Do you guys consider yourself more capitalist or socialist?

By my definitions, Soc Dems are more capitalist. Socialism requires workers to own the means of production which requires (usually) abolition of private property and government mandates against capital owners.

By the definitions conservatives use, or even some leftists use, it’s kinda 50-50. Conservatives call Obamacare, public transit, progressive taxes or basically anything the government does socialist.

By the first definition, you can’t really be a mix, you’re either capitalist or socialist. By the 2nd definition, every economy exists on a spectrum between capitalism and socialism.

Also what politicians would you consider Soc Dems? Are AOC, Mamdani, and Bernie Soc Dems are Dem Socs? If they’re too far left, is Pete Budigeg a Soc Dem? Where’s the line between Neolib and Soc Dem

Why do we assume Dark Matter is real

Based on my 1 minute ChatGPT read, it seems like we observed galaxies rotate too fast on the outside and concluded we’re either wrong about gravity, or something else that has mass is acting on the outside of the galaxy (dark matter).

Why do we assume it’s dark matter and not just something else we can’t understand yet? Or is dark matter the something else we can’t understand and we just gave it the name dark matter?

I’m also not extremely well read on astronomy so I may not understand a lot of these concepts well enough to even comprehend it.

Where does the “racism is prejudice + power” talking point come from?

Every definition of racism I’ve ever read says it’s just being prejudice, antagonism or discrimination based on race, which means anyone can be racist to anyone. Where are people getting that you have to be in a position of power to be racist from?

The 2016 Finals is the greatest thing I’ve seen with my own 2 eyes

This mf went down 3-1 to the greatest team in NBA history and proceeded to average 36, 12 and 10 on 59TS% and win 3 straight games to bring Cleveland its first major sports championship in like 50 years. Not to mention that the warriors were 5th that year in defensive rating, and had the best defender of the 2010s (probably). It’s just unreal to sit and think about sometimes.

Why Socialism has a high approval rating among democrats

Socialism is viewed more favorably than capitalism among democrats now and the reason seems pretty obvious to me.

  1. Conservatives call anything Socialism that involves the government paying for something. They called Obamacare socialism.

  2. Actual socialists call countries that redistribute a lot socialist. Norway, Sweden and Denmark have been used endlessly to justify socialism from people who are actual “workers own the means of production” socialists.

To me socialism has always meant “workers owning the means of production”, which usually involves no private property, no landlords, and things like that. Social democracy doesn’t have a black and white definition to me but I would call someone a social democrat if they just wanted more taxation and redistribution from our current government.

Anyway I just think it’s funny how lefties and conservatives have both contributed to socialism being favorable by calling anything socialism.

Why do Russell and Wilt always get era taxed but Kareem doesn’t?

The 60s were definitely less skilled than today but idk why ppl think the 70s were extremely different. I think ranking relative to era is obviously what you should do, but people who don’t will start in the 70s for some reason. Kareem won at least 3 rings as the 2 option and won all his MVPs in the 70s, yet people will have him top 5 ever, while saying Wilt and Bill didn’t have good enough comp to be top 5. The comp in the 60s was definitely better than the 70s because of the ABA. If you watch a game pre 2000 it looks so much worse than today, which is fine, that’s how evolution of a sport works. But the extreme hate the 60s get is crazy when ppl will regularly have Kareem top 5 because of all the stuff he did in the 70s

Is there an any strong anti GMO argument that’s based in science?

I’ve read pretty extensively on things like seed oils, HFCS, aspartame and stuff like that, and I’ve found at least some scientific evidence to say that they could be worth avoiding. I disagree with the strength of the claims people make about them but I at least understand their arguments.

However I’ve never seen any scientific backed argument against GMOs. They sound extremely scary on paper and I think that’s where they get their bad wrap from. But I’ve never seen a piece of evidence to suggest that they’re not completely safe and as good for you as their non-GMO counterparts. Even if you agree with me, if you have a strong piece of evidence you see people cite please let me know

What’s the strongest argument in favor of beef tallow over canola oil

I’ve genuinely never seen any evidence to suggest beef tallow is healthier than canola oil. Canola has one of the better omega 3-6 ratios of all oils and almost every (well ran) study I’ve read comparing saturated fats to polyunsaturated says polyunsaturated is better. The only studies I see where the outcomes are similar are when they use an oil that’s like 99% omega 6.

Brunson over AI all time. Specifically 01’ vs 26’

If we compare Brunson’s run this year to 2001 AI, AI had the DPOY and an all stars with along with the 6MOY. Brunson just had 1 all star in KAT. Both teams were top 7 in Defensive Rating (6ers 5th, Knicks 7th).

In the first round, the 76ers beat the 41-41 Pacers (no all stars, 35 year old Reggie Miller), 47 win Raptors (Vince and Davis were all stars), and the 52 win bucks (Allen and Robinson were all stars). And we all know they lost to the Kobe Shaq Lakers in 5.

