Teen buys Wilt Chamberlain’s Lakers jacket at Goodwill for $3, sells for $89.6K

19 year old Quinn Brown found it in a bargain bin at a Portland Goodwill back in January, paid $3.07, and thought it might just be a cool vintage piece to resell.

Turns out Sotheby’s confirmed it’s an actual game worn warmup Chamberlain wore during the 1972 Finals, the series where the Lakers beat the Knicks for their first title in LA. Estimate going in was $150K to $250K but it closed at $89,600 after 48 bids.

Insane profit regardless. Kid said his biggest resell before this was a $250 Sub Pop shirt.

Wembanyama’s new deal explained, and why leaving money on the table matters

He signed a 5 year, $252M extension but could have gotten around $303M if he waited and hit certain benchmarks like MVP or All NBA next season. Instead he locked in the 25% max now with zero escalators.

The real upside for the Spurs is 65 game rule related. Without escalators tied to games played, Wemby has zero incentive to rush back from injury for bonus money, which matters a ton given his size and injury history. It also helps San Antonio duck the luxury tax longer and softens the future overlap with Fox’s max deal.

Not quite Brunson level sacrifice but the same spirit. Interesting to see if this pressures other stars around the league to do the same.
