Insurance premium going up for accidents I wasn’t in?
Sorry for any grammatical errors, I’m using voice to text because I’m on mobile.
I recently got quoted by progressive for car insurance. Per month they want a little over $500 with also wanting 2500 about for six months. This was a jump from what was like 1300 before they pulled some kind of report.
Here’s the backstory to see if maybe someone here can help me understand .
The car belonged to my grandmother . My grandmother had me and my two younger siblings and an uncle listed as insured drivers on this car. The Uncle, who was on the policy essentially had gotten to two different accidents with that vehicle and my younger brother had multiple traffic violations and other street violations apparently that also caused the previous insurance to go up. Hence why they are no longer allowed to use the vehicle and the current plan is to transfer over into my name so I could start paying the insurance on it since I currently have semi-ownership over it because I use it for work and school.
The issue start here because after they did the report, the price jumped by almost $1000 and I’m confused because yes I’ve technically only have had my license for four years but I have a clean drivers record. I have no violations I went to driver school, which, when I went, I was told would result in cheaper insurance. Progressive is claiming that there’s something that popped up on the report that they can’t tell me what it is, but that something is what resulted in the large price increase.
I’m probably gonna try to find cheaper options and I already went to the site that progressive gave me to go get the information or report that they said they got and I’m just waiting to receive that but what could’ve caused us this jump inprice because if it’s the accidents, why would I be affected? Not only was I not in the car or the driver when it happened. I wasn’t even living at the house at the time.
Like this is all still new to me, but I don’t know what to do essentially . It didn’t help that my grandmother was there and was talking over me the entire time and then insurance agent also wasn’t listening to me so I honestly don’t even know what information they took down at this point, but I can’t get rid of the insurance yet because I need it for my job
Is there something I can do while I wait to get the report back that they said they were going to send because the cost they’re asking for is more than my car payment and it doesn’t make sense to pay more insurance than I do for the actual vehicle?
Like I understand the concept of like if you get into an accident, your insurance is higher if you have like a bad drivers record, your insurance is higher, but I have neither of those and I’m merely opening up my own policy after being on a previous policy surely I shouldn’t have to pay the penalty of the actions of the people who who essentially had the car before me or is it because I was on that policy I’m considered complicit with their actions and the effect they have on the insurance?
