Reminding readers to review

Hi there,

4 months into published life. 86 Ratings (30 odd reviews) on Amazon. Going pretty well and happy with everything.

Have seen some larger established indie authors post stories, or single text posts along the lines of

'If you've bought and read my book I'd appreciate an honest review on Amazon / Goodreads' or something to that effect.

In your experience does that serve as a good call to action or is it frowned upon?

Cheers,

Louis

The Right Members Club, Louis Urbanowski (£0.99)

My novel The Right Members Club is currently 99p on Kindle, and the Countdown Deal ends in about 3 hours.

It’s a British political comedy about a secret club of disgraced MPs who find themselves responsible for saving the country.

https://reddit.com/link/1vkapfn/video/tc7mhj5k4hih1/player

Think The Thick of It x Peep Show, with Westminster satire, awful political judgement, damaged egos and people who really should not be in charge of anything.

Since launching in April, it’s hit #1 in Political Humour and Comedy.

If that sounds like your sort of thing, it’s 99p for the next few hours.

I put my intrusive thoughts into my novel.

I have pure obsessional OCD, and for years intrusive thoughts could completely derail me.

One of the worst happened on a flight. I suddenly became terrified that I might open the emergency door. I spent the rest of the flight watching myself, frightened of what the thought meant and convinced my life had somehow changed because I’d had it.

Years later, I gave that exact fear to the main character in my novel:

“An unmistakable belief had consumed him. He was about to stand up and rip open the door. Thirty-five thousand feet in the air… And Mark Fallow was about to end it all. For himself and for everyone else onboard.”

The book is a comedy called The Right Members Club, mostly about Britain falling apart, but I’ve realised OCD is all through it. It’s turning up in the next thing I’m writing too.

I think fiction became a way of giving these thoughts somewhere to go.

If anyone here gets intrusive thoughts that make them frightened of themselves, I get it. That plane scene came from a real moment when I genuinely thought my own life was over because of something that had happened entirely inside my head.

I’ve shared my book here before, but I’ve never really explained the OCD behind it.

I've posted about The Right Members Club here before, usually as a political comedy about disgraced MPs.

What I haven’t really talked about is why I wrote it.

I have pure obsessional OCD and intrusive thoughts have shaped a pretty huge part of my life. For years I could get a thought into my head and then spend hours trying to work out why I’d had it, what it meant about me and whether it proved something awful.

There’s a moment in the book where Mark Fallow is on a flight and has an intrusive thought that completely derails him.

That thought was mine.

When I had it, I became terrified by it. I genuinely thought I’d ruined my life just by thinking something.

I eventually put that feeling into Mark because fiction was the easiest way I knew to explain what was happening inside my head. Then, because apparently I’m incapable of doing anything simply, it became a comedy about disgraced MPs, secret societies and Britain falling apart.

I’m writing another novel now called The Milks, it's a zombie comedy, and I’ve realised OCD has found its way into that one too. At this point I think it’s basically my unwanted writing companion.

So I’m curious whether anyone else here has found themselves writing the same fear, obsession or part of themselves into completely different stories without really noticing they were doing it.

And if anyone reading this deals with intrusive thoughts and has been frightened by what goes through their head, I’m always happy to talk about my own experience. I know how convincing your own brain can be when it decides a thought must mean something.

If anyone wants to read the book, it’s The Right Members Club. But mainly I wanted to share the bit behind it that I’ve never really talked about here.

My political comedy predicted British politics 👀

I had one of those moments watching Andy Burnham as the new Prime Minister where I thought… hang on, did he read my book? 😂

In The Right Members Club my PM, Jackson Pierce, bins the suit and tie, ditches the lectern, moves Parliament, moves Number 10 and basically starts making it all up as he goes along lol.

The difference is Jackson actually manages to wipe out politics altogether. The only people left who can stop him are the Right Members Club, a secret society of disgraced MPs that’s been quietly pulling strings since Guy Fawkes.

It’s available on Amazon if that sounds like your sort of thing. It somehow ended up a bestseller in Political Humour & Comedy which has been pretty surreal, and it’s sold over a thousand copies, so thanks to everyone who’s taken a chance on an indie author.

Happy to answer any questions about the book or the writing process. Also if you’re an indie author and want to chat marketing, give me a shout.

Cheers,
Louis

John, how you doing. I just want to tell you, I really enjoyed your novel . . . way of writing a fucking awful story.

I actually found the narrator for my audiobook through this subreddit, so I thought I’d share the love.

My political comedy novel The Right Members Club, inspired by The Thick of It, is 99p on Kindle/Amazon this week.

There are plenty of little Easter eggs, nods and winks to the show that I reckon you’ll enjoy.

So if you’re not buying the Big Issue out of social embarrassment, maybe buy The Right Members Club instead.

A best selling comedy novel is 99p this week.

Hi everyone,

I hope it’s alright to post this here.

I’m the author of The Right Members Club, a bestselling British political comedy about a secret society of disgraced MPs trying to save the country.

I wrote it thinking I’d pushed Westminster further than it could ever go. Turns out I was fairly restrained lol.

Readers often tell me they came for the jokes and stayed because they ended up caring about the characters, which makes my heart swell.

It’s 99p on Kindle this week, so if you’ve been after a funny British read I’d love it if you gave it a look.