The Knicks beat a 46 win hawks team (1 all star), 45 win 76ers (1 all star), and a 52 win Cavs team (1 all star). However the Knicks beat the 62 win spurs, more wins than the 01 Lakers btw, and they beat them in 5.

In the playoffs, Iverson had 33 points (2nd in NBA) on 43% eFG (4% below league average) and Brunson had 28 (1st in NBA) on 52% eFG (3% below league average).

In the finals, Brunson had 33PPG on 47 eFG, while Iverson had 36 on 44 eFG however the Lakers were 23rd in defensive rating and the spurs were 3rd.

So Brunson has slightly worse scoring numbers against a way better defense and actually won the finals, while the best team AI beat was a 52 win bucks team, and Brunson beat a 62 win spurs team in 5. They both had an all star teammate and a great defense behind them. I don’t think if you put Brunson on that 76ers team they beat Kobe and Shaq, but I also don’t think Iverson would’ve beaten this spurs team, because Brunson had to be the most clutch player I’ve seen since LeBron to beat them. Whenever Wemby, Castle, and Harper win multiple championships, we’re gonna look back and say Brunson had one of the greatest playoff runs ever when he beat these guys.

When ranking players, “winning” shouldn’t just be championships

I think that winning a championship as the best player should be the most important thing when ranking players, depending on the context of that championship obviously. However, I think we underrate having winning seasons and deep playoff runs a lot. If you are consistently making the playoffs as a top 3 seed and winning 1-2 series each year, that should be a strong case for your all time ranking.

For example, James Harden has won on every team he’s been on. Consistently makes the playoffs as a top 3 seed and wins a series or 2. Tracey McGrady rarely made it out of the first round. James Harden is a much better winner than T Mac, but ppl will look at both of them as “scorers who can’t win” when harden has won way more.

Same when comparing Duncan to Kobe. Duncan won for his entire career. Kobe had a few stretches where they’d miss the playoffs and get bounced in round 1. This is a strong argument for Duncan imo. Duncan is a better winner than Kobe, even tho they have the same number of championships. It’s like when we look at who’s a “better winner” (stupid term), we disregard every season they didn’t win a championship and assume it’s all the same.

Who’s the worst player you could “hear someone out for” to be top 3 ever?

1 and 2 is clearly Lebron and MJ (as much as I love Bill Russell and Wilt), but who’s the worst player you could hear someone out for as 3 all time?

Wilt
Russell
Kareem
Duncan
Magic
Kobe
Shaq
Bird
Curry
Hakeem

Are all understandable to have at 3 for me, depending on people’s reasoning. Is there anyone else who has any case to be 3 all time or are any of those players I named not valid to you?

I’m also factoring in that different people have different criteria for GOAT rankings

Edit: after you name a player you should say where they rank all time on your personal list. Ranges are fine

Drafting a team hypothetical

You draft an NFL team, but every round you don’t pick a position the top 3 can’t be picked anymore. So say you pick QB first, now you can’t pick Chase, Puca or JJ at WR. If you choose a WR second, now your RB can’t be 1-6 and so on.

If you’re only drafting an offense, what order do you draft each position?

I’m going:
QB
LT
RT
WR
C
LG
RG
RB
WR
TE
WR

Edit: ballpark the top 3, if 3 and 4 are about even then don’t pick either. Every pick should be like a tier lower. The exercise is meant see how much u value each position

1967 Wilt is the greatest individual season ever

In the 1967 regular season, Wilt averaged 24, 24, 8 and 10 (blocks), on 67% (+55 adjusted fg%?!?!?). He won MVP and broke the wins record (68) as well. Now this regular season has a strong argument to be the greatest ever, but his playoff run may be even more impressive.

In the first round he plays the Royals with Oscar Robertson (4th in MVP) and Jerry Lucas (All NBA 2nd). Averages 28, 27, and 11 on 62 FG%. Remember, the league average FG% is 44% this year so 62 is almost 20 above league average.

Next round he plays the Bill Russel Celtics (60 wins, 3 all stars, 2 all NBA 2nd). Averages 22, 32, 10, and 6 on 56 FG% and beats them in 5 by an averages of 13 points, while Bill Russell averages 11 points on 36%.

In the finals, he plays the Warriors who have Nate Thurmond (2nd in MVP) and Rick Barry (5th in MVP, 35PPG). He averages 18, 29, 7 and 5 on 56% and beats them in 6 by an average of 14 points.

As for the argument of the era inflating the stats, league average PPG in 1967 was 117, while it’s 116 today. Assists and FG% however, were lower in 1967 compared to today (26-22 APG, 47-44 FG%). So if we adjust Wilt’s stats in 67 to today, based on league averages, he averages 24, 17, and 9 on 73%.

