why do people ask questions they already know the answer to?

i’ve noticed that sometimes someone will ask me a question, very well knowing the answer, but want me to answer anyway to move the conversation along. and it confuses me like why’re you asking me.. when you already know.. and i blatantly say this but it never goes down well. but i still don’t understand! sometimes i grit my teeth and answer anyway to continue the rhythm of conversation but sometimes i find it so incredibly difficult… yes i have an example.

“im going to move my stuff into the other room”
“oh cool”
me taking my stuff about to leave, like 30 seconds later
“- where are you going?”
“what do you mean?” (me annoyed bc i just said im moving my stuff to the other room)
“where are you off to?”
“why’re you asking me that?”
“what?”

maybe that’s a bad example but

“oh i love [insert movie]”
“what movie?”
(but in this case, yes they heard me, and yes they know what movie it is, and yes i asked and they admitted they don’t know why they asked when they knew the answer)

these are both real examples.

don’t think im talking about clarifying questions! i’ve truly been told that people know the answer but ask anyway for conversation flow.. i don’t get it.

UPDATE:
the responses have truly helped. i think i was extra frustrated when i first typed this all up. i’ll have more grace for people asking follow up questions. thank you everyone :)

do i pursue my crush when im leaving in august?

this may seem stupid. but i (22F) haven’t had a regular calm crush in a while. they tend to get all consuming and stressful so when a man comes along that’s actually a casual crush i feel really good, and normal and a little excited! at work there’s a new guy at the box office that i find attractive that i’ve spoken to a maximum of.. twice.. and he sometimes catches my eye when i glance at him.
normally i pursue my crushes, or i befriend them. i take time to speak to them but we work in different departments at work so it wouldn’t actually work to talk so much AT work and i feel bittersweet. im leaving at the beginning of august, and id love to see for the plot if i really could just put myself out there and go against everything telling me to just be chill until it’s time to go. but also i don’t know if i even want to be involved in dating right now in this city. .. hes so cute tho lmao it’s my first time posting.. hi

i really want to strengthen my knees. i’m overweight and logically squatting and lunges, especially with dumbbells etc will strengthen my knees but they lowkey feel weaker.. is this just in my head or a process. like obviously exercising gets easier but the knees are a bone..? not a muscle..? so am i actually strengthening my knees or not

how can i tell if a guy likes me or is just attracted to me?

being 22 (f), i’m realising that a lot of men show their attraction often and don’t really show they like a girl unless they really like her , like pursuing properly. it depends on the guy but body language wise it gets a bit confusing bc there’s still eye contact and physical touch like what’s been the biggest difference..? anyone can answer. i’m also in my head about what i can do to seem more dateable rather than a body bc i’ve developed more over the years and im realising what i thought was guys being friendly was attraction and idk if i’ve ever actually had a man like me like that bc also sometimes guys show attraction and even when they like a girl it’s crickets.. this went from discussion to am i overthinking really quickly—

what’s the vocabulary for this?

since yesterday i’ve felt on the decline but i know it’s not burn out because that’s a different story. and i just feel extra needy in my friendships and emotionally, and masking feels extra painful and pulling myself back is just extra grating. im more sensitive and i feel like it’s linked to autism but idk what it is. it happens once in a while and i just wait it out usually. if it’s not linked or relatable that’s fine too. but is there a word / words for this?

how easy are you to read?

joining this subreddit i’m realising how easy ive been to read this whole time. and that things i thought were just my normal way of responding is actually interpretable and actually often misinterpretable..

how easy are you to read? like scale on 0-10, 0 being completely unreadable and 10 being completely readable with 99% accuracy.

i thought i was like a 5-6 but no.. im still misunderstood a lot but it’s still a solid 7-8

eye contact

i’ve been told that i really need to get better at eye contact for the career im going towards. it’s quite theatre and performance centric but it’s a business. is it actually possible to improve? for me it just feels painful and after a while i just get so tired and can’t be bothered anymore. it’s simply too intimate and i just don’t want to look into eyes anymore.

is it possible for it to feel less intrusive with time? should i stop trying?