Thanks for having me, and if you do pick it up I’d love to know what you think.

Can I recommend a book clearly read by the Prime Minister of Great Britain, Andy Burnham? The Right Members Club is political strategy it seems!

I wrote it two years ago, published it three months ago and it seems Andy Burnham has used it's satirical teachings to climb all the way to the top.

Disgraced MPs saving the country from a left wing dictator. Jackson Pierce is my character, Andy Burnham is a fan it seems.

Cheers,

Louis!

If I could recommend the book that predicted Farage and his crying fit this afternoon! Satire about disgraced politicians.

The Right Members Club scarily predicted ALOT of the stuff Farage is doing and saying now. Freaked me out a little.

Available now for £7.99 for a limited time! £3.99 ebook option.

Disgraced MPs saving the country from a dictator. Yep!

A number one in comedy and political humour is 99p until end of June! Cheap laughs? It's okay, literally what it is.

I have perfected my use of Canva!

The Right Members Club is 99p until the end of June on Kindle. Political satire about disgraced politicians saving Britain from a dictator who the public LOVE!

What could go wrong? Sort of everything.

It's been a number one best seller in both political humour and comedy and is my debut novel. I'm over at u/UrbWrites on Insta and I promise, more than anything, I will make you laugh!

Made bookmarks to celebrate month 3 of being published!

Happy Sunday! Got a little over zealous as I approach a milestone with my debut novel. Made some bookmarks!

If you're looking for a pacy, satirical, philosophical look at British politics then ... I can recommend loads of other books. No just kidding, The Right Members Club is where you want to be.

Been a great journey so far. Here’s to month 3 as I work on my next novel (zombies this time)

UK based author wanting to sell books - but only have home address

Hi there, I'm a UK based indie author wanting to sell physical copies (that I have lying around) of my book. I can manage all postage and packaging same day as order comes through.

Setting up on seller centre it wants a warehouse address but all I have is my home address. I'm uncomfortable posting that. Any other suggestions or am I missing something?

Thanks in advance,

Louis

Reminding those who bought the book to leave an honest review - okay?

Hi all,

Is it acceptable / fine to make socials content that reminds anyone who kindly bought the book that leaving an honest review on Amazon is greatly appreciated?

No expectation for any star rating and not asking friends and family. Just those who I know in my following have bought it, read it but not round to it

Is that okay to do?

Cheers

Wrote, published and promoted a British political satire during a tumultuous time in British politics. The Right Members Club has had an interesting journey!

Hi there,

British politics is facing extinction. And only its worst politicians can save it. Yes, really.

That's my opening tagline on my Amazon listing. At first I thought it was just a fun punchy hook. But the further I've got into this journey the more it starts to feel that my fiction is becoming non-fiction, scarily fast.

I wrote my book because I was fed up of the inertia and incompetence in British politics. That and also I'm obsessed with The Thick of It and Yes, Minister.

We go left we go right, red, blue, back and forth and nothing ever changes. So the question became: 'what if someone's keeping it that way on purpose?'

And that's where The Right Members Club was born. Disgraced MPs inducted into a secret society who's job is just to keep things...dull.

Then a benevolent dictator rides to victory and the Club need to figure out if they're right to stop a man the people love.

I've copped a fair bit of flack from right wing trolls, but in fairness I take shots at all sides. They just have the thinnest skin I find.

It's done ever so well and I'm proud of it. Reaching number one in two categories on Amazon.

If you'd like to take a look I'd be thrilled, happy to answer any questions on the journey.

7 weeks since self publishing...some thoughts.

Hi everyone,

I self published my debut novel, The Right Members Club, on April 3rd via KDP. Wow, what a learning curve. To pivot from full time writing into heavy book promotion and marketing is akin to going from relaxing on the beach to being trapped in a dour cubicle. BUT it's been fun as I've met a bunch of great people.

The book is political satire, so a tiny niche, but it did give me good angles for marketing. For instance the local elections in the UK gave me lots of satirical angles. Right now I'm running a promo based off the amount of Reform councillors that have had to resign, so its down to 99p on Kindle.

I was blown away that I managed to get to number one in both political humour and comedy categories on Amazon. Milking that best seller tag for all its worth (not that much 😉)

Disgraced MPs saving the country. A story as much about my battle with OCD as it is about politics. You do not need to be politically engaged to enjoy it. Maybe just politically fatigued. As I take shots at everyone!

It's like The Thick of It met Peep Show and had a book baby.

I would recommend if you have budget to put it into Amazon ads above all other as well. But your mileage may vary!

Happy to answer any questions.

[Self-Promo] The Right Members Club is a British political satire from an indie author. Disgraced politicians saving Britain from a benevolent dictator. Started as fiction, but with what's going on...hmm. Kindle Unlimited until July 3rd

I gave up a career in corporate software sales to write full time. This is my debut novel. Im delighted with the reception so far and have had a blast learning the ropes of of book promotion. It achieved number one on Amazon for both political humour and comedy categories, which blew me away.

You don't have to be political to enjoy it. Its humour is a mix between The Thick of It and Peep Show.

It has a through thread of mental health journey (OCD) which is personal to me.

Hope you enjoy it if you do give it a shot!