The argument of “he wouldn’t be able to do that today” is a bad argument in basketball. Basketball changes more than almost any other sport. No one today plays the way they did in 1960, 1990 or even 2005. In 1960, they called charges on plays that look completely clean today. You also couldn’t dribble on the side of the ball, your hand had to stay on the very top of the ball or it was a carry. There was also no 3 point line.

Today, no one does Wilt’s post up finger roll, sky hooks, and goaltending is more strict. As a big today, you have to be able to guard 1-5 to some level, unlike in any other era pre 2016. You also can’t have a team with less than 4 shooters today, and expect to win. The off ball movement today is also wayyyyy more advanced and so are the defensive schemes. If you watch a game, even before 2010, it’s extremely different than today.

Because of this, each era values different things. In the 60s, a defensive center who could get rebounds was the most important piece of your team. If you look at MVP voting, people like Wes Unseld, Nate Thurmond, Bill Russell, and Willis Reed were getting more votes than guards averaging double their PPG. This makes sense because with no 3 point line, rim protection is almost all that matters on defense. This is why no player will be as impactful as Bill Russell defensively. Wemby is a more skilled defender than anyone ever imo, but if 1/3 of the shots attempted are 3s, you just won’t be as impactful as someone who played when most shots were close to the rim.

With that in mind, 67 Wilt is a top 5 most impactful defender ever, and a top 3 most impactful offensive player ever (Russell, Hakeem, Kareem, Duncan; Jordan and Lebron). To me the defensive gap between Wilt and Jordan or Lebron is huge, and the offensive gap is large enough to justify him being over those other all time great defenders. While Kareem and Hakeem are comparable scorers, the passing gap of 67 Wilt gives him the edge. Along with his playoff run going up against everyone who got MVP votes, and the greatest dynasty in NBA history, this singular year is the greatest year in NBA history.

91-93 Michael Jordan is the highest peak in NBA history

Jordan during the first 3 peat was the greatest player in NBA history (peak wise)

In 91 he averaged 11.4 assists in the finals, 2nd most ever. In the 93 finals, he averaged 41, 9 and 6 on 51% fg. In the playoffs from 91-93, he averaged 34, 6, 7, 2 and 1 on +7 adjusted TS% for that entire 3 year stretch. Doing all this while 3 peating is something we’ll never see again in basketball. I still have Lebron as my overall GOAT because of longevity and the carrying he did during his prime (06-20), but peak for peak, Jordan has everyone in NBA history beat. Greatest 3 year stretch is definitely Jordan and greatest individual year might be Jordan in 93.

The eye test alone is worse than stats alone

Picking between either stats or the eye test to use alone is extremely dumb and leaves out a lot of detail, but people will criticize stats (rightfully) and substitute it with an even more flawed eye test.

The most important thing here is that the game is won with a stat, which is points. “Stats aren’t everything” is wrong because the amount of points on the board is literally all that matters. So if I can measure how much someone is increasing that number, it’s more valid than just watching the game and guessing.

Now to me there are 2 versions of the eye test. The first one is the bag people who just like seeing stuff that looks hard to do. These people will overrate players who do cool moves and finishes so much, even though they would be better if they could take easier shots more often. The other version is when people have better attention to detail, and notice who opens up their teammates more or makes life harder on defense. That version of the eye test is much more valuable because it’s measuring something that impacts the scoreboard, and can’t be put into a stat.

So both stats and eye test are valuable, but if you have to only choose 1, stats are better. Without stats, you’re just guessing how many points someone has, and how efficiently they’re scoring. There’s been plenty of games I watch where I check the box score and someone had a quiet 35 that I didn’t except. That 35 still happened and contributed as much as someone getting insanely hot and being the center of attention all game, however the eye test values the person who had the more noticeable 35. The eye test also doesn’t emphasize getting to the line as much as scoring tough buckets. Getting fouled on a shot is the most efficient thing you can possibly do offensively.

It’s also impossible to argue with anyone on just the eye test because there’s no stat or evidence to prove it, unless they watch every game with you and you show them what you’re talking about.

I think if you have both, there’s an argument to be made that the eye test is more valuable, but if you can only pick 1, stats are more important.

Advanced stat slop is ruining NBA discourse

I’ve seen a ton of advanced stats being used to say X player is better than another, and the advanced stat in question is obviously flawed. The one pictured just takes PPG + APG x 2.3, and this guy is saying these players create 15 more PPG than Wemby.

Another flawed stat that ppl see as truth is DBPM. It literally just takes BPM, which is a bunch of counting stats valued at different levels and minutes played, (and maybe team success adds to it, but I’m not sure) subtracted from OBPM. It ends up making offensive rebounds, assists and turnovers matter for DBPM which makes no sense.

The only ones I really like are TS% and on-off +/- stats. Those are very easy to understand and make sense why you would use them. Most other advanced stats that people use are just big regression equations to try to put 1 number on a player’s impact.

My rule of thumb is, if you can’t explain the stat, you probably shouldn’t be using it. I just hate how everyone either picks eye test with no stats or only look at the stats with no other context
