Trump's close aide, Sergio Gor, makes a first of its kind statement from USA about Kashmir's status by saying, "Kashmir is an Important part of India". Falls short of saying "integral and inalienable" part of India. Indicates USA is not fully aligned yet, but they made a start.
India's task is cut out.
To impress upon USA that Kashmir is an integral and an inalienable part of India.
If US' ambassador to Pakistan also repeats the same statement, then it would certainly raise the seriousness with which USA views Kashmir's status.
Nonetheless, Sergio Gor's statement came in at a very crucial timing, when Pakistan started violently suppressing the people's protests in PoK, contrasted with India's much more peaceful managing of the insurgent region.
Once before Pakistani ex high commissioner, Mr. Abdul Basit had said if USA attacks Pakistan's nuclear faiclities, Pakistan will attack India. This statement was made at a time when it was received as very shocking and absurd. Pakistan was close to America and America obtained Pakistan's services as a negotiator during US-Iran war. But somewhere the truth of something is hidden in what Basit had said. He was viewing that as the end-game of a strategy whereby USA will eventually start shifting towards India in its foreign policy approaches.
This also makes me wonder if India's proposal to bring FCRA 2.0 amendments precipitated such statements from USA? Does this mean FCRA 2.0 amendments are going to stay in the backburner? Would that be the price India have to pay to get this one statement from USA?
Mehbooba Mufti says USA is no one to give India any certificate. I hope we don't end up paying the cost of giving up FCRA 2.0 amendments.
