cost money. Have friends and family that do this all the time. You try to go for something within your budget and live within your means and they’re looking down on you because you didn’t buy “quality“ a.k.a. much more money than you have to spend.

Some people don’t realize that shit costs money and some people don’t have as much as they do.

A horrid Alienation tactic now has national attention.

A prominent politician has now been subject to the same torturous tactics suffered by thousands of target parents.

Perhaps this will put some of the horrific acts Alienators use — false allegations— into the national spotlight. We can only hope.

Parents who treat their kids as "best friends" instead of children.

IMO kids needs guidance and parents should be an authority figure and role model. They don't need Mom acting like she's a "girlfriend" of her daughter.

Maybe an unpopular opinion but I see so many parents trying hard to act like another __ year-old or "bestie" with kids they should be teaching boundaries and respect.

There's a difference between being friendly and being "friends" with your kids. The former doesn't preclude you having open communication with them.

EDIT: To clarify, “best friends” as in *equals* with your kid.

Her looking back

Was walking the park (M40ish) and saw a very attractive woman, about 10-15 yrs younger. Said Hi and asked if she was local. She told me where she was from. Then I complimented her looks (she was taking selfies when I approached her) and asked if she was trying to produce content and she said yes. Thanked me for the compliment. Wished her good luck. We walked away from each other with a friendly goodbye.

As she walked away she kept looking back at me. Not just occasionally but every 2-3 seconds. Later on I saw her pass again on her way to her car and she also kept turning back to look at me a lot. I was on a phone call so didn't really look back.

Think maybe she liked me or was only checking to make sure I wasn't following her?

Supermarkets that eliminated handbaskets for carts only.

Yes, I’m sure marketing science has proven people buy more when they have a big empty cart. But man, sometimes you just need a little basket.

Out of 4 markets in my area, I travel farther to the one that thought of me as a customer and still provides baskets.

“What seems to be the problem?”

“Well Doctor, I have this sharp pain in my shoulder when I lift my arm…”

(INTERRUPTS YOU) “That’s common. Let me prescribe some ________. “

(WHAT YOU MEANT TO SAY…) “…and after the pain I go temporarily blind, shart wildly, and go on a stabbing spree around my neighborhood.”
