Can the Bus Pass be used on other transit systems others than in Hamilton?

In the supplementary fees, there is a HSR bus pass that we are paying for. Can anyone tell me if that bus pass can be used on other transit systems, like the GoBus or Burlington Transit to go to IKEA? Is it a Presto pass that can be used interchangeably with other public transit systems? Thx

Banning laptops in UofT law school...could this happen here?

I don't know if others have heard about this, but UofT law school is going to be banning laptops from their lecture halls this fall. They are saying this is because they are: too distracting, don't allow for deep engagement to the material and AI can be used to summarize the lecture.

I'm wondering if this might be a start to a trend of other universities doing the same, just like countries banning social media for kids, or this is going to be a failure like the Ontario government trying to ban cellphones in classrooms?

Here's part of the article I saw:

"Canada’s top-ranked law school says laptops in the lecture hall are getting in the way of producing great lawyers, and it’s doing something about it.

The University of Toronto’s Henry N.R. Jackman Faculty of Law notified students this week that many of its professors will ban laptops from their classrooms this fall.

The concern, the school’s associate dean explained in a letter to students, is not about distraction but rather that typing notes instead of handwriting them “does not allow students to think deeply about the class material or to engage.”

“We are no longer confident that we can graduate the best students in Canada in a classroom environment where technology inhibits critical engagement,” the school’s associate dean, Richard Stacey, wrote in a detailed letter Tuesday following dean Christopher Essert’s announcement.

Essert told the Star that Jackman’s core mission is to have students “learn to think like lawyers, to reason carefully and collectively about and with the law,” but that faculty had warned the increasing use of technology during lectures, including AI tools and laptops, was threatening to undermine that mission. "

Voortmans cookies questions

Hi Burlingtonians, I need your help. I know Voortmans got sold to an American company two years ago or so. Can anyone in Burlington tell me if a) are they still making cookies at the Burlington facility?, b) why aren't many grocery stores in Burlington carrying their cookies anymore?, c) where can I find their cookies anywhere in the Burlington area? d) did they ever reopen the factory outlet?

You know the old saying that you don't know what you got until it's gone. This applies to Voortmans for me. Voortmans used to have cookies everywhere in Burlington and Ontario. But now I can't find any. It seems to be on a big list of Canadian retailers, restaurants or Canadian food manufacturing places that have disappeared or taken over.

Senior eng students - What should a 1st year eng students take as an elective?

I enrolled into an elective course back in June when course selection was open. However I picked an earth/space course that can't be used by eng students as an elective. I really wanted to do the nuclear course, but that's impossible to get into. What did you take that would connect well with engineering?

School board balances budget

It's an interesting situation when the region of Halton, which is still a growing area, is seeing a decline in students in Both of the two larger regional school boards. It is sad that public money is spent by all four boards (P/C/FP/FC) for advertising to try to lure parents to put their kids into their board vs others, so they don't loose provincial funding per pupil. What is happening to education in Ontario?

Did you loose a Costco card yesterday?

A man's Costco card was forgotten at the store cashier counter yesterday around 4:45 ish. He was purchasing 5 items at the time and probably rushed out before realizing he didn't get his card back. When I handed it into customer service, they said they don't call the people with forgotten cards and they just stick it in the drawer with other forgotten cards.

Haze over city this morning

Is it just me or did anyone else feel like there was a haze in the sky this morning like we had in the past with forest fires? There was a smell in the air too. Am I just imagining things?

Most of us have opted out of elearning

>The very first graduating class subject to the Ford government’s e-learning mandate overwhelmingly rejected it, according to new data obtained by The Trillium through a freedom of information request.

The policy, introduced in 2019 as a leap into the future of digital literacy, states that beginning with the cohort entering Grade 9 in 2020, every Ontario student needs to successfully complete two online credits to earn their diploma.

But according to records tracking the 2023-24 graduates, almost 70 per cent bypassed the requirement entirely."

The Ontario government has mismanaging OSAP and gave out $$$ grants to private colleges

Want to know why the OSAP grants for those of us that are graduating this year have mostly disappeared, and why public post-secondary education has been hurt by cuts to programs. Read the article about the funnel of money to private colleges. The government gave a ton of money to students going to private colleges, which the auditor general pointed out that these are schools that aren't inspected very well. Quote "In the 2024-25 academic year, the most recent full year of available data, about 40 per cent of OSAP — over $1.3 billion — were handed out to students at private colleges."

Essential, private colleges have been sucking out public money from the system that was supposed to help us as we go through post-secondary. I'm wondering how many of Ford's buddies run private colleges?
