Double-spacing

I need to double-space a long document for proofreading.

As far as I remember, I always did this by using cmd-2, but when I do that it simply disappears the text and tells me the document is empty. After clicking out of it, horrified, and clicking back in, the text reappears.

I looked at Format > Paragraph > ummm - there's no "spacing" but "Line height" and "inter-line spacing" with, added beneath it, "before".

What?

Swytch on a Brompton

Good morning. A friend's bought an audio Brompton electrified by a Swytch kit. In general she's very happy with it, but she says it doesn't give enough power when she's going up a steep hill.

As far as I can gather, the 5 levels of pedal assist work on flat roads, but on steep hills, only full throttle with no pedalling works.

Is this normal?

Royal Mail - what the heck is wrong with it?

I'm in Ireland. Occasionally I have letters and packages coming from England, and they're as slow as a slow man in a slow race on a slow day. What the heck is wrong? I'm currently waiting myself for a certificate from the General Register Office which is taking weeks (and they don't offer to send PDFs by email - this is a marriage from the 1880s), and a local shop has been waiting for a group of deliveries from London since early June - well, that's UPS, I think…

Bike racks in Dawson Street

Serious dearth of bike racks; we could do with double the number, and the same on the opposite side; they're always jammers..

(Pity there isn't a DublinCityCouncil subreddit…)

SuperValu carbrain - bike parking moved and lessened

SuperValu Sundrive has messed up the bike parking. It has been directly in front of the shop for a few years, and has been (relatively) ample. Now they've moved it over to the side wall so you have to walk across through the car traffic; there are just three Sheffield racks, plus five (5) motorcycle parking bays.

Directly in front of the shop, where the bike parking was, they've moved up a trolley bay and put in a few handy spaces where people can climb out of their SUVs and waddle straight into the shop.

I think, but am not sure, that there were also disabled spaces directly in front of the shop before.

It's a really, really bad "improvement", apparently part of a general rejigging of SuperValu's car park. It's a very surprising move in an area which has one of the highest levels in Dublin of cycle commuting.

Bakers for the shop?

A set of these adorable bakers from Meketre's tomb would be such a cool present for someone who loves to bake - sitting on a shelf in the kitchen, watching the stretch-and-fold approvingly! One for the Met's shop to produce.

1901 and 1911 census of Ireland now offline

Apparently server trouble. Apparently.

You can check these censuses on the same site as the 1926 census, but the search is basically useless, because it doesn't allow searches by occupation, birthplace, etc. A huge loss.

Problems backing up to Glyph on new MacBook

I'm trying to back up a new MacBook on a Glyph hard drive.

Before, the Glyph just made space for itself on each backup, but now it's refusing the backup, saying it failed because the disk is full. How can I re-educate it to accept the backups?

Folding problem

I've had problems folding the bike since I got it - it folds, the seat tube is right down, then it unfolds.

So I happened to be talking to an engineer, who pointed out that the hook that's meant to hook over the frame is only half there.

How much does it cost to replace this, and is there a non-proprietary part to use if necessary?

It's an electric P-LIne with mudguards fitted.

And while I have you here, what do you think about kickstands?

Text expansion on Mac

Asking this here in the hope of getting expert answers.

I use a lot of shortcuts - wwb for would be, whs for whereas, that kind of thing.

I've been using TextExpander, which is perfect, but it's going to a subscription mode, so I've been trying the text expansion in the System Settings.

It works, but it's basic. I can't see a way to do things that are seamless in TextExpander - for example, making a shortcut to hop across the fields of a form so that it fills out John then Smith then johnsmith@js.com, or making a shortcut that will give me today's date (or tomorrow's or yesterday's). It's also very limited in the size that can be expanded-to, whereas I had whole business letters on shortcuts before.

Is there a way to do this within the system text expansion?

I'm using Tahoe on a Neo.

Neo's little eccentricities

Starting to use a Neo and it has a few little eccentricities, of which the most annoying is that when I select text it instantly un-selects it nine times out of ten. Is there a way to re-educated it on this?

Adding text replacement

I'm gradually adding in the text replacements that I formerly had in TextExpander (lovely, but now going to subscription).

The Mac version is simple, and fine for single words and short phrases - but is there any way to do what TextExpander does, for example, I had ddate triggering today's date (eg 16 June 2026), tdate would do the same for tomorrow's date and ydate for yesterday's date, iwas would give me "I was here at 15:11 on 16 June 2026, or whatever the date was; and nametab would put my first name in one field of a form and my surname in the next field.

Can any of this be done simply in the Mac's own system?

And is this the right place to ask this?

Stench from fridge

Came home from a fortnight away and there was the horrifying stench of poverty in the house.

I tracked it down to the fridge - a tall Bosch fridge - and emptied it out and washed every shelf, etc, and cleared the drain, then pulled it out to see the back.

The reservoir looked and smelt as if it was breeding aliens - some kind of loathsome algae was floating in clumps on top of the scummy water. It's not removable (dear God, why?) so I folded kitchen paper and put it in, and repeated till it was dried out, then washed what I could get at with white vinegar and sent lots more white vinegar down the drain and repeated.

But the stench won't go. It gives a subtle odeur de white trash through the whole house, even with all the windows open.

I have three questions for Bosch:

  • Why isn't the reservoir removable so it can be washed in hot water, as I've done with other fridges?
  • Why are there no wheels to make it easy to move the fridge forward to clean behind it and get at the reservoir?
  • How can I get rid of the smell, and presumably revolting infectiveness?

Looking forward to Bosch's kind help.

Rear rack bag for Brompton electric

I'd like to get a bag for the roller rack on an electric Brompton P-Line, but I'm having a couple of problems.

Brompton's own bag a) is revolting-looking, b) causes heel strike and c) is shockingly expensive.

I've found a prettier bag - blue flashing rather than the elephant's-testicle effect of the saggy Brompton version - it's called a Racktime Tallis Plus bag

https://www.tradeinn.com/bikeinn/en/tubus-racktime-talis-plus-8-7l-carrier-bag/137695840/p?utm_source=google_products&utm_medium=merchant&id_producte=11403873&country=ie&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=23070818136&gbraid=0AAAAADvzHL9n25yh6BMjOKn2NnsbAt4w8&gclid=EAIaIQobChMItJWUmeWElQMVzo5QBh2nSQOfEAQYAiABEgJAxPD_BwE

and is said to fit on the Brompton roller rack using a Klipfix like this as an adapter

Time Machine saying "Backup disk is full"

Using a new computer. Normally my backup hard drive chugs along, backed up every week, and it automatically deletes very old backups to give itself room.

But, perhaps because this is a new computer, though all the material on it is old, poured in from this very drive with the help of Apple, it's not doing this. It's just telling me that it can't complete the backup because the disk is full.

How can I re-educate it so that it returns to its old ways? Clearing and reformatting it is not an option.
