How we built our levels around destruction in 25 seconds

We’re making LOP: Whitefall, a destruction-based metroidvania.

The terrain and enemies are freely destructible, giving you different ways to approach each level

We hope this 25-second clip gives you a sense of what makes our game unique

We’d appreciate a wishlist for LOP: Whitefall on Steam 😄

I put 9 atmospheric scenes from our game into 17 seconds

This is LOP: Whitefall, a destruction-driven metroidvania we're currently making.

We're using lighting to create a distinct atmosphere for each environment, and we hope you like it.

We're just a two-person team, so every wishlist means a lot to us:

Two years building a game around destruction. We finally hit 10K wishlists!

Two years ago, I prototyped procedural ice shattering.

Then we turned it into a game.

We wanted enemies to break and react.

So we built a bomb that gets harder to roll as it breaks. And a drone you can shoot down.

That led to levels built around destruction and more unique enemies.

We just reached 10K wishlists. We’re grateful for the support and will make it better!

We just passed 10,000 wishlists! We’re so happy, and our bunny got a little excited too

We finally reached the 10,000 wishlist milestone!

There are only two of us working on LOP: Whitefall, a metroidvania built around destruction. It took us about four and a half months to get here. We never had one huge spike, but there were a few moments that gave us a nice boost along the way.

We’re really happy to have made it this far, and very grateful to everyone who helped us get here. Now we’re back to work and moving toward the next goal!

We just hit 8,000 wishlists! Here’s how we shared each milestone from 4K to 8K using our game’s mechanics.

We’re working on a destruction-based metroidvania LOP: Whitefall, so we thought our wishlist milestones should show what the game actually is instead of just being number posts.

The Steam page has been up for 3 months, and we just hit 8,000 wishlists. Still a long road ahead, but this has been a really motivating start for us.

We simulated satisfying ice fracture in our game. This 18s video shows what makes it different.

Procedural impact fracture.
Every impact creates fractures in real time.
No pre-made patterns.
Ice breaks like ice, not holes.

Levels can be cleared in multiple ways in our metroidvania

We’re making LOP: Whitefall, a destruction-based metroidvania.

The terrain and enemies are freely destructible, which creates a lot of space for different ways to approach a level.

One thing I’m focusing on in level design is making each level feel less like a fixed route, and more like a problem players can solve in their own way.

About 2 years ago, I started experimenting with procedural ice shattering in Unity, making ice break apart when it gets hit or collides with something. Then I began wondering: what if destruction wasn’t just a visual thing, but the core of the whole game? Could that make the game more fun in a different way?

That idea eventually became LOP: Whitefall, a destruction-based metroidvania I’m making together with my girlfriend as a 2-person indie team.
