How does Quake handle level optimisation?

My game's currently more of an arena shooter due to how the enemy spawning and level loading system is set up but i want to have the option to make levels and enemy encounters more like the standard, how do other games manage to keep enemies loaded without falling out the map?

Like my levels are split into chunks to improve performance. Say I spawn enemies in room 1 and go to room 2, if room 1 unloads with them three they fall out. How did they manage these huge labyrinthine levels in the 90s without this happening?

Thoughts on Prodeus?

I personally think the level design is some of the best I've played in a while, especially the Asteroid levels, banger after banger after banger. Just finished the campaign on Hard today and I gotta say it's a damn good game. Not perfect though, which sucks to say when at its best it's damn near perfect.

My main gripes are how their Nexus Point checkpoints work (respawns you without resetting combat encounter so you can just keep respawning and eventually whittle them down) and the difficulty spike between most of the enemies and Proteans.

Most enemies are managable on Hard within reason, but Proteans end up wiping half your health with next to no telegraphy and use homing projectiles that are impossible to outrun unless you pussy behind cover and pop rockets at them. Maybe its a skill issue but considering the rest of the enemies are fine I'm not sure that's the only cause idk.

Would love to hear you guys' thoughts!

What flavour do we reckon the energy drinks are?

Is it like red bull or a different flavour? Closest visually is Monster Ultra Vice Guava imo but wondering what everyone else's guesses are

What actually defines an fps as a boomer shooter?

What does a game need to have/exclude to be classed as a boomer shooter? Is it tied to the mechanics or visuals? Is there a defined line between a boomer shooter and an fps or is it more subjective?

Asking as my game's post got taken down for not being a real boomer shooter, so just want to know where I might be going wrong
