Slightly more unusual find. Moose hoof/toe nail.
There was also a colossal metapodial bone nearby. Thus it was most likely moose and not reindeer.
Ladies, I know that you know what this is. So go and make me some..
So I decided to try print making. Oak printed with oak using oak.
Heyo, so first off the bat, I'm not too much into art and this was my first ever print project. I'm more into pigment making than anything, so if it looks technically awful, it probably is haha.
I have been meaning to try gyotaku for a while now, but I haven't really ever gotten around to getting squid ink for it, nor do I have other inks. Also I didn't have small enough fish to try it.
So time to get creative!
For what I lack in the ink department I can easily compensate it with lake pigments. I have currently probably closer to 3kg of raw lake pigments sitting on the shelf. Lake pigments are colorants made by laking organic substances and you can use pretty much anything plant or mushroom based for them. The laking process consists of extracing the dye stuff and then precipitanting it into solid form by mixing metal salts with alkaline solutions. For example the paint here was made by extracting the bark with small amount of sodium carbonate, the mixture was then filtered and more sodium carbonate was added. After everything was dissolved iron sulphate was mixed in, which caused the pigment to form. Later on the pigment slurry was washed and dried, and ground & mulled with linseed oil into paint.
So, what you are seeing here is English oak printed with oil paint made from the bark of the same tree.
Some of the bird bbs that I have spotted around recently.
1: Northern lapwing, 2: Goldeneye duck, 3: Mallard, 4: Common gull, 5 & 6: Canada goose.
of dandelion that I pulled from our yard.
The total length of the plant was around 130cm, or bit over 4ft.
Couple of bbes that I have spotted swimming around recently.
Beckford's pencilfish junior & senior. The first one is about 5mm long or so, the second one is about twice the size. 3rd one is a really unlucky pygmy cory who got eaten shortly after by mama pencilfish. 🙃
Well hello there little one. Nice to see you snailing around.
Baby white wizard snail.
Radula of Snelly, one of my Vittina semiconica:s.
Heyo. Does anyone have any good ideas on how to proceed with this?
I live in Finland and starter cultures for foods are really hard to come by. No store really sells them neither there seems to be clubs or that many other people who cultivate them themselves. So far I have only seen one or two advertisements from some real far away place that sell grindal worms and that's about it.
This whole situation leads me to think that I probably should try to harvest them from the wilderness.
I have read/heard about collecting samples and then cultivating them for some time & then isolating the stuff that I would want, and I was thinking of doing that. But are there any other methods that are worth trying?
Eurasian jackdaw. Never seen one with those brown/bronze color feathers before.
Heyo. I'm currently setting up a new 20g high aquarium. The theme of the aquarium will be SE Asian/borneo peat bog. It will be genuine blackwater with near zero hardness and pH somewhere around 4 to 5.
I have done some serious research on the species I can put there and the said betta species pair is one of few that have really caught my eye and I would like to ask a couple questions regarding them.
Seriouslyfishy states "An aquarium with base measurements of 45cm x 30cm could house a pair or small group.", which is smaller than the footprint of my tank, so I would assume they are fine space wise.
So we get to the point:
How do the said bettas interact with each other and other species?
What should the male/female ratio be and realistically how many of them can I house in the tank? Like if I get a breeding pair, can I leave any of the babies and grow them, or will it turn into carnage?
Also is there any major difference between the two species behavior wise?
Went for a walk a couple days ago, it was the warmest day of the spring and all the snakes had woken up. Almost ended up trampling the poor guy cause he was sitting right in the middle of the trail.
